Hey it could be worse. We could have Todd Jones as our closer. -

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Jun 10, 2006 -> 12:24 PM) Neal sucks bad. Not really, just made a big error right there. Unfortunately he's not as lights out as last season though. -

QUOTE(greg775 @ Jun 10, 2006 -> 12:16 PM) It looks like Joe Borchard still might make some money at this game. I see he has five homers and is hitting about .240. He's making some progress at least. He seemed like a nice guy with his comments in the papers throughout the years. I hope he makes it. He's actually showing more promise at the plate than Anderson. Could Joe field a lick? If so I'd rather have him on the team than BA. Joe was in the minors for around about 5 to 6 seasons. Brian made his way through our system in about 2 and a half seasons. Of course BA's going through a major slump right now, but he's not this bad of a hitter. -

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jun 10, 2006 -> 12:13 PM) When you say better against righties you mean he's still bad but slightly better. .620 OPs against righties, compared to .442 OPS against lefties, so it's quite a difference. -
What's his defense like in CF Mike? I suppose if KW can't trade for a CF until the deadline, we're gonna need some sort of stopgap.

Problem is, Anderson ain't good at against lefties. If you're going to start him it should be against righties, but Machowiak is getting the majority of the starts there now. -

I suppose we've seen the best and the worst of Vazquez so far tonight. -

We might only get around 5 innings from Javy tonight at this rate. He can't keep putting guys on at the rate he is, it's gonna cost him sooner or later. QUOTE(That funky motion @ Jun 10, 2006 -> 11:35 AM) I think McCarthy will get a least 2 innings of work tonight. I'd hope he's the guy Ozzie goes to next, and so it should. -

Vaz has gotta get his s*** straight right here. -
Cameron actually has a hit more value to SD than you think. Because Petco's such a spacious park, he's real important out there in CF defensively. So having him patrol CF is going to help their defense and pitching a lot. Plus wasn't there always bad blood when we traded him, and he said he never really wanted to come back here or something?

Looks like someone at the Trib has been listening to our ideas;

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 09:26 PM) how fast is Lumsden's fastball... I know ive heard a lot about him and everything but he was always hurt b4 and in spring training I dont remember it being that fast. Around about 94-95 MPH IIRC.

QUOTE(Friend of Nordhagen @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 04:56 PM) Now, see, DBAHO, that's some actual analysis, and it makes sense (although Dye's OPS was down in the years before we got him). Anyway, I've actually thought that Erstad's status might allow us to get him a little more cheaply on a rental basis. And, again, with our bullpen being first priority, that was definitely something to consider. Plus, yeah, he has intangibles that our team seems to lack this year. But it seems for naught now. I like Church in theory, but what's going on with him this year? And is he really a centerfielder? I just haven't seen him enough to say -- and I know you're a big backer -- so what's the scoop? Like I say, the Clark idea seems to make some sense. That would be a good one to pull off. Dye's OPS was down because he had to hit in Oakland for a few seasons, which is a notorious pitcher's park. He still hit around 20-25HR's a season while he was there IIRC, so he was always going to put up better numbers for us at the Cell if he was healthy. Luckily, he's done much more than that, and has proved to be one of KW's greatest moves as a GM. Church suffers from the Jim Bowden "I don't like you" disease. Now he hits in RFK which is also a notorious pitcher's park, just like Dye had to in Oakland. He's a lefty hitter though, and I've been hearing we've got too much of those around lately. Still last season he had splits of .287/.353/.466, an OPS of .820. This season he's only hitting .215 in 23 games. But he still has an OPS of .823, because he can hit the longball and has a very good K/BB ratio. But for some reason, Bowden decides that it's ok to have Royce Clayton as your #2 hitter and Damian Jackson in your lineup, but Church has to be down in the minors. So you could probably get him fairly cheap. And you'd have to make a move soon, before Bowden is replaced as the GM. Washington got Majewski and Jon Rauch from us for Everett, and those 2 are their best bullpen pitchers not named Cordero. Most importantly, Church can handle CF well enough defensively, and he won't be arbitration eligible until 2008, so it also makes sense for the long - term, if you could get him for a prospect or 2 not in our top 10.

QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 04:52 PM) 94-98 sounds a bit high, but 92-95 sounds better. I saw 90 multiple times out of him tonight, but he threw his sinker a lot. I think he's a guy who can go mid 90s but doesn't use his fastball that much. Hopefully he can induce enough ground balls with that sinker of his.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 04:49 PM) Ryan Church= this year's Chad Tracy? Yeah. At least I wasn't wrong on Chad regressing this season hey.

I'm pinning this. Probably time for some predictions as well. -
QUOTE(Big Hurtin @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 01:56 PM) Ervin Santana > McCarthy, and the Angels would be crazy to make that deal. Yeah they would. They should ship Jeff Weaver and Adam Kennedy out to Toronto and get some uber prospects back. That way, when Colon comes back Jered Weaver can stay in the rotation, and Howie Kendrick can start at 2B, because he's obviously ready at AAA. Stuff wise Santana is definitely better than B-Mac, but he hasn't really had the same kind of success at B-Mac did in the 2nd half of 2005. It's an interesting comparison especially when we've been having a lot of discussions over the past few days about drafting pitching prospects with not "electric" stuff.

QUOTE(Friend of Nordhagen @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 04:24 PM) Dye's career OPS is .814, his career average is .274 and his career obp is .337. Erstad's career OPS is .757, his career average is .287 and his career obp is .341. So Dye has a higher OPS. Erstad has a higher average and OBP. Darin Erstad's splits over the past 6 seasons. 2001 - .258/.331/.360 2002 - .283/.313/.389 2003 - .252/.309/.333 2004 - .295/.346/.400 2005 - .273/.325/.371 2006 - .238/.279/.350 None of those 6 seasons are higher than his career OPS of .757. The fact is Brady Clark, Ryan Church etc. are much better options than Erstad, who's overpaid, injury prone, and will be very lucky to get a 1/3rd of what he's making now, next season.
