  1. QUOTE(BFirebird @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 02:07 PM) Definitely. I have always felt k's are overrated in starting pitchers. Relievers are a different story. Is it any coincidence the pitchers leading the league in K's are some of the best?
  2. The bloop fairly delivers another special treat for Detroit. Ugh, you just have that feeling Contreras is going to be screwed. Something weird, odd, strange will happen in which the run will score.
  3. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 01:24 PM) Someone please, give me a reason that Chris Widger is on this team. Awesome sun glasses?
  4. Somewhere on a Tigers board there's a Jphat clone screaming, "Damn Bloops!"
  5. Chatroom open for coalition of the willing. How about that Widger?
  6. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 01:23 AM) I'll make one response to this recent change. The change was made because "you can write a legitimate post without using a four letter word". I realize we've always been lose on languange and while we aren't about to get all strict there are places where the line has to be drawn. More and more we are getting younger and younger members and while I realize people will see and use these sort of words in there everyday life, it doesn't necessarily need to be an everyday reality on Soxtalk. I think we are all capable of getting our point across without using *fish*, *spiff* or *beach*. However, in instances where it needs to be said, its still tolerated..sure it will be prettied up a bit with a fish, spiff or beach but the meaning will still be there. I've long said this site isn't about catering to the White Sox or the media. We have our own writers here, and our own media hookups (in terms of FutureSox) and the bottom line is that Sox fans and the membesr of this site come first. They always have and they always will. This site wouldn't be what it is today without posters like you flash and everyone else and I'll never forget that. But I truly believe this policy in addition to the removal of a few smilies which were consistently used to degrade other members (roll eye smilies, puke smilie, etc) will overall help create a healthy and inciteful of an environment for intelligent baseball discussion and debate. These rules don't bother me because I'm unable to type several explicit words over the internet. It's not as if now I'll be unable to express myself. I just believe this decision goes beyond "what's best for the site." Is their business aspects involved with this? Such as, if the site is cleaned its value increases. I could be way off -- I'm not exactly a business student -- but I know personally you couldn't care less. Just think about it for a second. A 12 year kid enters Soxtalk and notices the word "f.uck" or "s.hit," does he recoil in horror? Hell, he's probably browsing porn on the side as it is. How many people have honestly complained? 10, of the several hundred consistent posters? What about Nuke. You're killing him! "Eat Spiff" just doesn't sound the same. Or what about Spiff? How's he feel having him name used to substitute s.hit? Jason, I don't intend to fight hard about this issue. I love Soxtalk and hope it exists for a long time. However, I just wonder where this leads. Is the chatroom next? Will there be a roadhouse for attendance threads and "dark cloud" discussions? Exactly what will happen if people evade the language filters? Really, what speaks to this sites openess (in comparison to WSI) is you don't have to say spiff to me. You pay for the site. It's yours to run as you see fit. I appreciate the freedom to actually have a discussion about these rules in an open forum. Who knows if I'll have this freedom tomorrow, though.
  7. Automatically replacing "f.uck" and "s.hit" with "fish" and "spiff" is about the definition of a policy WSI would adopt. I'm not sure if it's a joke or not, but I'm surprised Soxtalk has ventured down this road. Reply with, "you can write a legitimate post without using a four letter word," or "it devalues your opinion in the mind of others," but honestly -- who cares? Are there certain people browsing this website which we have to appease? That, IMO, is the reason WSI began organizing an effort to structure a family-orientated website. And what has all that effort payed off with? Perhaps a few plugs here and there, and in the past, Dave Wills. That's it. For how their members fear posting negative comments -- not to mention their language filter replacing BMAC with "nails on a chalkboard -- I wouldn't say it is. On its own, restricting language isn't a problem. What I forsee is this branching off onto other divisions of the website which people deem inappropriate. Yes, certain members sporadically use foul language in their posts. But is is really such a concern that visitors will literally wet themselves from reading "f.uck" or "s.hit" in a post? I'd like to understand the rationale behind such a decision.
  8. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 09:16 PM) Rongey is now doing his best Ozzie apologist impersonation. A caller asks why Mackowiak was in CF because its a big field. Then Rongey starts going....right hander pitching, right hander pitching. Is this a platoon we have, I thought we had a starting CF. He's also under the impression Anderson wouldn't have caught the 6th inning blooper Mackowiak missed.
  9. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 09:14 PM) Javy has 3 decent pitches, fastball, slider and change....all he has to do is flash teh curve once in a while in the dirt to show the hitters he has it, and to give them a change of pace...if he locates it better hell be fine Vazquez can't consistently locate either his slider or change. Only observable difference with your idea would be hanging sliders hit around the ballpark in place of rolling curveballs.
  10. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 08:53 PM) What in the hell is MySpace news? Do you guys mean "bulletins" or something? I don't use MySpace much, but I can't find any "news" sections... Ha, I sure as hell don't know. Never checked. I assumed when Donkey mentioned it there was a news service available on Myspace. He may have been joking, but it wouldn't surprise me if a website such as that had a news section.
  11. Watching a replay of the bloop fall in front of Mack and him throw the ball into third, Vazquez was noticeably upset off the third base line. No one can tell me he didn't lose focus.
  12. QUOTE(DonkeyKongerko @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 08:48 PM) I think myspace news has retracted that story. Myspace news? LOL. I can only imagine the myspace world commenting on his death: OMG, HE WAS TEH AWESOME!!!! HOME OF DA GOODE BERGER WAS A GR8 PHRASE!!! L8ter playa, RIP!
