2004 budget

The papers are saying KW said our budget will only go up marginally. We can't compete at 55 million, can we?

That is pure BS. With the increase in ticket prices, concessions, parking, and the increase in attendance, we should have a corresponding increase in payroll, otherwise the fans are getting screwed again.

AL-wise? No. s***ty AL Central-wise? Yes. That is all this Organization as it currently is is worried about. They hope the Sox catch fire IF they make the PostSeason.

Just win the AL Central baby. :fyou JR

That's the way it's always been. They just want to put a "competitive" team on the field, not a championship caliber team.

Yeah I think all JR cares about is making a profit rather than breaking even with a Championship Caliber team out there.

The Southtown and Sun-Times are saying our huge offer to Colon is 3 years for a total of 30-33 million. That won't be enough.

What increases are you talking about..? We've gotten no information about any further increases.

By the way.. the parking co get's 80% of the increased revenue until the start of the 2005 season. They had the Sox by the balls when they threatened to walk - thus leaving the Sox with no attendants at all which would mean no parking - and signed a sweet 2 year deal in 2002 for the '03 and '04 seasons. That deal was the reason for the $2 increase this year.

I think he meant last year. Increased prices and increased sales should equal increased payroll.

Yeah that is exactly what I was talking about. We had a 20% increase in attendance, on top of the 20% increase in ticket prices, yet we only get a "marginal" increase in payroll. That is BS.

It will possibly be a 5% to 8% payroll increase.

You forget that with the increases in the fans comes the additional cost of vendors, parking attendants, concessions, security, etc, etc...

And like I mentioned previous.. Colon got paid, Koch got paid, etc, etc..

I'd be ok with an 8% raise. Teams with lesser payrolls have gotten the job done.

The players raises are a part of the payroll. If that number is taken up by raises that doesn't bother me, as long as our payroll total increases to reflect the added burden passed onto the fans.

And aren't the concessions based on contracts awarded to the concessionaires? So in other words if they have increased costs, they have to deal with it, just as if they have increased profits they get to keep those also? Parking has already become a fixed cost as you said in another thread that is now a fixed long term cost, because of a contract for that also. I wouldn't be surprised if security is also contracted out.

Let's say our current payroll is 55 million. Add 8%, and you're at just below 60 million. Historically, very few teams have "gotten the job done", if the job is make the playoffs, let alone win the World Series, at that salary level.

As revenues go up.. cost goes up - that sounds kinda condescending, but I don't mean it to be ;) . The more cars to park.. the more people needed to direct those cars. The more people to sell beer and hot dogs to, the more people to pay to do so.. etc, etc.. While I'm sure there are contracts in place.. I'm sure they have clauses. And I'm sure they get paid no matter what. The Sox wouldn't make s*** if the service wasn't there.

I have not heard anything about any further increases - to the fans. I feel confident that we wont. But a 5% to 8% increase dedicated to player salaries - which is what it sounds like to me - unfortunately seems in line with the performance.

One more thing.. Sox insurance (liability), for obvious reasons, hit the roof this year. Corg might be able to shed some additional light on that, but knowing how those premiums effect LOC's, It would not surprise me if that put a minor dent in avaliable cash as well.

2002 Angels 99-63 $61,721,667

Hmm, I remember this team having a little bit of success in 2002....with a low payroll.

Are the Marlins and Twins under 60 mil?

That wasn't that low of a payroll. I think it was 65 million at the time and the very next year it jumped into the 80's.
