I think Kahnle's floor is what the Red Sox paid for Tyler Thornburg, which was Yeison Coca (Red Sox #25), Josh Pennington (Red Sox #22), Mauricio Dubon (Red Sox #7) and Travis Shaw. Obviously we don't want a major leaguer like Shaw, we prefer prospects, but he had 5 years of control and was worth 2.2WAR when he was traded.

 

I think if you look at the teams that are in the race: Brewers, Cubs, Red Sox, Yankees, Tampa, Dodgers, Diamondback, Rockies, Astros, there will be an arms race for sure.

I'm not so sure that that's obvious. We have our prospects. The team is torn down (or will be in 2 weeks). Soon it's build-up time, and you can start taking players with 5 years of control. Relievers are a different story -but position players, sure.

These other rebuilders had to spend 2 years amassing prospects. We didn't.

I think some of the best values are likely to be MLBers who haven't produced yet (or whose production has dropped off after an initial run of good play). With prospects, everything tends to be sunshine and rainbows. The minute a young guy plays badly in the majors, people start getting down on them.

Another laudatory fangrphs article on Kahnle today...comparing him to Andrew Miller.

The Sox need a closer when D Rob is moved. If Kahnle isn't going to fetch much, which he probably won't due to his short track record of success - to me there's little reason to move him.

Alright - my point more is instead of giving him away for pennies on the dollar, why not roll the dice and see if he succeeds as closer. Then he could be worth a fortune. Again, this is on the premise that he doesn't currently bring a lot back with his short track record. This isn't a fire sale - giving away pieces for less than full value or potential value wouldn't be smart.

 

And now Levine has him allegedly in a Yankee deal that is in the works. So we'll see. If they get a a lot back for him, then fine.

How bout that guy who got 3 hits against the Sox right after he got called up, forget his name. Get him and a catcher prospect and two live arms who are lower level and call it a day.