  13. QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 08:45 PM) chisoxfn: dont know if its true... Kel Mitchell, otherwise known as Kel Kimble in the hit TV show 'Kenan & Kel' died on Sunday night at his home in LA. The reason for his death is currently unknown. Kel Mitchell was in other productions after 'Kenan & Kel' such as The Power of One: The Pokemon 2000 Movie Special Good Burger, which produced many famous quotes including the famously used "Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger! Can I take your order? " Kel Mitchell, leaves behind 2 children names Allure and Lyric, and his wife Tyisha Hampton. Yeah, that's very random.
  14. QUOTE(Contreras @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 08:38 PM) So...You want Vaz to pitch only 4 or 5 innings each outing? NO. Next, please. Not each outing. But in situations such as tonight McCarthy was available to pitch several innings. Obviously, if McCarthy were to appear consecutive games within a short period the option may not be available. Tonight it was.
  15. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 08:29 PM) :rolly Why shouldn't we be concerned Minnesota has crept within five games of us? Facing Liriano and Santana six times of the remaining twelve games should concern everyone, especially.
  16. QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 08:20 PM) agree with you 100% that his success or failure will go a long way in determining how the White Sox do and where they end up. But I think they are at their wits end with these horrible pitches at exactly the wrong time. It is the antithesis of what winning teams do. If you can't redouble your focus at a key time like that, there's a problem. Maybe Guillen needs a shorter leash on this guy, I don't know. Why can't people realize this? What does it say for Vazquez to only give up 2 base hits in five innings, than in ONE absolutely implode, give up several hits, and surrender a grand slam? As I indicated earlier, lineups hit him well a third time around. It may be Detroit caught up, but I'm more willing to believe Javy thought several plays behind him should have been made and lost concentration. This has happened repeatively. If I'm irritated, I can only imagine how Williams and company are feeling. Listening to Hawk/DJ brush it off as "oh well, he pitched well and had one bad inning; need to avoid it." frustrates me to no end. Certain times I just want to hear honest criticism from our broadcasters, as I did in New York. Question why Javy has a problem with the big inning? Is it bad luck, or more? If someone created a drinking game during Vazquez's starts with the words, "big inning" and "hanging slider" there would be several dead people by the 5th inning. Jesus Christ, Dye. That's f***ing embarrassing.
  17. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 08:14 PM) Not really. I mean, he pitched extremely well except for one pitch. Im dissapointed in the runs, but the sweat on his hand that caused him to hang the pitch sucks. And how often has one pitch defined his starts? He's typically removed immediately afterwards, so who knows whether Vazquez would have continued pitching well or not. All I know is Vazquez hung the breaking ball, gave up the HR, and has no one to blame but himself. Let's stop with the excuses and recognize a pattern with Vazquez.
  18. Vazquez's bad innings are so predictable it's almost freightening. Usually a missed strikeout call, shoddy defense, or a soft hits begins a parade of runs. Funny how these situations always seems to find Vazquez around the middle innings. I don't believe it's a coincidence. Since lineups usually hit him well the 3rd time around, better contact is made. Thus, more opportunities for a misplay or bloopers occurs. Let's not avert attention off of that goof on the mound. At some point, you have to look past his stuff and realize this guy has little testicular fortitude.
  19. QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 08:38 PM) :headshake Seriously great game... Garland was amazing... but this phrase needs to die a quick threat... It makes people think your like 12... What happened to you, Jeckle? You used to be cool, MAN.
  20. I notice the chat room link is no longer available at the top of the page.....
  21. QUOTE(Contreras @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 01:32 PM) You want a trade? Day one: Garcia to SD for Linebrink and a middling pitching prospect. Day two: Podsednik, middling pitching prospect, Haeger, and Fields to TB for Crawford and Navarro. Day three: DFA Widger or throw him in the deal from day two if TB wants him. No more Freddy, no more Widger, we gain a good catcher prospect, a lockdown setup man, and a helluva LF signed for about a dollar fifty over a zillion years. We give up nothing that fit into our plans, anyway. Actually, that's not bad. Except I'd forget about Navarro and the White Sox including an additional pitching prospect. If Tampa didn't want Podsednik, which they probably wouldn't, dangle Sweeney in place of him. Might as well -- he'd sure as hell be useless behind Crawford. I'll worry about Dye's replacement when he leaves, by which time they'll probably be another OF prospect. Sweeney/Haegar/Fields for Crawford should be enough. We're talking about three of our top five prospects. If Tampa doesn't accept that, f*** them.
  22. QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 01:11 PM) By the way, let me start with one area I think they can do a better job. I would like to see them more aggressively target guys in the draft who drop due to signability concerns, and then really go after them and get them signed. Damn, if my computer didn't freeze I would have been able to take credit for suggesting this first.
  23. QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 12:46 PM) What specifically would you recommend they do to improve? Quantifiable stuff, not just "get better at". I know a bit about how the White Sox approach things, so I'd like to hear your specific suggestions Flash. I'll have to make this quick: 1. Improve resources in Latin America. If people are there, as you insist, fire them and find replacements. They haven't done enough to justify the security of their jobs. 2. In early rounds, ignore "safe" picks. I don't care about a "repeatable delivery," or whether a particular player is "the best athlete available," select a player based upon potential. It's essentially why Broadway was selected over Garza and Carrillo several seasons ago. We'd rather select someone based upon their (perceived) promixity to the majors than whether or not they have legitimate talent. 3. If a particular player drops because of signability issues, don't ignore them. This childish squabble with Boras needs to end as well. If, in the future, a player such as Greg Hansen drops to our position simply pay for it. And if numbers 1 and 3 conflict because of financial concerns, I'll consider it progression. Atleast it would show we're aggressive in persuing talent.
