FS Podcast: Nick Hostetler & two of his scouts talk 2017 draft

Featured Replies

This is a good one. Our latest podcast covers the recent draft class, and has interviews with Scouting Director Nick Hostetler (the guy who ran the Sox draft), as well as the scouts who found Jake Burger (Clay Overcash) and Gavin Sheets (Abe Fernandez). Interesting view into the scouts' minds in this process.

By the way, if you happen to already be a subscriber to our Podcast via iTunes or Podomatic, it's possible you may have received a truncated version of this podcast before getting the correct one. It should show as about 50 minutes long. If you get one that is more like 27 minutes, you may need to delete that one. Sorry for that technical issue. But the one that is out there now is correct.

That might be the first time ever I have heard a guy in this position say that the players weren't their first choices.

This was great. Henzman definitely will be given a chance to start. Have a feeling they will keep Tyler Johnson at back of the pen

And to add to this, this is a must listen to podcast. There is SO MUCH amazing detail and information on individual players that hasn't been publicly said this point.

....one follow up....who taught Nick how to pronounce Binghamton?

Haha I was going to say that. There's no "p" in it

Awesome job raBBit. Seriously, what a great f***ing podcast. Everyone should listen to this one whether you're a big follower of the minor leagues or not.

What was the take on the arm bar/swing mechanics issue with Burger...?

While were on the subject, the interviewer referred to Craig Dedelow as "De-del-low". I know the family here in NWI, it's just "Deed-low".

But as far as the content goes, I love hearing Hostetler get excited about some of the guys they got in the later picks. Also really cool to hear him talk about how much he appreciates interacting with fans and having people come up to him and show support for the rebuild.

Interesting part talking about how Dan Fabian was pushing the college reliever as new value idea. Not sure I buy it but it makes sense. Reminds me of college first baseman though.

I guess he could make that argument based on Reed for Davidson and Hector Santiago not being a starter the first four years of his minor league career, turning into Giolito/Lopez/Dunning...and now Jones/Burdi, although Nate was obviously drafted as a starter.

Going back 15 years ago, Josh Fogg as closer for Florida.
