2025 ALCS/NLCS

"The current competitive-balance tax limit penalized teams who spent over $237 million on player salaries and benefits in 2024, using various tax rates on any amounts spent beyond that and the higher thresholds. The greater the degree by which you surpassed the limit, the higher your tax due, up to a maximum of 90% taxation for the top bracket—with repeat offenders facing escalating penalties. It's a big reason why teams like the Dodgers are trying to defer as much money as they can, in order to reduce their CBT obligations...

All in all, it's highly likely the Brewers are recipients of the supplemental commissioner's discretionary fund, and have been for some time. As a result, they probably have nearly $10 million more than we've been accounting for, and every incentive to roll it back into the team. It might not sound like much, but combined with the return of the FanDuel TV deal, the Brewers may have found around $12-$14 million more in their pockets this offseason. From what was a very tight payroll approaching the new year, it seems some additional funds have materialized. Can they use it to reinforce their infield mix? Add some thump to their lineup? Who knows, but the funds are now there to make a move..."

At the time of the trade, there was little reason to believe Vaughn would become a major factor for Milwaukee this season. He had batted .189 with a .218 on-base percentage and .314 slugging percentage in 48 games with the White Sox, who eventually sent him to the minor leagues. The Brewers initially kept him in the minors after acquiring him.

But he got called back up to the majors July 7 after Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins went on the injured list with a sprained left thumb. Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy greeted Vaughn by letting him know he would probably get sent right back to the minors if he continued chasing pitches outside the strike zone.

Vaughn homered off Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto in his first at-bat with the Brewers and improved his chase rate in making a remarkable transformation. He batted .308 with a .375 on-base percentage and .493 slugging percentage in 64 games with Milwaukee.

“This guy’s a gamer,” Brewers president of baseball operations Matt Arnold said. “He’s been through a lot, and he’s failed, just like all of us. We’ve all failed in this sport. If you haven’t, you haven’t been doing it long enough. So we’ve all failed. For that guy to come in here and be himself and put the team on his back at times this year is really awesome.”

Vaughn offered simple reasons for his dramatic improvement.

“Change of scenery, being around some different coaches, different stuff and just playing free,” he said.

Vaughn put the Brewers ahead Saturday by connecting on a 3-2 pitch from Colin Rea and hitting a 383-foot drive over the left-field wall with two outs in the fourth. That cleared the way for Misiorowski to earn the Game 5 win.

EZ win for the Jays tonight, right? Seattle is out of pitching. Jays offense is on fire. Seattle’s bats are cold but maybe bound to warm up?

Seattle pitching needed only 100 pitches total tonight to get that Game 1 win.

Just like he thrives as a supporting player on the field, his presence also helped strenghten the theme of this Andy McCullough article about the Brewers' shorter-than-average roster:

The average big-league hitter in 2025 registered at 72.3 inches, just north of 6 feet, according to Elias. With the exception of Christian Yelich, the 6-3 face of the franchise, no Brewers regular exceeds that standard. Among the players, the lack of height does not go unnoticed, especially when watching [Sal] Frelick, catcher William Contreras (5-10), first baseman Andrew Vaughn (5-10), shortstop Joey Ortiz (5-10), outfielder Isaac Collins (5-8) and third baseman Caleb Durbin (5-7) exit the diamond.

“There are times where we sit on the bench and you look out after they’re running in off the field, and you’re like, ‘Man, we’re tiny,’” veteran pitcher Brandon Woodruff said. “We’re fielding a team that’s tiny. But man, these dudes, it’s just a different brand of baseball.”

The White Sox have fielded their share of height-challenged players even before the Brewers made it cool, although their exploits tended to validate Randy Newman's lyrics with lesser outcomes ranging from "Dominic Fletcher hitting one homer in 72 games" to "Vaughn's White Sox career" to "Andrew Benintendi's White Sox career to date." (Don’t forget Chase Meidroth, Nishida and Bergolla…) Now that the White Sox are actively emulating Milwaukee in hopes of maximizing their talent, I wouldn't expect that to change. For instance, it's not hard to read about Caleb Durbin ...

A couple years ago, Murphy visited the Arizona Fall League to watch some prospects. He found himself smitten with Durbin, then a stocky infielder in the New York Yankees organization. “I’m like, ‘Look at that little s—,’” Murphy said. “I just loved the way he played.” [...]

Unwilling to duck out of the box when pitchers threw inside, he led the National League after getting hit by pitches 24 times. His peskiness extended a lineup that finished the regular season tied with the Dodgers for seeing the fifth most pitches per plate appearance. These are some of the, ahem, little things that helped Milwaukee rank third in runs in 2025.

On a serious note, there was a lot of bitching and moaning about Raleigh over Judge for MVP.   Raleigh has continued to lead his team in every way in this playoffs, he absolutely deserves it

Toronto is lucky that it's a 7 game series. These 2 games were supposed to be tough for Seattle because their pitching was so spent. Now they get an off-day to recharge and will be pitching their best starters in Seattle while up 2-0. It's a very tough task ahead for the Jays.

I’m not understanding the butt plug association. Please explain.

(Words I never thought I’d say)

His nickname is “big dumper” because he has a big ass, which I guess this means it will plug him up.

I dunno, it’s a lot.  Not sure I would want to be known as that guy lol
