Jesse Chavez on Sox starters list

A source confirmed that free agent Jesse Chavez is on the list of stopgap starters as the Sox vow not to rush any of their talented but unfinished prospects in the upper minor leagues.

Chavez, 34, could fill a role Miguel Gonzalez filled for most of the last two seasons. The Sox were interested in Chavez before the 2016 season and he can relieve as well as start and mentor younger pitchers.

Chavez posted a 7-11 record and 5.35 ERA in 138 innings for the Angels last season. Chavez started in 21 of his 38 appearances for the Angels and has pitched for seven teams during a 10-year career.

The Sox don’t expect to contend in 2018 and would be tempted to move a prospect only if it brings back a major-league player under several years of team control.

Has anyone checked to see if he has a pulse? They have? Then I'm ok with this.

I'd be interested in a one year deal with a player like Chris Tillman depending on the price. He was terrible in 2017, but is only a year removed from being a solid starter.

Going after a stopgap starter the caliber of Chavez tells me they expect Kopech to be up relatively quickly.

Or the fact that you have 4 spots filled in the rotation rght now and have rodon on the dl till he comes back plus 3 rookies in the rotation.

Wouldn't look too far into it Chief

I'd like to sign Bucholz and Tillman and try and flip them in July

You guys are missing my point. Chavez sucks, he’d simply be a placeholder. A guy like Tillman is a potential flip candidate, but will also cost more money. If you don’t think Kopech will be up until closer to the All-Star break or later, you probably invest in a guy you can flip. If you think he’ll be up by the end of May, you sign a place-holder like Chavez that can be cut when needed. To me, it’s blatantly obvious what this implies assuming the Chavez rumor is true.
