  1. QUOTE(minors @ Jun 10, 2006 -> 01:48 AM) He thinks Al- Zarqawi is a human being he was nothing more than a murdering thug. He would have murdered people until he was taken down. This was a solid kill for the US!!! I hope you are enjoying hell Funny, I don't remember the part of the Bible where it was okay to kill other people. Yeah, Zarqawi was an asshat (to say the least) Berg's dad has it correct when he said: "I feel doubly badly, though, because Zarqawi is also a political figure and his death will re-ignite yet another wave of revenge, and revenge is something that I do not follow, that I do not ask for, that I do not wish for against anybody. It's an endless cycle. As long as people use violence to combat violence we will always have violence."
  2. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jun 10, 2006 -> 12:43 PM) How many times does it need to be said? These people only understand force and violence. There is nothing we can do to change the minds of people who are programmed from birth to despise America and whose life aspiration is to do a homicide bombing and take as many of us with them as they can. To defeat them there must be no restriction on the level of violence we inflict on these people. Winning the hearts and minds of a group of fanatics is a lost cause and only hamstrings the efforts being made to eradicate them. Only by massive eradication and use of an incredible amount of violence can we show the terrorists that massive eradication and using incredible amounts of violence is wrong. http://www.michaeljournal.org/images/iraq2.jpg -- I won't even hotlink the photo here because it is graphic. Click at your own risk. We sure changed that savage's mind, right?
  3. Uribe is a defensive asset on the field. I don't know what's going through his head that he's making defensive miscues -- whether it is his struggles at the plate or if it is because his wife was pregnant and just recently gave birth or what -- but he's got a better glove than Cintron can ever dream of having. Uribe needs to get back in the habit of doing the leg kick at the plate. It is mechanics that most likely can be fixed at the plate and nothing we need to 'Chicken Little' about. It is a fun new mantra and people need to start saying it: Bench players are not everyday players, bench players are not everyday players... There's a reason that we have moderately good bench players and it is called depth.
  4. I was having a little debate with my roommate tonight about who (any sport -- even pro wrestling) was the toughest athlete to lace up and work their ass off on a field/rink/ring. I didn't want to make it a poll but I'm interested in seeing peoples' answers. I'll start -- and I'll throw out kind of an obscure one. He's a pro wrestler by the gimmick name of Sabu. First off, he came back to wrestle after breaking his neck (botched back body drop landed him on his head). Secondly, during the famous/infamous Born to Be Wired he tore open his bicep which started to bleed badly. He taped it up haphazardly with athletic tape and finished the match for another 5-10 minutes. A third time he broke his jaw during a match. Instead of stopping and rushing the finish, he duct taped his head to keep his jaw shut and continued the match. Most recently, he wrestled with a broken arm, numerous cuts and part of his finger missing. He refuses to miss bookings to reccoperate from injuries. I'd say he's one badass athlete -- yet one of the more obscure. So who else should get added to this illustrious list?
  5. From ESPN.com re: Tenta BATON ROUGE, La. -- Former LSU wrestler John Tenta, known professionally as "Earthquake" while competing in the World Wrestling Federation, has died at the age of 42, the school said Thursday. Tenta, who lettered for the Tigers in the early 1980s when wrestling was a nationally renowned varsity sport at LSU, died after a lengthy battle with bladder cancer. "Big John," as he was known at LSU, also participated in football for the Tigers. Born in Surrey, British Columbia, he weighed 11 pounds, 3 ounces at birth. Recently he measured 6-foot-6 and weighed in at over 400 pounds, LSU said. After leaving LSU, Tenta briefly took up sumo wrestling in Japan before going into pro wrestling. He joined the World Wrestling Federation in 1989 and gained fame as "Earthquake" as he feuded with Hulk Hogan. Tenta performed for both World Wrestling Entertainment and World Championship Wrestling throughout the 1990s. In recent years he had lived in Florida. He is survived by his wife and three children. Yeah, his family has seen the Funker do a lot of crazy s***. But Terry wasn't in the Legends of Wrestling show in 1999 with Jake Roberts. You're probably thinking of the 1999 documentary called Beyond the Mat. They're easy to confuse. The Legends show I was referencing involved a very intoxicated Roberts slurring through a promo terribly and when he got into the ring, he proceeded to put the snake between his legs and made it look like a giant penis before his match with Jim Neidhart. That said, Beyond... is a great documentary. And if it is what you're thinking of, Funk's family was cautiously supportive of him taking the 3 way dance at the first ECW PPV. Mick Foley's kids/wife were the ones openly sobbing at the 1999 Royal Rumble show when Foley got clocked with the chair by the Rock -- especially in the back when Foley was being attended to by the medical staff.
  6. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 07:03 PM) That was a sad show. Jake and Funk are in terrible shape. Funk is in much better shape than he should be. He's 62 years old and still able to pull off relatively entertaining matches. He's been told by doctors that he should not even be able to walk without intense pain due to all the hardcore stuff he's put himself through (i.e. his numerous deathmatches in Japan, the classic Born to Be Wired against Sabu, etc.) Funk is in detrimental physical shape after 41 years of taking bumps and doing crazy s*** to entertain paying fans across the world. Roberts crashed and burned because of booze and drugs. There's a massive difference between the two.
