  1. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 12:35 PM) 4-2 with a 2.77 ERA in his last 6 starts. Again, just a name. Which guy would you want to be your starter? He still has an ERA above 5 in his away starts (which is higher than Contreras in his home starts even after tonight), and a .297 BAA in those starts and got bombed at the Padres (which BTW if Jose did we'd probably want him to jump off a cliff or something). Let's see how he does tonight, and see how his velocity looks especially on that fastball.
  2. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 12:32 PM) The simple fact of the matter is that Schmidt >>>>> Contreras. Period. There is no argument. Schmidt has postseason experience. Successful at that. Schmidt knows how to pitch. He has confidence. Contreras is highly overrated. Arguing that Contreras is better than Schmidt is like arguing that Glendon Rusch is better than Freddy Garcia. He's not the only pitcher to have postseason experience. Hideo Nomo has postseason experience, does that make him good? He has confidence? Many other pitchers may have confidence in their abilities, doesn't mean they're automatically going to put up great performances though. And why would you include our best pitching prospect along with Contreras and Shingo just for Schmidt while we're at it?
  3. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 12:30 PM) Jason Schmidt or Jose Contreras, who do you pick? No explanations, no money issues, just who would you rather have pitching on the Sox? Based on this season's performances so far, I'd pick Contreras, based on numbers, however if Schmidt comes back into the dominating pitcher he was, of course you take Schmidt.
  4. QUOTE(jphat007 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 12:29 PM) THE MAN GETS 3.1 RUNS A GAME. Are you kidding me? Bails him out. He's had to win 2-1, 2-1, 1-0, 5-3, and 7-2 this year to get a freaking win. Unbelievable. Funny if we trade for Schmidt and he gets no run support, hate to say I told you so, but hey whatever works.
  5. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 12:26 PM) What has lead you to believe that Contreras is a good pitcher? Compare him to his performances last season. He has more favorable splits than Jason Schmidt, not saying he's a great pitcher but to say he's not a good starter when we've had to put up with the likes of Dan Wright and Jason Grilli starting for us over the past few seasons should prove something.
  6. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 12:24 PM) Lemme see, uuuum no. Contreras pitches on a good team that bails out their pitchers. Schmidt plays on a s***ty team littered with injuries and that doesn't back up their pitcher. So if Schmidt didn't pitch for the Giants he'd have more wins? Look at his away splits and his .BAA.
  7. Good to see Honel have a good outing.
  8. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 11:43 AM) Or maybe that Indians team was just in an awful hitting slump. They're getting blanked against the Royals tonight. He has given up 9 less HR in his away starts and after tonight he'll have an ERA of 1 less than his home starts.
  9. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 11:41 AM) So much for the Count's good second half. :rolly He doesn't pitch well at the Cell. If he's pitching away he's a good bet to put up a good performance as evidenced by his last start in Cleveland.
  10. QUOTE(CYGarland @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 11:37 AM) I guess what I'm trying to say is that i don't feel comfortable about our chances when he pitches, so therefore in my eyes he's our 5th starter. I'm just looking at the W's. That's the problem, you're just looking at the wins. That doesn't make a good pitcher. Jake Peavy has won 2 less games than Gil Meche but has an ERA of 1.69 less than Meche. Does that make Meche a better pitcher because he has 2 more wins?
  11. QUOTE(CYGarland @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 11:28 AM) His record indicates he is a 5th starter. He obvioulsy has #1 starter stuff, but for some reason he doesn't get the W's. Similar to Wood on the Cruds. So if a guy had an ERA say of about .5 to 1 above Contreras (say Gil Meche) but had 3 or 4 more wins, would he be more of a #3 starter than Contreras?
  12. Uribe works a walk, don't see that everyday. Sox really need to score at least 1 run in this inning.
  13. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 10:53 AM) I think we need one more lefty, but Everett has been very good this year in that spot. We really could use someone like Gload to DH or play 1b in games like tonight where we want to bench Thomas and Dye. I used to love Giles, but his bat speed has sure diminished. If Konerko leaves as a free agent a guy like J.T Snow could be a stopgap option, but he's getting up there in age. Of course someone like Eric Chavez could have solved this problem.
