December 9, 20169 yr @Cardinals, OF Dexter Fowler reportedly close to deal. Club hasn’t confirmed. https://t.co/krp83q10fI https://twitter.com/MLB/status/807034935949271040 I'm curious to see if Cubs fans will boo him Johnny Damon style. Edit: Fowler's deal expected to be big with stl, as @dgoold said. Unconfirmed, but word is 5 yrs, at least 16M/yr. https://twitter.com/JonHeyman/status/807040838509457408 Heyman goes on to say 80/90 mil is rumored. Edited December 9, 20169 yr by Ro Da Don
December 9, 20169 yr Bernstein had linked an article this morning about how Heyward had felt uncomfortable in St. Louis and that had Fowler nervous about going there too. I guess once they opened their pocketbooks, it changed his mind. Zero chance Fowler gets booed at Wrigley in 2017, he'll get big cheers.
December 9, 20169 yr Good move by cardinals. Always amazed how their teams are so much better than the sum of their parts look.
December 9, 20169 yr Dude got paid off a career year at 30. He's a solid player but I'm not giving him that kind of deal.
December 9, 20169 yr QUOTE (Baron @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 09:00 PM) Cubs fans are so salty right now You are not kidding. Some of those comments are hilarious. Pissed about Fowler leaving for the $. Wtf did Heyward do last year? I can't stop laughing. Even after FINALLY winning the WS, they still play the role of the victim. Hysterical! Edited December 9, 20169 yr by BlackSox13
December 9, 20169 yr That year he went to the Astros, almost any team in baseball could have traded for Fowler for a couple of B and C prospects. His value was similar to Trumbo/Segura coming into 2016. Edited December 9, 20169 yr by caulfield12
December 9, 20169 yr Author It's official - 5 years, $82.5 million for Fowler + full no trade clause. Edited December 9, 20169 yr by Ro Da Don
December 9, 20169 yr QUOTE (Ro Da Don @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 10:12 AM) It's official - 5 years, $82.5 million for Fowler + full no trade clause. Congrats to Fowler as his recent play earned him that payday Personally I would not have given out that contract to a player after a career year Fowler is around a 2 WAR player due to poor defense, which is not likely to improve age 30-35
December 9, 20169 yr Author QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 9, 2016 -> 12:51 PM) Congrats to Fowler as his recent play earned him that payday Personally I would not have given out that contract to a player after a career year Fowler is around a 2 WAR player due to poor defense, which is not likely to improve age 30-35 Supposedly STL vastly overpaid to ensure they'd land him for sure. I agree with you, though. Huge contract for a solid contributer.
December 10, 20169 yr 5 years, 82.5 MM, and a disappointed Cubs fanbase. I hope he hits .400 against the Cubs and terrorizes them. Cardinals have some work to do to compete with that team, and this is definitely a step in the right direction.

It's definitely a bit of an overpay coming off a career year but the Cardinals have tons of.money despite crying poor, so I think it's a good move on their part

Apparently them going hard after Fowler was in part a response to the talent level the White Sox were asking for on Eaton. Once Eaton moved they jumped in with money to make sure they didn't come away empty handed.
