  1. I'm trying not to get too excited about a big name coming. At times I think Kenny gets into discussions for a big name player just so he can say, "we'll I tried everything and we just didn't line up. I tried to get Dunn, I tried to get Fielder, but the sides couldn't come to an agreement". See, doesn't that sound good? Just like this past offseason when it came out that the Sox had worked out a deal for Roy Halladay but couldn't come to terms on an extension. It sounds good, but why bother working out the deal unless you are willing to pay him?
  2. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 10:12 AM) You're forgetting that the Sox faced two really crappy Seattle pitchers, Rowland-Smith might be the worst pitcher in baseball. Brett Anderson's going tonight and I'd say he's one of the best young pitchers in the game, injury or not. By throwing a AAA pitcher or Tony Pena out there, you really decrease your chances of winning the game. It's not like you need to trade Hudson right now. You can wait until tomorrow. And more likely than not, the price will actually decrease, as Rizzo's isn't in the most desirable position with Dunn. All I'm saying is the Sox are not giving this game away by not pitching Hudson. They may be decreasing their chances of winning a little, but certainly not giving it away. One thing we can agree on is that Rowland-Smith is the worst pitcher in baseball. That guy has nothing to offer.
  3. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 10:08 AM) The A's hit our bad pitchers pretty well in Oakland. Yes they did. And the Sox are hitting very well as a team right now as well...and have won 11 games in a row at home. Just because the great Daniel Hudson most likely won't pitch tonight doesn't mean the Sox are "giving" the game away.
  4. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 10:03 AM) We're basically giving the game away tonight if we don't throw Hudson. Ugh... They aren't playing the Yankees and they won't be just throwing the game away. They could easily let Pena throw four innings and then make the rest of the bullpen work through the game. Pena for four, Linebrink for one, Threets for one, and then Santos/Thorton/Jenks/Putz fill in. It's not the end of the world. Odds are Hudson would've gone five innings and gave up four runs anyway.
  5. QUOTE (TitoMB @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:35 AM) Wow, I absolutely hate this trade. Why the f*** wouldn't we just stick with Hudson? Jackson hasn't been much better this year. I'm not one that is opposed to trading prospects at all and let me say, I hate the idea of this trade as well! This guy is a .500 pitcher who walks a ton of guys. Plus, he's going to make nearly $9M next season that the Sox will be responsible for. Can't they get that same production out of Hudson for the league minimum? Plus, they are trading their biggest, most attractive trade bait in Hudson. I really, really don't get it. I think it is Kenny Williams making a deal just to make a deal.
  6. At this point I would go with D. Lee from the Cubs as my sleeper pick. He's already rejected a trade with the Angels and said he wants to stay in Chicago and will reject all trades. A move to the White Sox keeps him in the city so he can remain close to his family, yet provides him the opportunity to contend for a championship. He could rotate in and out at 1B with Konerko and DH on days when he isn't playing in the field. Sure he isn't a left handed bat, but he would be an offensive upgrade from guys like Andruw Jones and certainly Mark Kotsay. By all accounts he's a good clubhouse guy who wouldn't mess with chemistry too much. And the best part is, the White Sox would have all the leverage in such a move. I can't imagine D. Lee is a type A free agent so the Cubs won't be motivated to hold onto him for the two first round picks. Lee could be had for a couple of minor leaguers and Hudson certainly wouldn't have to be involved.
  7. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 04:00 PM) Why would the Nationals have interest in Morel? They have a top 5 3Bman in the game in Zimmerman, and it's not like Morel is some uber prospect that they could deal for a great pitching prospect. The only semi-logical answer to that would be that they think Morel can play 2B or that his bat can handle a shift to the outfield, but I think both are a bit far fetched to assume at this point. Sorry, I threw Morel in there just as an example of one of the other three that the Nats would want. Feel free to sub him out with Tyler Flowers and I'm still fine with the deal. Daniel Hudson and Tyler Flowers for Adam Dunn. Not sure what to do with the 5th starter spot at that point. I guess it would be Torres unless Kenny can really make a surprise move and grab a starter as well. That may leave the farm system completely depleted....if it isn't already.
