Bruce Levine Talks

Featured Replies

Listening on ESPN radio 1000, he said the white sox have talked to baltimore and seattle about possible Ordonez deal.

Here's the detail:

Baltimore - Ordonez (some addtl players)

Sox - Jay Gibbons and a starting pitcher

Seattle - Ordonez (some addtl players)

Sox - Freddy Garcia and a young SS named Lopez

Bruce said with likely Ordonez not being signed next year, trading him and getting the most out of Maggs is the best thing KW can do.

Also, other deals that just took place.

Sheffield agreed principle with the Yanks.

Richie Sexson to D'backs for Junior Spivey, Lyle Overbay, a pitcher and Counsell

if Sexson couldn't come to us (and I think I was the only one who wanted him) I am glad he is staying in the NL

I'd take a Jay Gibbons, Kurt Ainsworth and Jack Cust for Maggs deal (That's only if Colon, or another top-notch pitcher isn't signed).

NO Freddy Garcia!

That's all we can get for Maggs????? I would rather keep him for at least half a year. If thte Sox are somehow in the race in July, then you keep him. If we are playing medicre baseball and out of it, trade him. Look what we gave up for Carl Everett. Maggs would get a lot more.

I see alot of Joe Borchard in Cust, Im not sold on him.

Yeah, but there's a big difference between the two. They both have huge power potential, but unlike Borchard, Crust takes A LOT of pitches. He might only hit .250-.260, but he'll take a 100+ walks every year and he should be good for 30-35 HR's.

I do not like either deal, OK for Konerko not Maggs

Sorry to tell ya this, but Konerko isn't worth s***. We would have to give up a prospect just for someone to take him off our hands.

As much as I like Ordonez, and would prefer he stay, Gibbons and Ainsworth and Cust would be a good deal for the Sox.

If the Sox had to give up anything else ... no.

As for Garcia from Seattle, there are other pitchers on the Mariners I would prefer.

Tell me something I do not know , the deals are s*** plain and simple, Maggs for peanuts forget it.

This is depressing. If the Sox trade Maggs for Gibbons and Ainsworth I'll be disappointed. Maggs should be worth more than that. Maggs for Gibbons and Ponson and you have something, but that can't happen.

both of those deals are pretty bad when you consider how good Ordonez is. The problem is, with the White Sox content on keeping their payroll at $60 mil, Williams has very few options right now and in order to put together a good team he is going to have to dump salary and trading Ordonez and his $14 mil would be a huge chunk of it.

As far as Gibbons and Garcia, they are both solid players who I wouldn't mind having on the Sox, but for Ordonez they better add a little more and maybe even take Valentin or Konerko off the Sox' shoulders.

Ponson is not even with Baltimore anymore, he got traded to the SF Giants last July.

I assume this is the Lopez kid that was talked about in the Mariner deal.

He's the #13 shortstop in the Minors according to BA

13. Jose Lopez, Mariners

Age: 19 Level: Double-A 2002 Ranking: 5

Lopez was a hitting machine in 2002, collecting 169 hits for Class A San Bernardino. If his November 1983 birthdate is accurate, it was an even more impressive season. Despite offseason surgery on right ankle, an injury that cost him the final month of the 2002 season, he hit .304 in the first two months of 2003. He cooled off in Double-A after a hot start and finished with a .258 clip. Assuming that his age is correct, it wasn't a bad year. He ripped 35 doubles and hit 13 home runs. He walked just 27 times, fanning 56. Defensively, he's erratic with a plus arm. He hit .228 after June 1.

And before the 2003 season, he was the number 3 prospect in the Seattle System.

3. Jose Lopez, ss

Age: 19. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-2. Wt.: 170. Signed: Venezuela, 2000. Signed by: Bob Engle/Jose Moreno.

Background: Lopez held his own as the youngest player in the short-season Northwest League in 2001, and his bat took a quantum leap last year in the California League, where he was the second-youngest regular. He led all minor league shortstops in hitting and topped the Cal League in hits and doubles. He was Seattle’s minor league player of the year.

Strengths: Lopez’ defensive abilities have been apparent since he made his pro debut. Managers said he had the best infield arm in the Cal League, and he has fine hands, range and actions at shortstop. He has excellent instincts in all phases of the game, making him an adept hitter and a threat on the bases. He has plenty of pop for a middle infielder.

Weaknesses: Because he excels at making contact, Lopez rarely works deep counts or walks. He’s filling out and may outgrow shortstop, though he’ll still have enough bat for second or third base. Like most teenagers, he could be more consistent on a daily basis.

The Future: Doctors have discovered an extra bone in Lopez’ right foot, which may require surgery. Barring a major setback, he’ll play in Double-A this year at 19.

Defensively he sounds like a young Ozzie. Oh ya he is also from Venezuela. Even though he is young, making an assumption, he probalby would be an eight or ninth place hitter. I am basing this on the numbers from the article

Ponson is not even with Baltimore anymore, he got traded to the SF Giants last July.

Yeah so no deal.

Mercy!

And where do you think Jack would play for the Sox?? I don't think there is much doubt he can hit, but he can't do anything but DH. The Sox already have one of those.

I would like to think we can get more for Maggs than that. He is a really great player - probably a Top 25 player. Gibbons is just another base-clogging bopper (we already have enough of those, don't we?), Cust is "Kevin Maas Part II," and Ainsworth is an "iffy" pitcher at best at this point.

I know we might have to get rid of Maggs because of his contract, and other teams know that as well. However, that doesn't mean that we have to accept a pile of marbles in exchange for an emerald.

GOTTA get more for Maggs than that.

Why do we always give up two or three top-shelf prospects for guys and get scrappers in return?

Jeez. Jon Adkins for Durham. Garbage for Baldwin, More garbage for Howry.

Yet the Sox trade away Rupe, Bittner, Webster and Ring.

Need more than Gibbons and Ainsworth for Maggs. Cust is another slow DH wannabe. Forget it.

As for the young SS, that's a crapshoot. Hell, Mike Caruso was supposed to be the best SS in the Giants' farm system and we know how that worked out. You'd better have awful good scouting if you're projecting 19 year olds.

Seriously....it seems none of these trades have helped the ChiSox in the long term. It'd be nice if that finally changed.

Great point, we always do get the s*** end of the deal in the long run. Is KW the one to blame for this?

Make it Melvin Mora or Jerry Hairston, Kurt Ainsworth, and Jay Gibbons and if you can get Cust, him too.. for Maggs and then your talking.

The key to me is what they use Magglio's money on. If they don't spend it...then its bulls***. If they use it to add pitchers, relievers and someone like Cameron and a middle infielder like Tejada or Castillo, then go for it.

If the Sox get Jack Cust, which they won't, I think Billy Beane would crap his pants and call KW as fast as he could.

I'm a pretty big Jack Cust fan. I'm confident if he gets ab's, he will put up some damn good numbers. He reminds me of a little more talented Erubiel Durazo. But like Rex says, you need a place to play him. Then again, you could just stick him at first if the Sox can unload Konerko which got a lot more likely with the Dbacks getting Sexson.
