August 3, 200421 yr minorleaguebaseball.com's Daily Dugout Chatter: McCARTHY STRIKES OUT 16 PELICANS Winston Salem Warthogs' starter, Brandon McCarthy, won his fourth straight start as the Warthogs blanked the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, 2-0. McCarthy gave up just two hits in seven innings, and struck out a career high 16. It was McCarthy's 12th double figure strike out game of his career. Dwayne Pollok broke the Winston-Salem franchise record with his 27th save. Pelicans starter, Efigenio Peralta, suffered his second loss. The Warthogs scored single runs in the first, third, and sixth innings. Peralta walked three in the first and gave up an RBI single to Josh Fields. Ryan Sweeney had an RBI singled in the third, while Chris Amador hit a solo home run, his second, in the sixth. Fields finished with two hits for the Warthogs. Wesley Timmons had two doubles for Myrtle Beach. YOFU SAYS: NO HITS FOR YOU Charlotte pitcher Tetsu Yofu threw a no-hitter as he dominated the Durham Bulls and led Charlotte Knights to a 5-0 victory in International League action Sunday afternoon. Yofu struck out 10 batters and walked only two. Yofu was in some trouble in the first inning when Brooks Badeaux reached first base on an error by Charlotte first basemen Mike Bell. Two batters later Yofu walked Midre Cummings before getting Jonny Gomes to pop up. Bell atoned for his error by going 4-for-4 with a home run. Bryant Nelson went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI. Ryan Hawkins also had two hits and an RBI for Charlotte. Jim Magrane took the loss (6-4) giving up five earned runs in five innings pitched. The victory improves Charlotte's record to 54-56, currently 6 1/2 games behind Durham in the International League's Southern Division.
