3 Remaining Needs: NL West

Figured I'd post this here since the Hot Stove season is more of an ice cold freezer and there's almost zero news every day. Lists that the Giants could use a left fielder and third baseman (shifting Nunez into a super-utility role which I actually suggested here before).

What would you guys want if the Giants traded for Frazier, Melky, plus cash (covering some/most of Melky's salary)?

Wondering if the Giants could also use some bullpen arms, as both Romo and Casilla are free agents.

This article does list a reliever as a need.

Giants say they are tapped out and probably view all of their internal options for outfield more favorably. Not to say they aren't a candidate at deadline if that fails.

They have any close to expiring deals we could take back?

For anyone curious about where the Giants payroll currently stands.

Looks like they have some room play with. Doubt they would be interested in Melky but Frazier makes sense.

The problem is they are over the cap and would pay a 30% tax on any incremental payroll. Now, that doesn't necessary rule out an addition, as it seems like they still made a hefty profit last year despite paying the tax, but it does make a move less probable. The only plus is it does sound like 2018 is the bigger concern, so guys on one year deals would be attractive to them. I really wish I knew how eating money affected tax considerations.

Not going to pretend to know a ton about their system, but the Giants system doesn't look to be a great matchup for us. A few good prospects at the top that they probably wouldn't give up and then a bunch of 23-26 year olds with limited ceilings after that. Of course Frazier/Melky would get us a pretty limited return so maybe it wouldn't be too hard to figure a trade out.

I think a Frazier for Beede straight up would be a good deal for both teams.

That's why I think they do match up. Frazier and Melky (and Robertson) would help them, but do not warrant top prospects in return. They Giants I presume have plenty of second-tier prospects (just because they usually do). The Giants don't hype their prospects like the Red Sox and Cubs do, so there may be a fit.

My preference, as I've mentioned before, would be to take a hard look at their backup catcher.

The 2017 luxury tax threshold is 195M so the Giants have almost 40M in space to fill out the balance of their roster. This doesn't mean they would trade for Frazier and/or Melky, just that they have room to play with.

This article seems to disagree with you. Are you including arbitration and minimum salary obligations? And remember, the luxury tax is based on the AAV of all contracts and not just their current rate. This would most definitely increase their total payroll from a tax perspective.

Looks like Sportrac is behind on the '17 payroll obligations. I'll take it that McCovey Chronicals knows their team so their numbers are probably more accurate. Thanks for the link.

For now, I think it's safe to say that Melky and Frazier aren't going to the NLW if they are traded this winter.