  7. QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 06:39 PM) Yeah but didn't he then get Lucifer after that? Yep, he went "insane" and turned on the Ultimate Warrior after he helped Warrior train for his match against the Undertaker. He went from there to feud with Randy Savage and even had the viper "bite" (total kayfabe here) Savage when he got tied up in the ropes. Sad thing is that Jake could have been one of the better wrestlers and characters of the 80s/90s if it hadn't been for him abusing drugs and booze so damn bad. Anybody who saw the lowlights from the Legends of Wrestling show in 1999 knows exactly what I'm talking about.
  8. I can't wait to see the Sox sweep! /obligatory "Will Jon or Judy Show Up" commentary that is somehow missing from the thread
  9. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 12:58 PM) Kind of like a Jay Mariotti of the politico set. Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner!
  10. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 12:16 PM) But I thought that you libs were the champions of free speech? :rolly ^^^ It's unfortunate that she tends to stoop to this level, as she often makes very intelligent points. This type of inflammatory rhetoric destroys her credibility. In her book Treason, Coulter put events of the 1940s and 1950s into the wrong years, so she could blame Democrats. Now, that's just asinine and f***ing stupid to do -- and something easily avoidable. I don't care what she says because she's got the right to say it -- however, she also has to expect getting owned in debates when somebody calls her on her incoherent, factless, baseless s*** smears. This is almost as classic as when she wished that Tim McVeigh would have blown up the NY Times building and said it was a tragedy that he didn't. This kind of stuff is her claim to fame -- throwing s*** at a wall and seeing what sticks...even if it is devoid of facts, logic and reason.
  11. Gotta admire Coulter having her book released on a date that is an homage to her father. /obscure?
  12. QUOTE(juddling @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 04:40 PM) Prayers go out to his family. On another note....i would hardly call what he did 'wrestling'. The Natural Disasters were hired at Hulk Hogan's request because they were big guys and they made Hogan look good. They probably had less moves than Hogan...and that's hard to do. At the time...Hogan was getting alot of his friends jobs that didn't deserve them. I wouldn't necessarily say didn't deserve. Tenta had some damn good agility for a big man and had some very good non-Hogan matches (read: his fued with Jake 'The Snake' Roberts) but he was notoriously underused in WCW. Vince had/has a severe irrationality for big hoss guys even if they can't wrestle (Rob Conway, etc.) but I wouldn't put Tenta getting a job only because of Hogan's ego (which could have had multiple Congressmen during this time period) Tenta had some damn good talent for a big guy in the ring to pull off some moves not known for big guys + also to not legit hurt anybody with moves.
  13. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 05:22 PM) lol, they don't give a f*** about free speech. the only reason they took that case was to 'prove' they don't have any sort of political agenda. i suggest you look at what the vast majority of their cases are and stop being an ignorant, childish, ass. Yeah, a claim with no factual basis backing it up at all that sure convinced me that you're right!
  14. QUOTE(Iwritecode @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 01:19 PM) Wasn't he something else before he became know as Earthquake? Was he the guy that wore that blue African-like outfit? IIRC, he was a tag team with Tugboat (who also became know as something else). Tugboat became Typhoon and they were the tag team known as the Natural Disasters. And the blue African outfit was Akeem, the African Dream (basically the One Man Gang before Reverend Slick gave him a transformation) Tenta's gimmicks were the following: Canadian Earthquake, Earthquake, Avalanche, The Shark and Golga (part of the Oddities in WWE when he wore a mask)
  15. Happiness of the Katakuris (2001, dir. Miike Takashi) Notoriously known as the horror director that made Audition, this is a total divergence from his typical style. Think of it as "The Sound of Music" on acid. It is so damn funny but it is a real dark comedy. If you like Monty Python style films, you'll thoroughly enjoy this musical/drama/horror/comedy.
  16. QUOTE(juddling @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 12:58 PM) So the ACLU only looks out for the civil liberties of those that b**** the loudest? I thought it was the principle! Hmmm, maybe that shouldn't have been in green. Not b**** the loudest, just request that the ACLU take the case. But it seems to me that asking the ACLU to take the case would not be #1 on this specific kid's list of actions because methinks that he is not too big a fan of that organization.
