Brandon McCarthy Promoted to Winston Salem

Brandon McCarthy, 20, will join the Sox best prospects in Winston Salem following todays South Atlantic League All Star game. McCarthy is expected to travel with the Warthogs to Virginia and will make his first start on July 4th at home against the Kingston Indians. The Indians were the best team in the Carolina league in the first half of the season. However, they are off to an 0-4 start this year.

McCarthy has moved from being a sleeper prospect to a hot prospect. His final four starts in Kannapolis were fantastic. He went 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA. He compiled a whopping 36 strikeouts compared to just two walks over that span while giving up 17 hits. On the season McCarthy was 7-5 with a 3.78 ERA in 14 starts. He struck out 103 batters in 88 innings of work, walked 21, and gave up just 73 hits.

McCarthy will team up with Sean Tracey to form a pretty formidable 1-2 punch in Winston Salem. Tracey has been the Warthogs ace all season, and one of their lone bright spots in the rotation. He is 4-6 with a 2.80 ERA in 14 starts. He has given up just 56 hits in 70.2 innings of work, but has struggled with control at times (38 walks).

With McCarthy, Anderson, Sweeney, Lumsden, and Fields the Warthogs have the most major league upside of any minor league team in the Sox organization. However, it has yet to be seen whether all this potential will result in wins, something the Hogs didn't do enough of in the first half of the season.

Great news and good write up Jas.

I didn't put it in the piece, but I just want to say congrats to Bmac. He's been pitching fantastic for the Intimidators and he definately deserved this callup.

Gracious :D

HELL YA BRANDON!!!! :headbang

Probably the most deserved promotion in the Sox system.

His final four starts in Kannapolis were fantastic. He went 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA. He compiled a whopping 36 strikeouts compared to just two walks over that span while giving up 17 hits.

Gee I wonder where you got those stats?

Congrats to BMac for dominating the SAL and getting called up! Keep it up! :headbang

We'll see if we can coax a little interview out of him during our roadtrip ;)

BMAC is a great guy, and very nice to answer my questions when I have talked to him. Ask him in advance and I have no doubt he will hook you up.

Congrats Brandon! :cheers :cheers

Long overdue, let's hope BMAC continues to pitch well in Winstom Salem where they really need it! :cheers

Congrats to B-mac! :cheers I have a feeling that his #'s aren't gonna drop much in W-S, and he'll really help them to win the 2nd half.

Congrats, BMac, this was more than deserved

If he does well, Kenny will trade him.
