Joe Kelly suspended 8 games

Featured Replies

And for the record that equals about 21 and a half games in a normal season.

Manfred is just so unbelievably bad at his job.

Yeah, this is insane. The Astros are the ones who CAME OUT OF THE DUGOUT.

Which according to MLB's rules this year, is supposed to be an automatic suspension. Kelly was walking to his dugout jawing at then, but still heading to the dugout, the Astros are the ones who came out.

Joe Kelly: Suspended 8 games for not hitting batters.

Astros: Suspended 0 games for defrauding MLB, likely ruining the careers of several players, and in this instance, nearly starting a fight.

Gurriel for fewer games for being racist and got to serve those after the World Series.

In addition to this, I want to add that Roberts got suspended, but not Dusty, who said this shit.

Astros are going to be murdered by fans next year.

I kind of get it though - from MLB's perspective - you know players are going to be gunning at the Astros and somewhere the league has to maintain player safety.  If they don't send a message hard out of the gate, it is a slippery slope and they'll be getting drilled all season long and the inevitable will happen, which is potentially a pretty significant injury or two.

Now you can say - so what - they deserve it, but the league has to do what it can to protect its players and I think swift action here made sense given the circumstances.  Certainly on the higher end of the equation given short season, but I get why they sent a message out of the gate.  Kelly also has past issues and in some ways isn't he a bit of a hypocrite (wasn't he part of the Red Sox team that cheated?).

I understand suspending Kelly.

The Astros left the dugout in clear violation of the safety of play rules. The team should suffer consequences. The fact that they are not receiving those consequences is exactly how the Marlins situation happened, and if we lose this season it's because players aren't following rules they agreed to and MLB isn't enforcing rules it agreed to.

That I don't disagree with either - I was more commenting on Kelly getting such a harsh treatment but would agree Astros should have received something, especially relative to COVID.
