  1. QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 09:37 AM) you are very much right, but Lester is an elite pitcher. that is the selling point. One is only giving up money for him. If you get a guy that you can get with only money and don't have to give up a first pick for then you get other teams involved. The Giants are supposedly involved now but they might not have been if he had a qualifying offer. Same goes for the White sox in jose abreu. They only had to give up money for not a pick too. I bet if he had a pick attached to him the white sox wouldn't have bid as high.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 09:22 AM) There's no reason for the A's to trade Samardzija if they're not getting a high level talent back. A team in competition this year should be willing to give up a top prospect in exchange for a season of a pitcher who put up 4 WAR last year. There's no reason for Beane to accept less than a high level talent. Certainly not as high as what he gave up to get Samardzija, but still a very high level guy. Of course, there was no reason for him to give up Donaldson for the weak haul he got, so maybe the White Sox could get a steal here and maybe that's why they were in this conversation in the first place, but "assuming Billy Beane doesn't make another silly move" seems like a reasonable standard from my POV. Again the reason I believe Donaldson was traded was because he was going to get very expensive in arbitration. Beane wasn't ever going to lock him up so trade him now for prospects and use the money saved to invest back into team. Beane has to make every sent count with their payroll. It's going to be the same in trading samardzija. He gets to skip paying 10 million to him in 2015 and gets younger cost controlled prospects back. He does this all the time if someone is getting close to free agency or going to get expensive in arbitration.
  3. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 09:14 AM) There's a fairly strong precedent that shows that draft pick compensation affects the price of low-end free agents drastically, but doesn't affect the price of high-end free agents much at all. And it makes sense the more you think about it There isn't low end free agents getting compensation picks. It's really only the high end free agents getting compensation picks. 12 players got qualifying offers in 2014 were Max Scherzer, Victor Martinez, Russell Martin, Francisco Liriano, Hanley Ramirez, Nelson Cruz, James Shields, David Robertson, Melky Cabrera, Ervin Santana, Michael Cuddyer, and Pablo Sandoval. Those are high end free agents. Only other free agents that are higher end didn't get the qualifying offer is either traded during the season or were on options and team/player declined them.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 09:05 AM) I'd prefer a deal like that with Lester to trading Anderson for Samardzija and extending him at anything close to 5/$100. The money's higher but if you're paying 9 figures to a pitcher anyway...Lester's a better pitcher and you don't have to trade away something to get him. Of course, given the option I wouldn't spend 9 figures on a pitcher at all. Bad enough if the white sox have to compete against a better probably offer from Boston for Samardzija then it would be even worse money wise to compete against them for lester. Boston I think is going to go all out getting lester back.
  5. QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 08:59 AM) interesting, do you know what is salary demands??? also wanting and getting is two different things. btw, he will prob get it. Only thing I saw in him was possibly the years. Haven't seen much on santana sofar.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 08:55 AM) Wait, you're right, Lester would not receive compensation, forgot about him being traded. Because lester doesn't have a compensation pick his price will get really. I think his highest offer sofar is 6 yrs 138 million by cubs. Jon Heyman says don't be surprised if he gets up to 150 million.
  7. QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 08:49 AM) ok, i said i was not going to bring this up, but i have too. if the sox has to give up a group of major prospects, plus do a contract extension, i would sign Jon Lester. another option may be Ervin Santana. i would like to know what his terms would be. Buster Olney tweeted this the other day on ervin santana. Figure santana will be Turing 32 in December. Not surprisingly, Ervin Santana looking for as long of a deal as possible: Five years. https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/539886337575616512
  8. QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 08:07 AM) We've all been exploring lots of options to fill the hole in one corner outfield. The Dodgers still match up best for a trade with Sox. Having just acquired another outfielder, Chris Heisey, who is a true centerfielder, L. A. now has 7 outfielders, on their roster. They still need a SS, and consider Alexei a suitable candidate to fill that void. Therefore, I think that remains the most logical move. The question is: Which outfielder, and what terms, are most realistic and desirable? Although most of us would prefer one of the younger guys, such as Van Slyke, or even Pederson, someone like Ethier or Kemp is probably more realistic. So, we're back to salary relief included in a deal involving Alexei for Ethier or Kemp. Old "news" of course, but I just thought it was worth revisiting. Dodgers have 9 outfielders on their roster. Crawford, Heisey, Kemp, Schebler, Van Slyke, Ethier, Pederson, Jensen, and puig.
