2011 ALCS: Detroit Tigers vs. Texas Rangers Thread
sunofgold replied to Milkman delivers's topic in The Diamond Club
Tiggs wasted Verlander and Porcello in a loss. This hurts them a lot. Verlander has to pitch with 3 days rest or they start Porcello after 3 days rest (threw less pitches than Verlander). Rangers pinned a loss on Zoolander. Very nice. But they just postponed game 2 to Monday. Rain in Texas is rare too. The Tiggs must be rainmakers in their spare time. No travel day. If the Tiggs can make it rain for another postponement then Verlander could pitch game 4 on 4 days rest. Side question: Why didn't M. Gonzalez get the win? He finished off the 5th. If Wilson had finished off the 5th, he would have gotten the win. Must be some obscure rule that I don't know about. Maybe the scorekeeper's discretion. But what if Ogando only pitched 1/3 of an inning in the 6th. Would he still get the win? Confusing. -
2011 NLCS: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers

Brewers are talking way too much before this series. Greinke calling out Carpenter for being "phony". lol! ST. Louis seems the more focused team right now. I still prefer the Brewers to win but I think that Cards have the edge in this series. They have been on a roll since end of season and they have more experience in this situation. -
If we promoted somebody from our minor league system to be hitting coach, do you think that Frank would be offered that open position in the minors? Would Frank even take that position or would he want to start as a hitting coach on the major league level right off the bat? It is true that the best hitter might not be the best coach. But why not give it a chance if Frank is interested. This appointment would get the approval of the majority of White Sox fans.

QUOTE (toasty @ Oct 8, 2011 -> 05:19 PM) Not necessarily. Walt Hriniak's style is unique. Most others I see work with varying styles, more based on the players Then couldn't Frank do that. Work with varying styles. Use Hriniak's style for players who want to use it. I don't know. I think that Frank would have good advice for any hitter even if they weren't using the Hriniak style. Maybe help some of our hitters draw more walks. Aren't Ventura and Thomas good friends? Be comfortable working together. And don't forget that Ventura was a good hitter. Well, if not Frank that hopefully it will be Laker. He seemed to have done a good job with Flowers, DeAza, and Viciedo. Maybe they would be more comfortable with Laker.....guess then Frank could be still be another coach. Isn't 3rd base coach still open?

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 8, 2011 -> 05:03 PM) He knew he was going to lose, but he had to do it anyway to defend himself and his teammates. I recall an interview where he said that he was running to the mound thinking, "What am I doing?" the whole time. Heat of the moment. Got pissed and while running he probably realized "What am I doing?". But at that point you have to finish it. Kinda wish that he would be remember for more than this..but he probably gets a good laugh at this. Maybe Ryan and Ventura can meet up in the playoffs in the near future...well hopefully..lol! I watched the video again and saw Guillen in there. Not doing much though.

QUOTE (JoshPR @ Oct 8, 2011 -> 04:40 PM) Frank was a great hitter but frank's hitting style ain't for everyone, remember walt wriniak was frank's mentor and walt's style ain't for everyone Sorry but I don't understand this. Isn't any hitting coach going to have his own hitting style?

QUOTE (Cali @ Oct 8, 2011 -> 02:44 PM) I think this goes 7 with the Rangers offense just being too much for Detroit even with Verlander (he wasn't even lights out against a Yankee offense, which pales in comparison to Texas' I think) Maybe Verlander has a tired arm or just is tired in general. Leyland cannot come out and publicly say this. And that is why Verlander isn't going to pitch on 3 days rest. I think that Texas can beat him...starting tonight...so i hope. lol! -

Harvey's Wallbangers! Remember them? Gorman Thomas, Ben Oglivie, Cecil Cooper. Maybe there were more, I forget. lol And which beer do you like better? Busch Stadium or Miller Park? -
How about Frank Thomas as a hitting coach. I thought that he said in an interview that he would do it. Also, that move would get a lot of support from White Sox fans. For bench coach, how about Fisk? I know that "no experience" again. But, catchers seems to make good coaches/manager. And again a fan favorite.
-
IF Ventura gets an experienced bench coach and hires Frank Thomas as hitting coach (pleaZZZE...lol)) won't he be pretty well set up. Definitely would help him with his on the job training . lol! With Baines and Cooper in place, seems like this could work. I liked Ventura as a player. Have to give him a chance and cheer him on.

