You are absolutely right. Ron Schueler brainwashed everyone , including Baseball America, into believing the farm system was full of future stars. The only place most of these will ever star in in softball beer leagues.

They have produced a lot of good players. Maggs, Carlos, Frank, Crede, Rowand, and Buehrle, all were drafted, signed and brought through our system. Garland, Harris, Cotts, Olivo, and Diaz all were traded to the Sox but spent significant time in our minors before making the big team. There are plenty of guys who came out of the Sox system and are on other big league clubs such as Kip Wells, Josh Fogg, etc. The Sox produce their fair share of major leaguers.

I think the problem is that those hyped the most don't amont to much and don't live up to expectations, but you get most of your stars aren't hyped through the minors, but get a chance in the majors and do well.

Good (if labrum-challenged) farm system if you ask me. If Sox had Top 3 picks like the Cubs, you'd see more Kerry Woods and Mark Priors, I am sure.

You have to take into consideration that the Sox have not had a top 10 pick in the draft in 12 or 13 years. I'm not sure of the exact number of years but it has been a while.

I was just looking at all of there first round picks in the last 15 years and hardly any of them have sniffed the major leagues. Pretty sad imo.

My point was when Schueler was here and the farm system was ranked #1 by BA, we kept on being told about all the pitching in the minors. Everyone threw 95 mph. Barcelo, injury plagued, Rauch, hyped as the next Randy Johnson, hurt, and now the organization won't give him a chance, even if he performs well. Garland was supposedly the next Kevin Brown. He is only 24, but his development has been painfully slow. Kip Wells was supposedly a David Cone clone. He may be, but KW had to unload him for a Jaime Navarro clone. Wright, West, Stumm, Ginter, the list goes on and on. Schueler never mentioned Buerhle, and he has had the most success by far. They tried their best to lose Magglio, exposing him in the rule 5 draft, so obviously they didn't consider him much of a prospect. They liked Jeff Abbott a lot more, the same Jeff Abbott who may be asking you if you'd like fries with that at McDonald's. The Baseball America ranking a few years ago was way off. Schueler really didn't have much before the group you mentioned. Wells-gone, Fogg-gone, Maggs-they lucked into his success, Crede-inconsistent, Lee-inconsistent, Baldwin-the highest career ERA for a pitcher who has pitched as many innings as he has in the history of MLB. For a guy who was supposedly a scouting genius, it doesn't say much about Schueler's 10 years at the helm.

Why would we do something that stupid? We would instantly make it harder for our GM to make deals. Besides everyone is the next coming of someone. That is the nature of the beast. Are we the only team who does this? Not even close. Go back and look at all of the Yankee can't miss prospects, and the Dodgers can't miss prospects, and so on. There aren't many Montreal's out there who consistantly hit on these guys.

There was a two-year stretch when the Sox took a ton of pitchers -- Ginter, Parque, Purvis, Stumm, Wright, Buehrle, Rauch, Majewski, Wells, Fogg and probably others I am forgetting.

 

We gave up on Wells too soon and got nothing for him.

 

Parque was rushed and then was injured.

 

Purvis, Stumm, Wright and Rauch have all had major arm problems.

 

Fogg is fading fast.

 

Ginter is more potential than production.

 

Majewski is a fringe prospect the Sox have given up on a couple of times, but he keeps coming back.

 

Buehrle is all they have to really show for all those picks.

 

Part of it is simply baseball. There's nothing harder than developing quality big-league pitchers. Part of it is too much unnecessary hype.

If you have 25 guys in the big leagues playing for any team you are successful. There was a report a couple of years back that had the Dodgers having 38 guys playing in the majors that they drafted or signed as a free agent (not eligible for teh draft.) The Sox had like 21. It was a very interesting story as you got to see where guys came from. For example, Frank Mennachino (sp?) was originally draffted by the Sox.

Who else is really hoping that this Baj guy turns out to be god? If he is as good as he is in the minors, then i will be smiling forever. He's my new favorite minor leaguer.
