striker
I believe he is in his last year of his contract with a team option for next year. Player Contract Info
redandwhite
I never liked the idea of paying a closer 11-12 million, I'd rather go with someone else.
witesoxfan
I never liked the idea of paying a closer 11-12 million, I'd rather go with someone else. Difference is, we aren't paying him that much. We would pay him $5 mill tops, and in all likelyhood, less then that. It what we'd have to give up in prospects that I wouldn't like. They'd ask for a lot. Regardless, the Braves aren't quite out of it yet. They get another starter, and they got a shot. I still think the Marlins will win their first division crown, but the Braves are not out of it yet. BobDylan
Get Smoltz as a rent, a legit 5th starter and you're s***ting me. Our team would be one tough cookie in the playoffs. But I don't see Smoltz signing anywhere but in Atlanta.
SoxFan562004
I'm also guessing Smoltz has a no trade, either in contract or via 5/10 rule. So if he was ever to accept a trade I'm sure he would demand the team picking him up would have to guarantee the option
SuperSteve
Nope, not realistic. The Braves are still in the race, plus he is expensive. Also said he'd like to go back to starting. So if he'd waive his no trade clause (I am sure he is atleast a 10/5 player), he'd probably request to be a starter. He does have a ring too, so its not like he's going to do anything to get another one. EDIT: I didn't realize it was said as him coming here next year. I still say no. CWSOX45
Even though Smoltz isn't an option I still think there are a couple of guys we could get out there. One in my mind is Ugueth Urbina with Detroit, at the trading deadline I'm sure we could get him for two minor leaguers if not one. I don't buy that trading in the division bulls*** either, we need a closer he'd probably come cheaply. Or there is always Jose Mesa, even though he choked in the 97 series with Cleveland. Here's another question, is Byun-Hun Kim still in the minors? If he is he obviously could be obtained for little value. He could be a starter or help solidify our pen. (Kim is in the minors right?) Just some ideas. CWSOX45 P.S. Forgot to mention we NEED to go after Steve Finley. He'd be a perfect fit for the Sox.

Yeah he is still in the minors, I heard he has lost some velocity though that is why he was sent down to work on regaining it.

kapkomet
Pass the crackpipe, I need some. Smoltzie is not coming to Chitown, unless it's to the evil empire.
Xero
If we can't even afford to give Magglio 5mil more than why would we get a 10mil closer?
YASNY
Smoltz - I just can't see this happening. Urbina - He of the Koch-like numbers? What's the point? Mesa - He of the Koch-like choke syndrome? What's the point? Kim - He of the Koch-like lost velocity? What's the point?
Jordan4life_2007
It won't happen. But, good lord. Could you imagine having Shingo, Marte, and Smoltz pitch the 7th, 8th and 9th? Ok, Let me stop dreaming now. Damn you, Striker
