If he's still hitting .220 at the end of the season then he won't be breaking a half billion. But if you wanted him to extend right now, you'd have to pay him that much to keep him from the open market. That's the first and obvious reason why he won't be signing an extension right now. Based on his performance this year, I'm still guessing he'll take a lower dollar amount deal but with a 1-2 year opt out.