  8. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:43 PM) I don't want Dunn for 4 years and $60 million. No way. 2 years at $24 million? Maybe. He will get that four year, $60 million deal from someone. If you are going to trade Hudson and Morel for him you have to make an effort to keep him, maybe even over pay a bit. Otherwise he's completely not worth a two month rental. Konerko is at $12M per year, Dunn could be given $15M. Jenks won't be back next year so take that $7M+ right off the books. The Sox can afford Dunn, the question is do they want to?
  9. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:21 PM) I would have a hard time parting with Hudson, solely because of Peavy's injury. Had Peavy not been hurt, sign me up. I wonder if we could do VIciedo and two of that group? I think I would do it, but even than, I have my doubts as to whether we would be a World Series contender which makes me partially think twice. I wouldn't have those doubts if Peavy didn't go down. I would do a Hudson and Morel combination to get Dunn IF the White Sox are granted a period to negotiate with Dunn to get that four year, $60M deal worked out that the Nats won't give him. He strikes out a lot but his OBP is over .380, he hits 40 HR's per season and drives in nearly 100 runs. No offense to Paulie but give him Konerko's money.
  10. QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 02:34 AM) He is quickly reaching Nick Swisher-like hate... sadly. I don't think that's possible either. From anything I've heard so far it doesn't seem that Teahen is a complete toolbag like Swisher. He's just not very good at baseball.
  11. QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 10:28 AM) IMO it was a good trade. Teahen was doing better and had the potential to make the trade much better until he got hurt. The extension was too much and too soon for not having seen Teahen improve on his time with the Royals. Seeing how much the sox have been counting on Omar's defense at 3B, I don't see Teahen getting more time than him when he returns. Teahen's not a terrible player. He'd probably be better than what the Tigers could currently put at 3B day in and day out. But the Sox have proven that they don't need Tehen to be successful. That's why it's an intriguing move because it does actually make some sense for both sides. Tigers get improvement on the field, Sox get a contract that doesn't look great off of the books.
  12. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 09:51 AM) The pricetag on Ramirez should make him cheaper, if anything. The Cubs are looking to dump salary, they're not going to ask for too much I imagine. Ramirez is a value contract for the Cubs compared to some of the other deals they've signed (see Fukudome, Soriano, Zambrano). I don't think Ramirez is at the top of the Cubs "I wish we could trade this guy" list, so they won't be giving him away. Now if you want Fukudome, Soriano, or Zambrano come and get them. You know all three will be placed on waivers come August in hopes a team is dumb enough to claim them, which no team will.
  13. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 09:46 AM) The Tigers would rather go after Aramis Ramirez or someone of that sort, not Mark Teahen. Obviously Teahen isn't the number one option out there, but he can probably be had for a couple mid level prospects. Aramis Ramirez is still owed a lot of money and has two years left on his deal. I don't think the Tigers will want to give up good prospects and be obligated to pay Ramirez what he's do the rest of this year and next. I think they said on the radio he's set to make $14M next season, where Teahen is going to make $5M.
  14. With Brandon Inge out for an extended period of time would Kenny Williams dare to think of trading Mark Teahen to the Tigers once he returns in a couple of weeks? It goes against trading to a contender in your own division, but it gets what looks like it's going to be a bad investment off of your books for another 2.5 seasons. I'm sure the Tigers would consider it if the Sox were willing to do it. It's pretty evident that Teahen is below average defensively at 3B and his future (hopefully) is not as the Sox permanent 3B for years to come....is it? If you feel as though this needs to be moved to the trade forum please go for it. Just thought it would be an interesting topic for discussion.