Is Carlos Quentin going to be on this team in 2012?
sunofgold replied to sunofgold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I still think that TCQ hasn't peaked yet. I think that his numbers are solid already. And would like to have a middle of the order of: TCQ, PK, and The Tank. Rios could be benched. Outfield should be Tank in LF (the new Carlos Lee), DeAza in CF, and TCQ in RF. Rios as our backup OF. Lillibridge showed that he could play OF, but he also can play 1B and some infield. -

C'mon Texas. Crush these Tiggs. Yankees could get the job done. Really want to see the Tigers' closer blow a save in this series. And cmon .000 Betermit is on their team. They don't deserve to win with him on their roster. lol! -

Yes, this is the series that I wanted in the NL. Rematch of the 1982 World series even though it isnt' the World Series. lol! Have to give LaRussa props. Never let his team quit just to win the wildcard. One day he uses six or seven pitchers to get the win and then the next game he uses one (Carp). ....while maybe that was a no-brainer. I want the Brewers to win. Heck, one of these days Milwaukee might just be a suburb of Chicago. Some people live in Milwaukee now and commute to Chicagoland area for work. However, LaRussa gives the edge in the managing department. But, maybe the KOTSAY factor will weigh in and help the Brewers win. lol! Jerry Hairston Jr (son of guess who)! Those are the only White Sox ex-factors that I see on the Milwaukee roster. For STL, Edwin Jackson and Dotel....LaRussa! -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 06:52 PM) David Freese >>> Roy Oswalt Wow! Could this be Oswalt first postseason LOSS! YES, IT IS! We beat the Astros in the games that he started but we didn't pin a Loss on him. We pinned a LOSS on that ugly , freakly looking dude. Well, anyways..nice job by Jackson. Dotel too. Good reliever selection by LaRussa....now onto Game 5. -

QUOTE (Cali @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 05:12 PM) 5 pitches from Edwin Jackson, 2 runs for the Phillies haha WOW Not a good first inning for Jackson. Or first three batters. But he looks settled in now. He cannot afford to give up another run. -

QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 05:26 PM) Leyland said Verlander is not available tomorrow. Well, that is good news for the Yanks. CC will be available. Rivera well rested. -

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 02:47 PM) He's an interesting trade piece. On one hand, he's shown flashes of being an offensive monster. But, the other (bigger) hand is him being injury-prone and a sub-par defender. I personally don't expect much back. You aren't going to get that much back for Quentin. If you keep him and he plays well , then his trade value also increases. How about trading Floyd, Danks, Thornton and re-signing Buehrle and keeping Quentin? Trying my best to get creative. lol! -

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 10:06 AM) always nice to watch the Tigers lose. Now, if the Lions can just follow suit... Game 5 pitchup is same as Game 1 (well after rainout). This favors the Yankees and they are playing at home. But you never know in one game. If Granderson doesn't catch that ball in the first inning with the bases loaded, yesterday could have had a different result. All hands on board tomorrow for both teams. CC and/or Verlander could pitch a little. Freddy Garcia is available. And Mariano Rivera hasn't pitched since the first game (only 1/3 of an inning). I think that Mariano could be possibly used for more than an inning in this situation. Dude is almost 42 years old if we have his correct birthdate. lol! -

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 01:39 PM) Going to bet on the Phillies to close it out tonight and go over the total...Phi -120 and over 7.5 Edwin, I love you man...but I don't trust you so much against this lineup... Yeah, this going to be tough. But remember Edwin usual is either really good or really bad. Cards need good Edwin to show up. I am rooting for the Cards in this one. Enough ex-White Sox factors in there: Edwin Jackson, Tony LaRussa, Dotel. And Cubs' nemesis! And would like to see a STL-MIL series rematch. Just like '82. lol! Oh wait they are in the same league. nevermind! haha! -
Is Carlos Quentin going to be on this team in 2012?
sunofgold replied to sunofgold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 03:28 PM) No. Pretty much no chance at all. Let me throw this out there. What if we don't resign Buehrle and we trade Danks. Would that be enough of a salary dump to keep Quentin? I personally don't think that Quentin has reached his peak yet. -
Any way that we keep Quentin in 2012? He really didn't increase his trade value being on the DL for the end of the season. I am looking at this team and not taking salaries in consideration..this would be our best OF combination for 2012. Viciedo in LF, De Aza in CF, and Quentin in RF. Maybe not the best defensively but I believe that Carlos improved his defense in 2011 vs 2010. Offensively however this would give us a nice middle of the order with Konerko, Viciedo, and Quentin. You could bat them in any order that you like. And De Aza would be given the chance to be the new leadoff man. But then there is Rios. I know that he has a big salary. But I hope that the White Sox make him earn a starting spot. Let him know that he isn't guaranteed a starting spot and has to go out and earn it. Same for Dunn..make them earn the playing time. Lillibridge also fits in nicely in a corner OF spot or 1B and Konerko or Viciedo or Quentin can DH a bit.

Go Yankees and Freddy and Boone Logan and Andruw Jones! The Tiggs have Betemit at 3B. Please. They deserve to lose on that fact alone. lol! -
He could be our DF ...designated fielder. Just another one of Selig's changes for baseball.
-
White Sox should take Francona if he is interested. Won 2 WS and had a .574 winning percentage in a tough division. Never had a losing season with the Red Sox. Kinda interesting that he started with the Red Sox in the same year that Guillen started with the White Sox (2004). And now they are both out in the same year. And Francona won the World Series in 2004, Guillen in 2005.

Have to root for the Yankees. Especially with Freddy starting Game 3. Bunch of ex-White Sox players on the Yankees and Granderson is from Chicago. Granderson had a helluva of a season.
