Cubs get him for Martin Maldanado.

@soxfan2014 another example of a DFA'd player not going immediately on waivers.... ?

Ha, I never said that the claim had to be immediately. Just that they can be traded while in the waiver period.

Well considering you specialize in inverse logic I would say we should get him.

Would be a pretty good replacement for Luery if we are able to get anything for him

If nothing else Madrigal will have someone to keep him company at the amusement park when the rest of the team goes on a roller coaster.

Not to rehash that convo...but you're wrong on that man.  Kemp just hadn't been placed on waivers yet, as the Astros had 7 days to make a decision.  If he was, and was claimed (and he definitely would have been claimed by an AL) club, the Astros would have been only able to trade him to that club, or pull him back off waivers.

Yes, the decision is ultimately letting him go for nothing, releasing him or trading him....while on waivers.

Edit: In the bolded, you're confusing that with the old August trade waivers.

Ugh.  No.  That is not how it works.  A guy cannot be traded while he is on waivers (unless you trade him to the team that claims him).

The process is:

1) DFA player

2) Either place immediately on waivers, or attempt to trade during 7 day window, or release.

3) If acceptalbe trade is not found during 7 day period, place said player on waivers in hopes he clears and can be outrighted to AAA, or release

So the Cubs traded Mike Montgomery for Tony Kemp.  Yikes

Ya, that's right.  They can only trade him to that club.  I don't think they have the option to pull him back.  My bad on that.
