The good news is that Phish is breaking up. The BAD news is that now there will be 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 new awful Phish-based bands, depending on how many members were in Phish. Whether you like the band or not I can't imagine someone listening to a 3 hour live show and not be awed by their talent....not lyrics, but talent. Here's why: Because, regardless of how much technical talent they possess, if you don't like the product of that talent, you're never going to sit through it long enough to appreciate the skill level, nor will you care. I think of it this way--Charlie Trotter, Emeril, Wolfgang Puck and Rick Bayless could put their heads together for years and try and come up with the best way to cook broccoli, but no matter how good of chefs they are, I won't like whatever they come up with, because I can't stand broccoli.
