Jung Bong

We've all seen the Sox's struggles at the 5th Starter position this year. As it happens, the Cincinnati Reds have also had this problem, but it appears to be solved for now due to the way that the Reds handled the situation.

On June 8th, Jung Bong had his 1st ever MLB start. He gave up 4 Earned Runs in 3 1/3rd innings. Now, if Reds mgmt did things the way that Sox mgmt does, Bong would have been sent right down to the minors. However, they stuck with him and in his next 2 starts, Bong has gone 1-0 with his latest start a 3-hit 6 inning shutout against St. Louis on June 20th.

What this shows is that the way for the Sox to fix the 5th starter problem is to be patient with whoever they put in that slot for at least 3-4 starts. Not this nonsense of having it that if they don't win right away, they get sent back down.

If the sox fifth starter gave up 4 earned runs in 3 1/3rd innings it would be an improvement. ;)

LOL, good point there qwerty.

I seem to recall when Danny Wright was getting lit up, there wasn't much patience displayed around here.

Which was an unfair judgement considering his injuries now. ;)

wasn't that Rauch's last outing?

I think we should have stuck with Diaz for longer. We couldn't stick with Rauch for longer because the 5th starter spot wasn't coming up. If we can just LEAVE Rauch in the 5th spot until we make a trade, that would work just fine. Just leave him there.

I would not care at all for Jung Bung, but I would stick to Diaz, and Rauch for now...

haha  ... it's sad, but true

I don't think that he meant we should get Bong, but rather that we should handle our young guys the same way that the Reds did with Bong.

Nice f***ing research rector.

We are treating guys just like Bong. His first career start was in Atlanta in 2002. He never saw action again in 2002. Was used exclusively out of the pen in 2003. Then was traded to another team in 2004.

I do like that they brought Rauch up a few days before the start. Let him get comfortable, instead of being dropped here from Mars. Let him know he's getting three starts before looking to hook em.

Hell we're 0-8 from that spot. The only thing we haven't tried is leaving a healthy guy in there for a while.

That or having a fan promotion "Be the Fifth Starter for a Night!"

Or come in and try to pitch an inning and see how much you get shelled. See if you can beat 11 runs in 2 innings. Sheesh

The sad thing is that people were actually excited to see munoz pitch. :puke

Hell I was excited to see him and he just wasn't ready. I don't blame Munoz at all. I think most of the blame lies on KW for not being able to take care of this problem b4 it even became a problem in the off season.

What i can never understand is why do teams bring up starters from double- a. Did they forget that little thing called triple-a.

I thought that one guy was a fan

It is scary how poorly everyone has done from that spot.

Dontrelle Willis

If Rauch or Diaz pitches instead of Munoz... we probably win that second MTL game, get the monkey off our back, and nobody is ready to push the panic button.

It's funny how 1 game can make a huge difference on the spin on a club.

Dontrelle Willis

How often does someone like him come up from double-a. Didn't he actually start the very beginning of the season at single-a???

No doubt that either one of those to would have won that game. The most i can see them giving up would have been 5-6 which would still be bad, but not horrible like munoz was.

Right on. Plus, Munoz struggled whenever he went to Triple-A. That's something Willis didn't do (I think).

Yeah i don't think willis was ever at triple-a. ;)

That's the difference between an established player who makes $X+ and an unproven commodity that makes $X--