  15. Here's the way I'm trying to look at this: I'm assuming Jake is going to miss at least nine starts, which is about 6.5 weeks of being injured/unable to pitch. I'll also assume that the Sox would have won six of those nine starts based on how well Jake has been pitching lately. It'll come down to how many of those nine starts the Sox can win with Hudson on the mound. With the way they've been playing I think there's a chance they can still win six out of those nine starts. It'll be interesting to see the Sox record in Hudson's starts while Peavy is out. But I'm with the group that thinks this will cost the Sox less games than if Rios or Konerko were to go down for the same six or seven week period. Time will tell, but with the way this team is playing right now I think they can withstand this injury. Now if it turns out to be season ending....well that's a different story. I'll hold my breath until the MRI results come back today.
  16. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 07:56 AM) I'm not sure what the Nationals would be looking for in return, but it seems many teams covet young pitching. That said, I agree about Hudson. Are we willing to give up Flowers, though? Would they be interested in a catching prospect? I'd be willing to part with Hudson for Dunn. Adding Sale in this years draft lessens the need for Hudson. Sale seems to have a higher ceiling than Hudson. The best Hudson will ever be is a #3 ML pitcher. Not that that's a bad thing as those type of guys are going to give you 200 innings and 12-15 wins a year. Just saying they have someone else in the minor league system now that if needed could step up next season in Freddy Garcia's spot. If you told me it was Hudson and one lower level prospect to get Dunn today I'd ask where do I sign.
  17. QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 10:52 AM) Kotsay in the 3 hole. Such a pathetic lineup, but we will probably score 10 runs today :-P As we all know Ozzie just isn't a fan of sweeping teams. Kotsay hitting third? If Rios has to have his third day off in a week at least get Carlos in the three hole for the day.
  18. Beckham looks completely lost out there right now. It even seems like it's getting to the point where he's defeated. Of course I would probably feel defeated too if I kept rotating 0 hit game, 1 hit game, 0 hit game, 1 hit game. He just can't get it together. And I'm not even all that satisfied with his defense. It seems that there are a lot of plays that he just doesn't make. That ball that slips just past him into right field early in yesterday's game. At least dive and keep that in the infield. Then the blooper into right field. Sorry, but a good second baseman goes out and makes that play. And then that line shot to right field that went just over his glove. For me he isn't getting it done offensively or defensively. If you want to be that personality always doing interviews and always on the radio you better make sure you aren't hitting .201 for the season. 1 homer through 70 games? 12 RBI's through 70 games? That's awful. There has to be a better option for 2B somewhere. Send him down, let him get it together, if he starts performing bring him up in a month.
  19. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 11:52 AM) Agreed. Those are the only 4 Sox with chances, imo. I think we are looking at one member of the White Sox in the All Star game. I'd say Konerko is the most likely, followed by Rios, then Danks. I don't think Thorton will really have a shot.
  20. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 03:45 PM) They were shopping him aggressively. From what I understand 2 factors kept him here: Ozzie, and the lack of a market. Why does Ozzie continue to have a say in player personnel? That is Kenny's job, not Ozzie's. Ozzie needs to shut his mouth and manage the team that his GM gives him. I've grown tired of the Ozzie Guillen show in Chicago. If Kenny or Ozzie need to go, I'm really hoping it's going to be Ozzie thats out the door. I have my doubts that it'll go down that way though.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 11, 2010 -> 10:03 AM) Alexei moves back into the 2 hole, Jones faces an NL lineup, good OF defense, not the worst we could do. I like the look of that lineup. For whatever reason I have a weird feeling that Nix is going to come up with a big hit late to win this game. I felt that way earlier and now to see that he's actually starting today, get ready for it.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 08:19 AM) Morel was just moved to AAA, he's ahead of schedule getting to that league, he's struggled for his first 20 at bats or so, and frankly, he belongs there for at least this year. So you would rather watch Nix/Vizquel every day for the next six weeks over Morel? I'm not with you on that one. All Omar Vizquel does for every inning he plays the field or every at bat he takes is take experience away from a younger guy who could truly use the major league experience, good or bad. Omar is a complete waste of space.