  17. "Because You Loved Me" - Celine Dion It's a long story. I went to a Catholic high school and my buddy and I had a bet. He bet me $20 to go up and dance with our superintendent (a middle aged, conservative, austere doctorate holding Augustinian priest) at either our senior prom or at our senior dinner dance. Unfortunately for me, the superintendent no-showed the prom. The senior dinner dance rolls around and the superintendant is at a table with about 10 other teachers. The DJ had been playing some upbeat music, so I'm thinking "Sweet! I get a fast dance in and $20!" As I start talking to the teachers, I notice my friend is talking to the DJ. But I can't back out of this now. As I begin to ask the superintendant to dance with me, the opening to -- you guessed it -- that Celine Dion piece of crap starts playing. Unfortunately, I never got the $20 because the superintendant damn near ran away completely freaked out by the situation. "It's Raining Men" - The Weathergirls Another high school story. My high school was filled with some major league homophobes (who told stories of how they'd beat up gay kids, etc...just some real jackbooted assmunches) So, senior prom rolls around and they're all trying to dance + be all macho. My friend and I walk up to the DJ and I say "I want you to play a really rocking song because I want to see the impact here. I want you to play "It's Raining Men". The DJ doesn't miss a beat and says that it is next. Within 45 seconds of that song playing, my friend and I were the only guys on the dance floor with damn near every girl in the senior class. It was pretty hilarious to watch the homophobic guys start to get into it dancing to the song and then realizing what the song was -- and they ran off the damn dance floor like a scalded dog. "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey" - The Beatles The song that was playing when I got my first kiss.
  18. "John "Earthquake" Tenta passed away this morning at the age of 42 after a lengthy battle with bladder cancer. Tenta is survived by his wife and three kids." Any fan of old school 80's wrestling definitely remembers Earthquake. From the 'Quakeburgers' in the feud with Jake Roberts to his matches with Hogan, he'll be sorely missed.
  19. I just started getting into a bit of an exercise routine (6', 155 lbs.) to tone up and start feeling a little better. Only a couple days in. Started with pre-breakfast walk of about a mile or two, breakfast (Cheerios + milk, banana, water)...some situps, pushups and jumping jacks, lunch about noon (PB+J, water, some celery and carrots) and then dinner (usually baked chicken, corn or another vegetable, rice, water) Then some juice or water for the rest of the night. Looking into local gym memberships in CU as well. Anybody know any decent gyms in Champaign-Urbana without insane membership fees, shoot me a PM. (and CRCE etc. won't work for me anymore because I'm not a student) I gotta see what I can handle with the pay of my new job -- being a professional and all.
  20. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 7, 2006 -> 07:10 AM) No ACLU involvement? Mainly, and this is according to the ACLU of So. California page -- the kid didn't ask them to take on the case. http://www.aclu-sc.org/Legal/Intake/ A lot of times, you have to ask the ACLU to jump on board before they will. (i.e. the prayer kid that raised a furor over here) The kid asked the ACLU to take the case. I haven't seen any info that the kid in this case asked the ACLU. And Nuke, the ACLU defended the rights of the Nazis to march in Skokie before. So please, have a nice wonderful cup of STFU and go out and actually learn about the topic before you start sputtering ignorantly like a quivering fart.
  21. Dunno what CA state law is for education, but there are some SC cases. Tinker v Des Moines basically states that as long as it is not disruptive to the teaching, it is protected. From Wikipedia: However, though Tinker remains one of the most frequently-cited Court opinions in society today, some argue the ruling's applicability has been limited by subsequent decisions. In Bethel School District v. Fraser, a 1986 case, the Supreme Court held that a high school student's sexual innuendo–laden speech during a student assembly was not constitutionally protected. While the Fraser court distinguished Tinker, the Fraser court carved out an exception for "indecent" speech. Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier, where the court ruled that schools have the right to regulate, for legitimate educational reasons, the content of non-forum, school-sponsored newspapers, also limits Tinker's application. The Court in Hazelwood clarified that both Fraser and Hazelwood were decided under the doctrine of Perry Education Association v. Perry Local Educators Association. Such a distinction keeps undisturbed the Material Disruption doctrine of Tinker, while deciding certain student free speech cases under the Nonpublic Forum doctrine of Perry. Being a big fan of Tinker vs Des Moines, I'd say that the kid has a case (but that's me not knowing the details of the open lunch policy at the specific school -- perhaps advertising the "walk-out" is the difference that crossed it into disruptive behavior whereas the other walk-out kids didn't advertise it within the school...But that's the only thing I can think of as a distinction)
  22. QUOTE(jackparkman @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 03:40 PM) stole danni california? from who? Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "Mary Jane's Last Dance"
  23. Rarely (if I'm around), it may be Mike Malloy for a few minutes but nothing too substantial. The last time I listened to talk radio was a morning I was on WIND am radio talking education policy on "Extreme Wisdom".
  24. It is a charter school. Technically, they are minorly different from the regular everyday public school. Charter schools get freed from some of the traditional rules, regulations and statutes that apply to other public schools, in exchange for some type of accountability for producing certain results, which are set forth in each charter school's charter. So, one would need to look at their charter to see what sort of details are in there first. Perhaps the details of the charter would go into what sort of students would be attending etc. I'm not defending what they're doing, just throwing out the educational detailed technicalities for debate purposes. That said, I f***ing hate charter schools because too often bulls*** like this, demanding that teachers stay on the job for an insane amount of hours (i.e. 6 am - 7 or 8 pm every school day, even if the teacher does not coach etc.) and they're able to get around a lot of the standards and labor laws.
  25. Bot 4 Recap Dye singles to left field. Crede strikes out on foul tip. Gload strikes out swinging. (Jermaine Dye caught stealing 2B) 1 Hits 0 Runs 0 Errors 0 LOB Rheinecker 52 pitches through 4 IP. After 4, the score is 2-2
