Keith Foulke did pretty well as a two-pitch pitcher with a big time change up

It would be interesting to see the reaction if the Sox cancelled it after announcing it was returning.

About the only memorable thing Santo did in his one year with the team. Guy said he couldn't stand playing for Chuck Tanner, who was absolutely a players manager and feuded with teammates including Dick Allen. From my interview with Carlos May: “The other time was when we got Ron Santo. He was our DH that year. (Author’s Note: 1974) We were in Chicago and it was cold and wet. Dick was hitting third, Bill (Melton) fourth and Santo fifth. Ron was back in the clubhouse, I don’t know if he was getting loose or doing something but Dick made an out and went back to the dugout.” “As Dick was sitting down, Ron came out of the tunnel and asked him what the pitcher was throwing. Dick exploded and basically said if he wanted to know what the pitcher was throwing he should have his ass on the bench watching with the rest of us. Dick was very big when it came to the team and that everyone should be doing everything they can to win games.” -

While I agree about the arrogance it comes with good reason...Boston teams win...a lot. Would be nice if Chicago teams could follow that example set over 25 years or so. -

White Sox "actively seeking" packages for Robert

Frank lasted as long as he did because JR had a different mindset back then. I get your viewpoint but the Sox are between a rock and a hard place with no way out until new ownership arrives. JR is dead-set in his ways and his thoughts on how things should be done and at age 88 he probably isn't changing his philosophy. -

Even a club as bad as the White Sox can't lose them all.

As long as you have the current owner around the answer is yes. -

White Sox "actively seeking" packages for Robert

Very true. Dombrowski was hired as an intern and Roland Hemond quickly saw his potential. He moved up in the front office. When Hawk took over, given that Dave was Roland's protegee, he fired him. I'm guessing Hawk just wanted his own people in all positions. This is from the chapter I wrote on Hawk's tenure for Dr. Fletcher's next White Sox book: "Hemond protegee Dave Dombrowski, who was an administrative assistant, was let go because of philosophical differences. (Dombrowski would go on to a stellar front office career with Montreal, Florida, Detroit, Boston and Philadelphia making the World Series five times, winning twice)." -

As I wrote I don't see how it is possible to turn things around in one season. -

I was thinking about this yesterday. In 1970 the Sox lost 106 games, the very next year they went 79-83, one of the biggest turnarounds from one season to the next in baseball history. Both Roland Hemond and Chuck Tanner told me the basic philosophy was, 'we'll trade a good player we have (Aparicio, Berry) for two players you have.' The Sox were getting back solid major league players (Andrews, Alvarado, Kelly, Reichardt, Johnstone, Egan, Bradley). Like I was told they weren't superstars but they were solid players that gave the Sox depth and experience. But times have changed, would Seattle give the Sox say three of the guys on their big league roster for Robert? Would the Padres give the Sox two of the guys on their big league roster for Crochet? I don't see how that would be possible. I just don't see how the Sox could turn things around so dramatically in a single season like you do. -

He said in the past that he doesn't believe in paying for "potential." and it shows. -
“It was harder as a White Sox player last year. It was not a fun experience to be around. It was not a great situation to be a part of.”--Liam Hendriks speaking to DVS of the Sun-Times tonight.

According to sources familiar with the vibe and conversations going on among them, players themselves were speculating about Grifol’s status even before the Orioles. They’ve also wondered about some of Grifol’s lineup choices, a lack of continuity in them and the need for so many meetings called in the first two months. And while, as one player put it, Grifol is “very respected as a good man,” that he didn’t wear a major league uniform as a player is something that will be talked about, especially after a loss to a dominant pitcher. https://chicago.suntimes.com/white-sox/2024/06/06/misgivings-or-not-in-white-sox-clubhouse-players-support-for-grifol-must-be-at-an-all-time-high

The "sense" is that this entire operation is going to suck for the next 3-5 years. Assuming JR is still around he won't pay those guys the market rate so you have no choice but to deal them. That's the reality under JR. -