  23. QUOTE (b-Rye @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 09:24 PM) I don't know where to start. This team is as bad as 2007 yet there hasn't been a significant injury. Payroll is over 100 million. We have NINE guys on active roster hitting under .250, and four swirling around .200. 1. DFA Kotsay, Randy Williams, Ramon Castro, Scott Linebrink. 2. Send Gordon Beckham, Carlos Quentin to AAA and get them some easy at bats and a hitting coach (Even though it seems there AAA hitting coach sucks too.) 3. Sign Jermaine Dye NOW, get him a few weeks in AAA and have him DH/PH/OF when needed. (If he's willing, or he can stay at home and keep laughing at former team). 4. Recall Dayan Viciedo til Dye is ready, Donny Lucy, Morel 5. Make trade with Cubs. They have FIVE outfielders who could start here and make any of ours look silly. They need pen help, so say Bobby Jenks Colvin or more likely Xavier Nady. 6. Make a trade, get some prospects. Move Buehrle and AJ P. As much as I don't want them to go, they probably won't be resigned and can get back a few decent prospects. C- Tyler Flowers, Donny Lucy 1B- Paul Konerko 2B- Jayson Nix (BECKHAM) 3B- Morel (til Teahen unfortunately comes back) SS- Ramirez RF- Pierre/Quentin CF- Rios LF- Jones/Quentin DH- Dye/Viciedo/Nady/Pierre SP - Peavy Danks Floyd Garcia Hudson CL Santos SETUP Thorton Putz Torres Pena Ryan Braun I think after all those changes the team still sucks, but might have a better shot at winning. This team would atleast be .500. And a new coaching staff wouldn't hurt either, or a hell a GM that's whats to win his way, not Ozzies way. You probably shouldn't have started at all. It's really a good thing that you are not the GM. Sign Dye? Send a relief pitcher who makes $5.5 million per season to the minors? Send down Beckham and Quentin? Trade for Colvin or Nady from the Cubs? Keep Freddy Garcia and Daniel Hudson in the same rotation? Trade for Ryan Braun, and even worse, make him a pitcher? Those are all terrible moves/ideas. FYI, Buehrle doesn't have to be re-signed because it's not the last year of his deal. Maybe trade him because he isn't any good anymore, but who would take on that contract with the way he's pitching? You completely miss moves that actually need to be made like trading Konerko, Putz, and possibly Garcia and Jones. I agree with you that Pierzynski needs to be moved and possibly even Jenks if there's a taker. I would like to see Morel up and playing 3B right now instead of a Nix/Vizquel/any other garbage they want to put out there platoon. I would even like to see Daniel Hudson moved up to the rotation, but only if that means he's replacing Freddy Garcia and not Mark Buehrle. And I can't argue with sending down Randy Williams or even just dumping Mark Kotsay. I guess I agree with your larger point that this team is a disaster and in need of some changes, but don't at all agree on how the Sox should go about making most of their changes.
  24. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 03:33 PM) I wil always watch the Sox games. Today I am out of town and have it programmed for the DVR. Go Freddie G So you will actually DVR today's game (which is at this point really meaningless) and then get home tomorrow after you already know the final score and still watch the entire game? Wow, I'm not afraid to say that you must be a bigger Sox fan then myself. My plan is to watch the first couple of innings, then take my daughter for a walk, watch some reality t.v. (that's right I said it) and just check my phone every twenty minutes or so to see what the score is. I signed up for the ESPN alerts which is actually very nice because I get a text every time there is a scoring play in the Sox games. With this season where it's at, that's good enough for me. I've already wasted too many hours at the ballpark and in front of my t.v. watching this sad excuse for a baseball team. I just feel no need to watch Juan Pierre hit the ball weakly four times, or Omar Vizquel get picked off or continue to remind us in one way or another that he's 57 years old, or Andruw Jones continue his slide with another 0'fer, or A.J. go 0-4 and see a total of 5 pitches in those at bats, or Carlos Quentin sink deeper into depression with a couple of lazy fly balls to shallow right field, or Alexei make an error on a routine play, or Nix strike out three times, or Freddy giving up six runs or so through six innings. If you can't tell I'm pretty frustrated with this team. But still, Go Sox!
