  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 05:25 PM) And the thing is, Scherzer is a terrible investment at that price too, but it is better than Samardzija. Frankly, the Sox don't need to be looking to overpay for a starting pitcher right now. 56 pitchers put up an fWAR of 2 and 61 pitchers put up a bWAR of 2 last year, meaning there are plenty of good pitchers around the league. The Sox should attempt to acquire one of those guys rather than splurging and spending all this money they've freed up on a great starting pitcher when they already have 2 of those, another top 10 pitching prospect in the game at AAA plus several others with a mixed bag of ceilings between the A+ and AAA levels. If they are going to spend a signficant amount of money on one player, it should be for an offensive player. The three names that make the most sense to me to fill a slot in the rotation are (in my preferred order) Brandon McCarthy, Jason Hammel, and Justin Masterson. There are a few others who would not be bad options, but those are the ones I think I'd prefer. Scherzer is probably out of question but i have no idea what everyones interest in McCarthy, Hammel, and Masterson is. People again think danks suck and want to get ride of his contract but if you replace him with one of these three pitchers you are basically getting the same exact thing. They all have around the same career eras. McCarthy cant stay healthy long enough. Masterson has 2 season of eras in the 3s that made at least 100 innings. They all have the same pitching time frame of 7-9 years and magically danks has more innings then any of these guys. If the sox want to compete then they better throw some money at free agency for a better pitcher or trade for one. Right now the rotation is sale, quintana, danks and probably noesi. If they do add a pitcher and rodon does go into the rotation right off the bat then getting rid of danks is fine cause noesi most likely takes his spot.
  2. Only way I'm signing martinez if it's non guaranteed 4 year deal. 2 yr with 3rd year option or 3 yr with 4th option. Plus if they are going to sign him then the sox better make sure they are competing here on out. He has the seems to get better with age like konerko did but still has to have some point where he can't do it anymore. If he's signed her for a 4 yr deal and he craps out after year one when we better be competing then you have dunn all over again. He's pretty much a pure dh only at this point. He would look good in the lineup but to many things to go wrong and be a dead contract on the team. Would rather see someone younger and a rotation dh
  3. I think the sox would have to know if they trade for him they are getting a extension done. But the million dollar question is are the going to pony up the money and years for a pitcher like Samardzija or someone else. Since the last pitcher they gave the years and money to was danks and we know how that went. They never seem to give out big contracts to pitchers and I think they are afraid to. Tanaka would have been an exception because of his age. So unless they break that trend we might be looking at one or 2 yr deals with the likes of paulino in Mccarthy or Masterson which I don't want to see.
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 10:50 AM) That's perfectly fine. There's no need for the Sox to acquire Samardzija. I'm not sure people realize he's already going to be 30 next season. So are most of the other pitchers who are free agents this year are 30 plus. Not going to get to many good pitchers now of days hitting the market in their 20s. If you want a good pitcher in their 20s then you are going to give up a ton of prospects to get him.
  5. QUOTE (shysocks @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 09:39 AM) He has yet to really show much at Charlotte. Not that he's some out of time or anything, but he hasn't done it in AAA yet. I don't think anybody is writing him off, but it would be surprising if he succeeded in the majors right out of the gate in 2015. He had more at bats and games played this year at Charlotte then in Birmingham. He was hitting over 300 but the leg injury slowed him down and his hitting dropped. you look at his play at levels he doesn't do as well when he gets moved up but he does adjust and plays better the next time.
  6. I don't know why everyone is down on johnson. I'm pretty sure he is penciled in to be the second basemen from the start of spring training unless something happens. Until he fails at second base I don't think they are moving him. I'm really intrigued to see him play. He would have been up here in September if it wasn't for the injury. He seems to hit at every level and get on base. Plus when he's on base he's a threat to steal. I'm pretty sure his bat it what's getting him up here. You can still teach him defense. I really hope he comes up plays really well to stop the doubt. If it doesn't work out then you have others that can step in. I know hahn from comments in the past has talked him up and they like what they see. I know you want defense but we had that with Gordon and he couldn't hit. So he got moved for someone that will have a chance to actually hit hopefully.
  7. Ken Rosenthal top ten trade candidates. Jeff Samardzija listed and white sox have expressed interest. Only part is do the sox have anything to get him. http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/photos/rosent...on-110614#img_9
  8. I wouldn't be giving up montas that easily. Pitching this year has been really good besides the injury that he lost sometime to. Don't know if anyone watched the Arizona fall league stars game on Saturday but he pitched 2 scoreless innings. The guys is pretty much a bartolo colon spitting image with physical appearance and the way he throws the ball. He is a really big dude. He hit 102 mph at one point. Pretty good off speed stuff. Pretty much needs to harness his fast ball command cause he did get a little wild. Plus he is rated the 3rd best prospect for the sox right now behind rodon and anderson. Even if he can't fully make it as a starter he would be a really good reliever.

  12. I know alot of people on here don't want John Danks to be on the team, but getting rid of him for the sake of not wanting him on the team I don't get. He is mostly likely a former shell of himself and doesn't put up the prettiest numbers. Higher era and has a issue of coughing up the long ball. But you are also talking about the second most durable starting pitcher on the staff for this year. He did tied Quintana with 32 starts most on the team. Also had 193.2 innings pitched this year which is only 6.2 innings short of Quintana's at 200.1. The fact that he made it through the whole year with out going down helps that fact that in the first month of the season the Sox lost Sale, Johnson, and Pualino. Danks and Quintana were the only ones left from the opening day rotation at that time. For most of the year the Sox were trying to fill at least one spot in the rotation. Danks didn't do anything fancy when he pitched but what he did do was eat innings which is most you can ask for from a pitcher especially being the 5th starter. Losing most of your opening day pitching staff in the first 2 months doesn't help. Getting rid of Danks for the sake of not wanting him now opens up 3 holes in the rotations with not alot of back ups just for the 2 spots doesn't make sense. You would have to replace at least 190 innings and 32 starts which on the open market would be coughing up a chunk of change besides the fact you already have 2 open spots in the rotation. Your not likely getting much back for him even if you sending money with him. If you he puts up same amount of innings and starts with a era in the low 4s then I'm fine with that as the 5th starter. Also the thing about him winning 11 starts is him having career year I would take. Quintana only put up 9 wins in each of the last 2 seasons and danks was only one win behind sale this year. People talking about wanting McCarthy as he only put up 10 wins this year and which is the highest hes ever won and hes always injured.

  20. QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 24, 2013 -> 06:48 AM) Unless Hahn is trying to trade one of the 3 LH starters, it makes little sense that Surkamp was acquired to become the 4TH. The need was for southpaws in the bullpen, and Downs will now be the primary LH reliever. Surkamp becomes a candidate for the other. Of course, it's obvious, despite this quote from mlbtraderumors.com: "Surkamp figures to compete with those three for the fourth and fifth slots in the rotation following Hector Santiago's trade to the Angels." One of Scott Merkin's tweets yesterday when the sox claimed him Surkamp gives CWS more starting depth for 5th spot. Also more move to maneuver in potential deals involving their rotation https://twitter.com/scottmerkin/status/415221549130477568
  21. White Sox website now has Surkamp listed as the 11th best prospect in the organization.
  22. White Sox fans should be rooting for the Red Sox. The last 4 times the Red Sox won the world series, the following year the White Sox made the playoffs including 3 trips to the world series with 2 championships. Could have been 3 championships if the black sox scandal didn't happen and they won.