  9. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 12:40 PM) I am in full agreement. They can also exclusively negotiate with Samardzija at that point and they may view the cost-value of Samardzija to be less prohibitive than that of Hamels, Latos, or Cueto. Who knows for sure. Also, Leake strikes me as a 3/4 starter in the AL, not nearly as good as Hamels, Latos, Cueto, or Samardzija. Not saying they wouldn't or shouldn't have interest, but it doesn't strike me as the guy they'd want. Ultimately, Samardzija is going to want money. There is virtually no where in the United States (or Toronto) that these guys wouldn't play if you paid them enough. I also don't think the A's traded Donaldson because he was getting expensive considering they just signed Billy Butler to a 3/$30 deal. This is not about Samardzija making too much. This is about extracting more future value out of Samardzija then he will currently give them. $20 million per year over 5 years is too expensive for the A's though. Yes samardzija is going to want money but it is his choice of where he would prefer to get it at. Just because a team like Boston can offer more money doesn't mean he wants to be there. If all he cares about money then he signs with the highest bidder. If he looking at something else then he will forgo money from a team to play somewhere else. I guarantee that a player has turned down more money to play with a team he prefers. I do believe the expensiveness of Donaldson and the chance of getting more players at cost controlled terms is what Beane did the trade. Donaldson is in his first year of arbitration. He made $500,000 in 14 and based on mlb trade rumor arbitration projections he going to get 4 million more in 2015. Lawrie is also in arbitration eligible in 2015 and projected to get 1.8 million. They saved 2.7 million in swapping Donaldson for Lawrie and got 2 pitchers and a possible good ss prospect. Samardzija who they won't lock up is going to get about 10 million in arbitration. If Beane trades samardzija and gets prospects back he now saves the 10 million he would have spent for the year on samardzija which now equals butlers 2015 money.
  10. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 12:07 PM) Boston has the money to lock anyone up if they choose. Losing Samardzija will net a high draft pick if he leaves so that is also a chip for Beane. Boston could try to lock him up but he may not want to be there and just leave for free agency. Yes the high draft pick compensation for Beane is enticing but that means they have to keep him on the roster the whole year and pay him about 10 million. If they traded Donaldson cause he will get expensive do you really think they want to spend an extra 10 million on samardzija.
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 11:53 AM) I think they could easily acquire both Lester and Samardzija. Frankly, they need to as their rotation is incredibly thin. Frankly, the more I think about this, the more I think Beane is using the White Sox as leverage against the Red Sox. The Red Sox are in a much better position to trade for Samardzija both regarding their minor league depth, their major league team, and their ability to spend. I just don't think the White Sox can afford to trade quite a few of their guys right now. I do believe Boston can get both easily but if samardzija and his agent are keen on going to free agency and not talking extension then if your Boston wouldn't you rather acquire a pitcher to have control over like Cole hamels or a leake, latos, cueto they you might be better of a chance to lock up.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 10:58 AM) MLB Daily Dish ‏@mlbdailydish 59m59 minutes ago Jeff Samardzija trade still a possibility, Red Sox and White Sox reportedly top contenders http://sbnation.com/e/7083540 If Boston is truly in on samardzija then they probably won't do anything until lester signs. Honestly samardzija might not be moved until lester signs. The Boston thing can play into the hands of the white sox unless some other team comes in heavy for him. If lester goes back to Boston then I would think they might go after someone like Hamels who is signed through 2018 with a 2019 option. They will be trying to win for awhile and most likely the one yr of Samardzija might not be enticing enough for them IMO. Boston could also go for one of the reds pitcher with a good chance of trying to lock them up. If Boston gets lester and they go a different route for trading for a pitcher then that could maybe leave the white sox as a top spot for Samardjiza.

  14. QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 07:43 PM) i listen to the interview. what i found interesting and funny, it was like a msg from the sox org to us, the fans, to somewhat give us a heads up and to let us know, none of the major prospct will be traded. this is my opinion. The Sox shouldn't trade their top prospects for him. Hes a one year rental at this point. It would be kinda funny if the sox traded a one year worth package for him and then lock him up afterwards. I think the sox are going to make a bold move. I would say it would be with the starting pitching side. If the sox are investing in duke for 3 years and Laroche for 2 yrs then they have to be competing in right out of spring training. Means they have to invest in a good starting pitcher. something like Mccarthy, hammel and masterson are not #2 or 3 starter. I think they are looking at better to be competitive.

