2004 Bears Draft Grade: B+

 

Tommie Harris

Great pick. Angelos gets who he wanted all along, I didn't think Harris would be there when we picked, but it is who I wanted. Out theme this year was speed, and Harris is no exception. He will be out #1 DT this year after he makes Boone and our current DT's look bad, which they are.

 

Tank Johnson

I endorsed picking 2-DT's in a row. It was by far our weakest position and we made it very your and very fast. Thank runs a great 40 for his size. After only 18 sacks last year it was evident we needed to get to the QB more, and we will. I am pretty sure Haynes/Harris/Tank/Brown makes the fastest DLine in football. Not many people knew about Tank, but after reading a lot about him I think he will be great. No to mention he is named Tank.

 

Bernard Berrian

This guy can flat out run. He was a great reciever at Fresno before he got hurt. He says he is 100% better and if he is watch out. This guy can be a playmaker. The Bears have never really had a great deep threat and I think this guy can be one. After losing Dez White, which was a good thing, the Bears needed another reciever.

 

Nathan Vasher

Two words: hell yes. I really really really wanted this guy in the 3rd, but no we get him in the 4th!!! I was so happy when we got him at 110. This guy was a great corner in a great conference. His numbers were down his senior year, but that's because teams with throw away from him. They can't do that if he lines up with Peanut Tillman. He was also one of the better punt returners in the nation, so I think RW may be out of a job if he doesn't restructure.

 

Leon Joe

A lot of people feel he was a reach in the 4th round, and he may have been, but that doesn't mean he can't be a good player. As I mentiond earlier, this years theme was speed. Joe is extremely fast, and I think he may be starting OLB before the season is over. This fills a hold, because I personally don't think Joe Odom will cut it. I may be totally wrong on this guy, but I believe he can be a good player.

 

Claude Harriott

While it is still way to early to write off Haynes, and Alex Brown has been solid, you can't have too many pass rushers. This guy is very quick. While at Pitt he collected 13.5 sacks, and 35 tackles for losses. Do I expect him to come in and make a huge impact as a rookie? No. Do I think he was a good experimental pick, who could potenially be a 5th round steal? Yes.

 

Craig Krenzel

This is the only pick in this draft that really had me baffled. I doubt Krenzel would have been drafted, let alone in the 5th round! I have no problem with him being on the team, but as a 5th round pick? I am not so sure. Sure he is a smart guy, who knows how to win, but there were so many more guys with better arms. But hey, not every pick is gonna be great, and maybe this guy can suprise a lot of people. No one thought Tom Brady would be anything coming out of Michigan.

 

Alfonso Marshall

Even thought Vasher was already picked in the 4th round, CB is another need of the Bears. He could be a good special teams coverage man. Pretty solid pick for the 7th round.

Drafting Tank, which could end up being a good move, seems to be an admission by Angelo that we were so weak at the DT position that he needed to burn his first two picks on a position that he was trading away the starter from just weeks before the bears first game last season..

So your saying that Ted Washington fits this new system? Yes, we are weak at the position, but whether or not we traded away Ted Washington makes no difference to this. He was a FA and we would have lost him anyway. Horrible reason to give the Bears a C for the entire draft.

 

I give them an A. Getting a WR with that kind of potential in the 3rd round is great. Then trading down and getting Vasher in the 4th? WOW!

 

Another reason I give them an A is because they actually had a plan and followed through with it. They wanted to add speed and boy did they ever. I can't wait to see this team in Bourbonais. Great draft by the coaching staff and Angelo. I think they really worked as a team with this. We actually looked like a real organization. Awesome!

Went with a B, would of been a high B if they picked Josh Harris.

I gave it a B. Like WillieH1, the only pick that baffled me was that of Krezel, because that's a reach there. Other then that, I'm very happy with all the picks.

 

So, not counting Harris, who do you guys think will have the biggest impact on this team? I'll say Vasher and Berrian.

So my big beef is still with the team that was put on the field last season -- I don't know why everyone has such faith in Angelo when he tanked a draft in 2002, and sold off a key component to the defense in 2003 -- Last time i checked the guy doesn't walk on water.

 

I may be wrong about the the Tank pick, You're right that washington would have walked this season -- so they likely would have needed to draft a couple DT's anyways -- but if Angelo actually had a plan last year, he would have gotten one who would have been ready this season(if he planned on keepingTW) or he would have drafted one who would have been ready to step up this season, in last years draft -- He didn't and just sold off Washington to the quickest bidder.

I hardly think Angelo sabotaged the coaching staff last year as he drafted very well last year as well. He may have traded Washington, but I think the coaching staff agreed with him on that trade because they all felt Washington was on his last legs so they may as well get something for him. They had serious concerns on whether or not he could even play last year on his creeking knees. He drafted a DE, Michael Haynes, which the Bears were also in desperate need of. How did Angelo deliberately sabotage the coaching staff again? What trades? The Bears receiving corp is not a problem? We didn't have a speed guy. That was a problem. With our 3rd round pick we now have one. LB- Urlacher, Briggs, Odom, Knight. I doubt Odom starts the whole season. I think Joe takes over for him.

 

I think we are all behind Angelo because of how he drafted last year and how it seems like he actually has a plan. Unlike former years with Hatley and others who seemed to be drafting all over the place and not taking on specific angle. That seems to be changing around here.

 

Don't you think the Bears coaching staff hurt themselves by not starting the rookies earlier last year? We barely saw Michael Haynes. Grossman should have started earlier as Krodell and Chandler were awful. Peanut Tillman should have started much sooner. Azumah should have been our kick returner for a while now. Briggs didn't start as soon as he should have. Justin Gage was great when he played. The cocahing staff hurt themselves by not wanting to play young guys and by not being able to evaluate talent better or sooner. the coaching staff hurt themselves, not Angelo.

I think the Bears will regret taking Krenzel over Smoker.

 

 

As long as he stays off the hard stuff he will be a quality QB I think.

 

I can see him unseating Bulger by next season.
