History Lesson

As a new member to the site I can appreciate the optimism of many posters. However, I think we need to take a little time to stop making cute images of Sox players on the computer and start watching whats happening to this club. How about a little history lesson from a die hard fan who has had his guts ripped out by this club for over 20 years (including the awesome playoff run of 2000...swept in the same dead ass fashion as we have showed vs the Twins when it counts.)

Who has won the division the last three years with what are supposedly less talented players?? Who has won the big game head to head down the stretch when it counts?? Who took the division at our place last September?? Say what you will but every year we look like world beaters on paper, but when it comes down to the wire we burn like the very paper the supposedly vaunted line-up is printed on. The fact is that when it counts the Twins flat out get it done.

I love this team, in fact took off a bit early from work yesterday and Monday to attend the games and cheer on the club. And what happend? In front of two sell out crowds we fall flat on our asses. I was at the games last September as well...and I am sick of watching this team not show up in big games. Mags and Frank are out...too bad. Hey, we came back vs the Tigers last week...big f-ing deal, they suck. There are no asterisks in the standings, no what-if points, just wins and losses.

The bottom line is that the team as it is presently constituted can not win. They cannot win the big game, they cannot get the big hit, and they cannot win in the playoffs. I know there are 64 games left vs a weak schedule and the Twins play a tougher one, but they come to the Cell again in September and I see nothing from this ballclub that convinces me the outcome will be any different than last year. I have no desire to see this team slip into the playoffs only to get swept while scoring a total of 4 runs in three games. The goal is to "win the whole f-ing thing" to quote Lou Brown, and if you think this team can do that you have been staring at the monitor in your parents basement for too long.

It is my sincere hope that we do make a run sometime in the future, make a run with a club that has some heart and the horses to give this city and this teams fans what they deserve...a champion.

history:

between 1983-2002, 20 seasons, the Sox won 4 division titles.

the other 20 year span we won 4 of anything: 1901-1920.

They went from 1920-1958 without winning anything.

This is the one of the best eras in Sox history. Yes, these are among the best years ever.

When we want to think about how miserable we are, when the game sucks, thank God we go to games with our friends and still have that joyful experience!

I am neither optimistic nor pessimistic. It will be what it will be. Frank and Mags are out. We are in 2nd, 2.5 back, in July 28. What happens next will unfold and regardless of how it turns out, we will still have the Sox and each other. :headbang

Long season, teams go in cycles, etc etc etc

I think they'll be OK, which is NOT to say that this team is without its problems.

I'd like to see the same things addressed that we all would ( leadoff guy, some bullpen help, LH bench bat, and so on ) but I still have optimism with this team.

It's just disappointing that the Sox couldn't give the BIG crowds more to cheer about.

Well, if the Twins want anymore confidence coming in and taking 2 of 3 or possibly sweeping the Sox could do it. ANd they ahd two games that they should of/could of won.

They had opportunities against Radke early and today have just freaking handed this game over.

Your right, the Twins are the best team in the division and will be until the Sox prove otherwise. This team needs to grow up, the vets gotta put the team on their shoulders, help out the youngsters, and everyone needs to start executing.

Well, just got swept at our place by the Twins when it counts. Last one out of the Cell turn out the lights. They embarassed themselves in front of over 100,000 fans this week. The equivilant of pissing your pants in public. They are done.

I can't wait to hear the Polly Anna-ish replies from all of the posters in their parent basements. "Were not out of it yet..."

Nice post.

It's nice to hear somebody who wants the Sox to win really bad but knows the situation they're in right now. Don't let some of the posters here get you down. It's OK to have an opinion that makes sense and is accurate and not just wishful thinking without any sense of reality.

And when you get one, let us know.

To say the Sox "cannot win" is Bulls***. They didn't win in this series. They'll get them the next time. The Twins were reeling the last time we left Minnesota and we are reeling now. It happens.

I'm not a guy that views the world through silver and black glasses. I've seen my share of heartbreaks and disappointments over my 40+ years of being a Sox fan. But one thing I never do is give up hope. When we are 5 back with 5 to play, we still have a chance of winning. Stranger things have happened in baseball. Ask the '64 Phillies, '69 Cubs and '78 Red Sox.

But to come in here, saying we are dead and have no chance .... 3.5 games back .... in f***ing July .... does not constitute being a fan in my opinion.
