Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Don't forget Brian Anderson or Ryan Sweney either.

QUOTE(rangercal @ May 9, 2005 -> 03:06 PM) lots of people on this board will deny it. I think their was something to it though. If my memory serves me correctly, wasn't Wunsch the Sox union player rep one year? -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 9, 2005 -> 03:02 PM) I never trashed Marte. I said he has been shaky so far this season and he has been. He is still great and I wouldn't give him up for anything, especially because of his ridiculously cheap contract. I think most people would just say you can't put shaky and great in the same sentence, it'd be one or the other. -

Rex and Alex can probably tell us again about Wunsch's lack of velocity last season or something like that, and that's why he was down in Charlotte. Who were some good free agent LOOGY lefties that we could have signed last season, instead of Shoe, if someone wants to post a list. -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ May 9, 2005 -> 02:55 PM) Marte's struggled a bit with his control but I mean his era is in the low 2's somewhere, the guys been getting the job done, period. And Damaso's always going to be like that. But there's no rule saying if you do walk someone a bit frequently as a reliever, you still can't be sucessful. Compared to last season, we should be happy with the way Damaso has been pitching, quite frankly. -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 9, 2005 -> 02:48 PM) How long does Pineiro get to use "arm problems" as an excuse for his stuggles? The Mariners are letting him pitch in their rotation so he is healthy, no? He made his 1st start on May 15. At least give him some time to iron out the kinks. He only gave up 6 runs in 7 innings in his last appearance, before that, 3ER in 8, 4ER in 7 1/3, 4ER in 7, 5 in 5 2/3 against us in his season debut. You would have loved to put Pinerio in our rotation before the start of the season, no? -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 9, 2005 -> 02:44 PM) 1.) I never said that Marte was a piece of s***. I said he was shaky this season. 2.) I never said that Walker was a huge pickup or an excellent investment. It was a decent risk/reward pickup, nothing spectacular. 3.) I never said that Cotts should be in Single A keeping the bullpen catcher warmed up. I just don't think he's all that great. He probably needs a season in Charlotte to work on his control. Ok so you send Cotts down. Who replaces him? Who becomes the long man? Who now issues the leadoff walk? Would you promote Walker on the basis of his performances in Charlotte so far? If Marte is shaky, what are your thoughts on Luis Vizcaino so far this season? Shingo Takatsu? -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 9, 2005 -> 02:36 PM) I never inferred that. And qwerty, would you still rather have Joel Pineiro over Freddy Garcia? :rolly Why don't you ask Seattle fans that question, you'd probably be a little suprised with what they would say. Pineiro is almost making half of what Garcia is making, but he's had arm problems this season and is still trying to get over them. 2002 - 14-7, 3.23 ERA 2003 - 16-11, 3.78 ERA Pineiro is dominant when he keeps the ball in the park, giving up HR's seems to be his major problem especially over the past 2 seasons. But everyone is happy with Freddy. -

QUOTE(qwerty @ May 9, 2005 -> 02:31 PM) Marte = piece of s***. Walker was not a waste of money and is an excellent investment. Cotts should be in single a keeping the bullpen catcher warmed up. I win. What the hell took you so long. -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ May 9, 2005 -> 02:28 PM) By the way, 4 out of neal's 7 walks this year have come when he's had 6+ days off, that's not a coincidence. And how many of those are actually leadoff walks, and who is the league leader? -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 9, 2005 -> 02:27 PM) What does Marte's numbers from last season have to do with his numbers this season? You asked me what I thought of Marte's pitching THIS season. He has been shaky THIS season. I don't even need to look at his stats to tell that. Thankfully, he hasn't given up many runs. They seem to matter for Neal Cotts and Kevin Walker. -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 9, 2005 -> 02:16 PM) He has been shaky as hell this season. I think you could admit that. Worse than last season would you say? 2-2, 2.03 ERA, 10.13K/9, .191 BAA. -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 9, 2005 -> 02:12 PM) Not giving up homers is great but issuing leadoff walks is still bad. So Damaso Marte would be bad too. He has the most BB's out of all of our relievers so far this season. -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 9, 2005 -> 02:10 PM) If Walker pitches to his past potential and Cotts pitches to his current potential, Walker is the better reliever. The stats back my statement. And what are the chances of Walker pitching to his past potential, compared to Neal's FUTURE potential. Can someone compare Cotts's "stuff" to Walker's as well, just for a comparison. -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 9, 2005 -> 02:05 PM) Cotts was awful in 2003 (albeit, in very limited IP) and bad in 2004 (in a full season of IP). Why does everyone here feel the need to defend every single one of our players. Do you guys really think that every player on our roster is good? $75 million payroll teams don't have a great player at every position. Almost every team has its mediocre players. So I guess that automatically means he's going to "suck" it up again this season. Last season Cotts and Adkins were given bullpen spots because there wasn't really any viable alternatives at the start of last year. One important start with Cotts. He gave up 13 HR's in 56 appearnaces last season. From 9 so far, he's given up 0. But I guess since he walks a guy, he's just not better than average. -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 9, 2005 -> 01:58 PM) Instead we should judge by Cotts' 9.0 IP in the season over almost 100 innings of data? Good lord... Let's see here, 66.2 of those "almost" 100 innings pitched (which is 95 BTW for all of you playing at home), was in the 00 season. That's almost 5 years ago. Since then, Walker has pitched 12 innings in 01, 8 innings in 02 (5.63 ERA), 6.2 innings in 03 (5.40 ERA), and 1.2 innings in 04 with the Giants (16.20 ERA). You don't JUST look at innings pitched as the end all with pitchers. You look at what they've done, what status (youngster, reaching arbitration process etc.) they currently are, and whether or not they are going to IMPROVE on their past numbers. -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 9, 2005 -> 01:53 PM) My point was that I made that edit before I ever saw your post. But here's the thing I love. You guys say that Cotts is better than Walker. I show you tangible stats that show Walker is better than Cotts but it's me who is wrong? Amazing. So if Cotts is pitching better than Walker right now, that automatically makes Walker better? Sometimes you just can't go on PAST performances, especially when Walker's last good season was in 01/02. -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 9, 2005 -> 12:04 PM) TRADE FOR OVERBAY! http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/gammons/story?id=2055896 Doug Melvin isn't stupid. Could Milwaulkee actually get a better deal than what Arizona had to give up for Sexson possibly, especially if Overbay keeps hitting the way he does.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 9, 2005 -> 11:10 AM) The only reason I'm mad about this is because it's a waste of money. And that's now 1.4-2.4 million that they've wasted -- IMO, of course, which is debatable. And, when you have Jeff Baj, who's done just about everything he can do down at Charlotte, waiting in the wings, it's really a questionable move. Well, Ozzie wanted a lefty -- a LOOGY? Fine, Arnie Munoz can do the job better than Walker. He's done a better job this year. I don't see the point of calling Walker up. I don't either, but maybe KW guaranteed him he would be up by June or something when he signed him. In any case, that's pretty stupid, because there's more deserving guys down in Charlotte than Walker, and they would probably be taking this pretty hard right now.
