JR actually reached out to Leyland to see if he's like to come back to manage the team after Lamont got fired. Not in the immediate aftermath but some time in that time period. Leyland said no thanks because he was upset over the way the Sox dealt with Lamont who was a close friend and whom he recommended for the job originally.

Jerry being Jerry with Lamont (and others) cost the Sox the chance of hiring Leyland. Jim knew firsthand how Jerry operated, told Jerry Hard Pass after resigning from his Pirates job dealing with a similar cheap ass owner. Went on to manage three World Series with Miami and Detroit, and made the Hall of Fame. Jim made wise decisions, stuck with situations where ownership committed to winning, or abruptly walked away leaving money on the table when the situation was not right. The White Sox job was not a good situation. Miami was a great situation and he took advantage. Jerry ordered the White Flag Trade in what would have been month four of Jim's tenure here. Hard Pass indeed.

Jim choose working for a solid guy in Dave Dombrowski, fired by Hawk and Jerry a decade earlier, and won the World Series. Jim returned out of retirement to work for Dave Dombrowski once again, this time in Detroit. Beat the White Sox like a drum for a decade starting in 2006.
