Yikes.  So he can at least play 3B but his bat/power would obviously play worse there than SS.

If he really has a back problem, 3b seems problematic to me for different reasons.

Uh-oh.

Seems like so much of this is about diametrically-opposed viewpoints on Colson Montgomery's potential...and Quero to a lesser extent.

It's the same things that we have all been talking about.  Regressions and depth.

I don't really see an issue with the Sox trying Colson at SS even at the MLB level, but I do wonder if at least getting him some 3B time would make sense. Like a 5 at SS, 2 At 3B type of schedule. Do we really want all his experience at 3B coming at the MLB? I kinda have some concerns with his approach and swing too. He seems to take an absurdly high count of pitches right down the middle. It's like the scouting report says just put it dead center over the plate because he won't swing at that.

Eh…if you’re not sure if the guy is going to stick at SS then the thing you want for him is time to focus on being a SS. Reps at SS, drills and practice at SS. Play him there until you decide you’re moving him, because once you move him, he should spend all his time improving at that position.

Id also worry that playing 3b even part time might be an issue for his back, if that is the problem.

Agreed.  This should be decided in Charlotte in the first few months of the season before he is even called up.  That way, you get the extra year of contract and get an idea of where he should be positioned.
