aboz56 Posted May 3, 2004 Share Posted May 3, 2004 This is from today's Sun Times: Pitching questions are forming for the White Sox with the demotion of fifth starter Dan Wright to Class AAA Charlotte, but manager Ozzie Guillen isn't jumping the gun for answers. For the time being, off days will allow the team to use a four-man rotation. Left-hander Mark Buehrle, who pitched Saturday, will go on short rest to start Wednesday in Baltimore, but will get the extra day back before his following start, Guillen said. As for the rest of the rotation, Guillen is sure of only one thing -- when it comes time to reinstate the five-man rotation, rookie Neal Cotts won't be in it. ''[People] think I'll make Cotts a starter. He's not,'' Guillen said. ''I'm not going to fix something that's not broken. I'm going to build him to be a starter [in the future], but I won't go from someone who's doing a tremendous job and take him backward. He's a big piece of the [bullpen] puzzle. ''I think this kid could be a starter in the future, but right now he's doing a great job for us.'' If Wright isn't back, the options could be in Class AAA. The best performer at Charlotte currently is right-hander Felix Diaz, a 23-year-old Dominican native who came to the Sox as part of the July 2002 trade that sent Kenny Lofton to the San Francisco Giants. Diaz is 4-0 with a 2.01 ERA in five starts. He has 29 strikeouts in 31-1/3 innings. ''He's throwing the ball real good now,'' Guillen said. Jon Rauch, who has spent parts of the last two seasons with the Sox, is 3-2 with a 3.77 ERA in five starts, while right-hander Ryan Kohlmeyer, 26, is 1-1 with a 2.28 ERA in four starts and right-hander Jason Grilli is 1-2 with a 3.80 ERA in four starts. I wouldn't mind seeing Diaz get his shot, but I am a bit disturbed that an option wouldn't be to bring Cotts to the rotation and put Wunsch back in the pen...There must be a reason that this isn't being considered...No confidence in Kelly? He has rebounded quite well I think, but it will at least be interesting speculation for the next 2-3 weeks on who gets the call to be the 5th starter. When he WAS healthy -- in ST and to start off the year , he was UNTOUCHABLE -- something like 5 hits in 15 innings, only 1 extra-base hit and 20 Ks from March through mid-April. His salary is nothing. He could help out Shingo deal with LH'ers. And he is a well-known personality in the clubhouse. If/when he is healthy, why on earth would we want to run him out of town? One of the only reasons I can think of is that he does not last long. He was in something like 60-65 games last year and it seems to be that he pitched in 45-50 innings or so. Averaging less then an inning per is not efficient. I like Kelly a hell of a lot, and I would like to keep him and use him out of the pen(hell, I'd rather have him closing then Koch), but if we can get a solid player for him, I suppose Kenny can make a move. I don't see why, but then again, with Cotts's success as a reliever, I don't see why not. Atleast it's one of those good problems to have. From Rotoworld: Jason Grilli allowed six runs -- four earned -- in 4 2/3 innings for Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday. Grilli's poor performance probably hurt his chances of joining the White Sox as a fifth starter later this month. Both Felix Diaz and Jon Rauch are pitching better.
