White Sox Roster Shuffle - full report from FutureSox

A bit worried somebody could snatch Thompson

I could see Toronto Blue Jays taking Mendick. Hiring of Carson Cistulli Fringe 5 was always high on him.

Great call.

Meh. Mendick has zero future with the White Sox.  Not sure why someone would pick him, but if they did,  it wouldn't be any big loss.

Is there a link to the 40 man roster itself?

The question is whether he has value to others.  If so, use the value.  Trade excess, don't give it away.

I still don't see why Hahn consistently trades for Rule 5 eligible players during a rebuild.

It's not just about if they are worthwhile prospects, it's also the caveat that they need to be ML ready enough to be able to survive an entire season on the major league club, otherwise they get sent back to their old team. Will any teams think Mendick is ready to spend all of 2019 in the majors after having only played as high as AA? That's the question.

Most would say no; a rebuilder might give it a shot.  And any pitcher can be stashed in the pen with relative ease.

The Sox aren't going to lose all of these guys.  But the Sox have made several moves that helped other teams with their 40 man problems.   There is some real riff-raff  that remains on the 40 man that makes it odd that they would take the chance.

I don’t follow.  Are you suggesting we should not have acquired Frare from the Yankees for international bonus pool we couldn’t use because they had 40 man problems?  If so, how does that make any sense?

Regarding the so called “riff-raff”, those guys will be discarded as we make external additions.  For now, they can stay on the 40 man roster and provide organizational depth.

As for fringe guys like Thompson & Mendick, the odds suggest you’re way better off not protecting these guys too early.  Look at Clarkin for example.  We put him on the 40 man a year too early and to create roster space had to try to sneak him through waivers.  Instead of a  team being forced to use a 25 man roster spot on him for a full year, now a team only had to take a temporarily flier on him with a 40 man spot.  With fringe guys, I’d much rather keep them off the 40 man as long as possible and make a team select them in the Rule 5 draft.
