Newsday added: "Such a deal would have pitfalls, but in the Yankees' eyes, those pitfalls could be less perilous than a pursuit of free agent Bartolo Colon or Montreal right-hander Javier Vazquez. Colon would cost more money -- he has a three-year, $36-million offer from the White Sox, for whom he pitched last season, and some Yankees officials have concerns about his rotund shape and mental makeup. Vazquez likely would cost Alfonso Soriano in a deal, and he has only one year to go before free agency."

I'd go out on a limb and say bart has a better "mental makup" than wells

After we traded for Colon, I talked to an Indian fan who told me, "Colon may be a tad overweight but his legs are all muscle." Guess they showed him working out on the news one time and he was in pretty good shape.

Colon is in fine shape to pitch. He is a workhorse. I was at the game in early September when he threw a complete game against the twins to take over first place, that was impressive. He gets stronger as the game and season go on.

Let me one of the first to say, Welcome white sox in '04!!!!

:cheers

Welcome!

If you need anti-depressants, I'm sure many of us can advise you on what to take. :D

Colon is a workhorse, no doubt about it. But, he does qualify as a risk healthwise. As much extra weight as he carries could lead to a breakdown somewhere, before the end of a longterm contract.

mental health? He was my #1 pick on the staff last year to pitch a big game. I wouldn't be worried about his mental game and only minor worries about his weight. He's going to chew innings, keep you in most ball games, and be a good club house guy. I'm trying to think of a rotation in MLB that he isn't in the top 3.

My guess is that the concerns about his mental makeup are more about how he is during a full season. There were many Sox fans concerned about his effort on a night in/night out basis.

I too would not have a problem with him in a big game, but I wonder how well he sustains his efforts thoughout the season. There may be something to it, or there may not. Who knows?

Wait until Ncorbgl gets a hold of this thread....