  14. Good to see Joe keep his good hitting from yesterday up so far.
  15. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 10:47 AM) Agreed. Our pitchers have done a pretty good job all year of limiting the big innings, and giving ourselves a chance to win. The only pessimistic thing I feel about tonight is that I don't like some of our lesser hitters (vs RHP) chances against Bonderman. Rowand, Crede, and Uribe don't strike me as players that will hit Bonderman's tough slider very well. As scary as it seems, I would have liked to see Timo get a start in the OF tonight for Rowand. Posters like YASNY have long said we need a Lefty power hitter in the lineup. A guy like Brian Giles who IIRC may be a free agent this off-season would be a good target.
  16. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 10:45 AM) The Giants would love to trade for a pitcher who might be over 40 years old. That's Sabean's dream player. , yes we can always rely on Sabean for that, but still they do have a lot of good young SP prospects who are probably major league ready like Matt Cain etc.
  17. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 10:43 AM) Yikes. That might be the ugliest all around inning we've had in a long time. One thing I'd like to see the Sox start doing is jump on teams early in the game at home. We seem to wait for the big inning at home more than we do when on the road. I can't remember the last home game where we jumped on the team early in the game, and gave our pitcher breathing room for the rest of the game. It's hard to wish for the best of both worlds, but the Sox would probably be right up there in runs scored against opposing relievers in the league this season, which should always give us hope. The Sox hitters have just got to work the counts as much as possible against Bonderman.
  18. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 10:40 AM) I'd rather have Contreras.....but trust me when I say Duque is much more liked within the organization. The only deal Contreras would probably be included at the moment is for Jason Schmidt, and that's if the Giants would even want Jose.
  19. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 01:12 AM) I took in this stray kitten, and I was going to give her away. But she's kind of growing on me (aside from the clawings during medicine time). The link didn't work for me.
  20. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 10:37 AM) From what I've been told, Contreras is the player being offered by KW in every major trade discussion we're involved in, FWIW. Well I'll put it this way. We're probably not going to make a major trade anyway, and would you rather keep El Duque or Contreras for next season?
  21. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 10:34 AM) And with that mental lapse by Contreras, that's a perfect example of why KW is trying to get rid of him. I wouldn't say KW is trying to get rid of him, especially after his last performance against the Tribe.
  22. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 03:46 AM) Plus, you know what the guy has done in the playoffs. You know how he owns the Yankees and you know he'd love a shot at his old mates. And those two teams are very likely heading to the playoffs this year. If JR means what he says then don't bother looking at the contracts, just look at what the players can mean to this club. The Dodgers will be sellers. Their owner is strapped for cash and by the beginning of next week we'll see them make a call and start dumping. I just hope KW is there first. I'd trade McCarthy in a heartbeat and toss in another good prospect. Hell, I'd throw in Anderson too. The future is NOW. I'm sorry but that's just utterly insane trading Brandon McCarthy and Brian Anderson for Derek Lowe. Have you seen his record in the regular season over rhe past 2 and a half seasons? His ERA in the last month and a half has also significantly increased as well.
  23. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 01:13 AM) Im not sure you made a good argument there of why they would be buyers. They are almost 10 games back and still falling, and basically have a glorified minor league team playing for the big club. The WC is not going to come from their division, and they will be looking towards next year. And Depodesta is supposed to be looking to unload some payroll in the terms of one of their big three starting pitchers. I would rather have Odalis instead of the other two, but I dont know if any of them are good fits here. The Dodgers are going to have some big contracts coming off the books at the end of this season, so they don't really need to dump players like Lowe for the sake of dumping them. Anyways Depodesta wouldn't trade Lowe, not 6 months after he signed him anyway, that'd be him just admitting that he was a bad signing. That division could be won by a team that just finishes over .500. It's a bit presumptious to say that the WC isn't going to come from that division anyway, anything can happen once the playoffs come around as shown by the Angels in 02 and the Marlins in 03. They're a big market team as well, so dumping players for prospects won't go over too well with the fans and the media.
  24. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 10:39 PM) what? i hope you wanted that in green. the dodgers are pitiful. 10 under .500 rihgt now and nearly 20 under since that 11-2 start. throw in all of their injuries. why would they be buyers? they were maybe a few weeks ago, but not any more. that team stinks and they know they aren't going anywhere this year They're only 8.5 games back of the Padres who haven't been that great after their good start to the season, they get a whole lot of players back in Drew, Bradley etc., they're loaded with good prospects especially in their AA team, and DePodesta's never afraid to make a move to improve the team now.
  25. Happy Birthday Cheat!!!
