Tough one to answer because I think Rooney is OK but Ed Farmer is the worst announcer in the history of radio.  He sounds completely bored except when he is talking about something other than baseball - which is alot.

I don't want to hear about Farmer's religious beliefs or who his friends are or who he scouted 15 years ago.  How about getting excited about a basehit or double play?

Two words:

Ron.

Santo.

As long as Santo gasps for air on a radio station, Farmer can be no closer than 2nd place.

Mark Grace is giving Santo and Farmer a run for their money, though - he sounds like the Bears radio people during the Dan Hampton/Hub Arkush era. Yelling, laughing, everything but analysis. A lot like Santo, actually...

Farmer talks about other s*** too much

Worst of all of the teams

Ron Santo

Chip Carey

Chris Berman

Tim McCarver

Joe Carter

and more

I voted no but it's not really the announcers I hate more as it is the formats of the broadcast.

Sometimes i'll be out somewhere and I want to know what the sox are doing. I'll go to the car and try to get a score and it just seems to take forever.

Also I don't really like how they always seem to have to throw out ad's at the weirdest times. I know it's Radio and they have to make their money somehow but it could wait until the commercials I think. rolleyeyes.gif

they are way to random

That's his job, ESPN sometimes promotes the Ed and John talk show. His goofy stories about golf and attend-dance are all part of the plan.

Ed brings a subtle passion to the broadcast. After Bobby Crosby's HR in Oakland he was saying "I don't know why we have scouting reports". He quoted the report and demonstrated that Loaiza's pitch was exactly what the scouts said NOT to do. But he wasn't standing on his chair screaming so people don't pick up on it.

They are not perfect, I voted that I like them, not love. My particular pet peeve is Farmer not calling pitches when they interview a guest. First because unless it's a ball player there shouldn't be any guests on a baseball broadcast, second there is no reason he can't work the interview around the pitches, Rooney does it.

As an out of towner, I listen to them on the internet every day. I also listen to a lot of other games while I'm at work and I think they're probably the best announcers out there. Very insightful, always on top of the game and they don't say stupid crap that no one cares about...

oh man...how could anyone not like them....maybe they take a little time to say the score...but if they said it every 2 minutes someone would b**** about that too.....they are GREAT announcers

Rooney and Farmer are great announcers; I just wish they would stop with the bad puns! Their "jokes" are so not funny!

A couple seasons ago, Farmer made no secret about the fact that he enjoys when the Cubs do poorly.

Sox management must have talked to him about that, because he doesn't "Cub-bash" anymore. (But...I DO!!! :fthecubs )

Never listened to them before.

You guys are 16 hours ahead of Chicago right? So a 7pm game in Chicago ends up being about noon where you are, right?

That's 10 a.m our time, usually I'm out at Uni at that time of the morning though. On the West Coast, games usually don't start til bout 1 p.m.

I love John and Ed. John paints a good picture when he's doing lay-by-play. He tells you when "A new supply of baseball" goes out to the home plate umpire and little things like that. Those kinds of things help me "see" the game better.

Rooney: "They're doing the wave out here in Oakland"

Farmer: "They love the wave down here"

Farmer: Tomorrow they're celebrating the 30th annviersary of the 1974 World Series title. So I guess if they do they wave tomorrow it will be a "title" wave John.

They get the job done for me. But like others have mentioned, saying the score more frequently would help. When i get in the car, i want to know what the score is right away. I realize they don't know when i'm getting in the car...but they should realize people are doing this type of thing all over the place and say the score outside of going to/coming from commercial.