  16. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 02:51 PM) Johnson also hits for less power than Semien. By a lot. Right handed power is at a premium in the majors, especially if you can get it from a guy that plays 2B, 3B, or SS. Meanwhile, I'm sure the Sox could acquire Jemile Weeks from Baltimore for next to nothing. He's what he's done in the minors - .285/.380/.406/.786. And he's what Micah Johnson has done in the minors - .297/.366/.422/.787. Remarkably similar. If the Sox could substitute Micah in any move instead of Semien, then they absolutely should. Yes the difference between the two is power for semien vs speed for johnson. Sox have enough power especially if they upgrade LF with someone like cabrera. Power in terms of home runs is sporadic vs speed. Look at the royals. They didn't have enough power for home runs but they did it with speed on the base paths. Sox have power but can use extra speed with Eaton. With as much talk with the sox liking johnson I'm sure they aren't going to start adding his name to trades in stead of Semien.
  17. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 02:12 PM) Every time somebody mentions Johnson I always think, "You can't steal first base*" I hope I'm wrong but I don't see him being able to get on base enough in the majors to be a full-time starter. * - Unless you are AJ Pierzynski in Game 2 of the ALCS Johnson has gotten on base a .008 less than semien in the minors. Johnson has a .366 OBP and semien has a .374. Johnson hits a higher average at .297 vs semien at .272. I think johnson would have been first in line at second if it wasn't for the injury. I also believe he would have hit better in Charlotte if it wasn't for the nagging injury. Time will tell tho in spring training if he's ready or needs a bit more work in Charlotte.
  18. I like how alot of people are hardly mentioning johnson at second base. Keep putting semien and sanchez a head of him. Pretty sure sox have johnson going before the other two. If johnson can hit for average and gets on base then it's going to be fun watching that speed on the bases. I'm really hoping he works his way to the leadoff spot and eaton batting second is going to be alot of fun to watch.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 10:34 AM) So wait, why do we want a catcher who isn't all that good at catching? Our DH spot isn't very open. Ya I'm not high on him. Hasn't been able to hit as well since the ped suspension. I would pass
  20. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 10:18 AM) Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN 1m1 minute ago Other teams say the Padres have gotten more aggressive in marketing catcher Yasmani Grandal in trade discussions. Yes please. Keith law Grandal does a few things well but receiving isn't one of them. Pitchers preferred throwing to Rene Rivera. https://twitter.com/keithlaw/status/539455241268514816
  21. Dan Hayes said that since the sox got Laroche to dh and split some time at first and the sox are wanting to upgrade left field with a likely LH bat that viciedo is odd man out. Said likely to deal him for a young bullpen arm. Viciedo did hit 21 home runs which is tied 25 in al and 46 in mlb. Still young enough someone would probably take him. Dunn only hit 22 home runs and we got a young pitcher back for him.
  22. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 09:55 AM) I'm guessing he is just saying that because of the bogus ATL out report. Remind me to put baseball analyst in my Twitter profile. I can't imagine how much truth there is to the Braves rumors. The only one I would see the A's taking is Gattis with more control but I can't see the Braves taking a one year worth of Samardzija for him. Upton is owed 14.5 million for one year and really can't see the A's taking that much of a contract for 1 yr.
  23. Never heard of this guy before but says he's a baseball analyst Looks like the Market for SP Jeff Samardzija is down to Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox. #Redsox #MLB #WhiteSox https://twitter.com/MibeltRodriguez/status/...070453034516480
  24. QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Nov 29, 2014 -> 06:12 PM) My question is: Is Semien really that valuable? Keep seeing he could be the "center piece" to a deal and I'm sitting over here wondering if I missed something or what... Also just to clarify, Montas is the guy the Sox just got for... Dunn? Isn't he projected more as a late inning guy and not a starter? Montas was part of the peavy trade. Nolan sandburn was the pitcher in return for dunn
  25. I think Samardzija could maybe change his stance on signing a extension. The cubs kept trying to lock him up and but you got to realize thats a team far away from competing. I think for the cubs to sign free agents right now they have to over pay or wait to closer to competing. Oakland was never going to lock him up cause they don't do that for big free agents. They sell a couple years before free agency or when a player is hitting arbitration and might get expensive. The sox might be more enticing for they have good young core players ready now. Alexei and maybe semien could be good for Samardjiza. Alexei gives a stop gap for Oakland for ss and they could always turn around and trade him at the deadline with a year and half potentially to the acquiring team. I have to imagine if the sox are trading for Samardjiza then they hope they have a chance of signing him to a extension.
