Rockets Close To Acquiring Mutumbo

HOUSTON -- The Houston Rockets are close to a deal that would add veteran center Dikembe Mutombo as the backup to Yao Ming, a television station reported Thursday.

The Rockets would send Eric Piatkowski, Adrian Griffin and Mike Wilks to the Chicago Bulls, Houston television station KRIV said in a report citing anonymous NBA sources.

The deal, which could be done as early as next week, needs the approval of Bulls ownership and the NBA, the station said.

Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson declined comment.

Wilks, a free agent, would have to sign with the Rockets first.

"I have considered this deal to be imminent for about a month," his agent, Bill Neff, said. "In the last week, Carroll Dawson asked me not to sign Mike Wilks with someone else. If it was anybody but Carroll Dawson, I would probably ignore them. Mike Wilks will not be an issue."

Mutombo, an eight-time All-Star and four-time defensive player of the year, has averaged 12.2 points, 12.1 rebounds and 3.33 blocked shots in 13 years with New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Denver. He is fourth in NBA history with 2,996 blocks.

He played in 65 games with the Knicks last season, averaging 6.7 rebounds and 5.6 points, before being traded to the Bulls.

Good, get that load of garbage out of town.

just what the bulls need 3 more jobber guys to dump 1 big jobber guy

I like Eric P. so I wouldn't mind this deal at all. ;)

I don't have a clue, but I'm guessing a nobody.

Ditto.

that is what i am afraid of. i wish the bulls coulda gotten a draft pick out of this.

This is a good move for the Rockets in terms of team chemistry. Now you'll have both Patrick Ewing and Dikembe Mutombo, 2/3 of the Georgetown posse, working with Yao Ming. The only thing left to do is to go after Alonzo Mourning (the other 1/3 of the Georgetown posse), and then go to work. I'd love to be a player in that locker room. I just wouldn't talk to Juwan Howard, that's all. ;)

At least Mutumbo could somewhat play defense. I'm nat saying he was good but I'd rather have him than those 3.

I'm sure Drew Gooden wouldn't either.

Mt. Mutumbo has OK'd the trade so it looks like it will happen

It was never up to him.

His agent asked that the Bulls try to move him, the Bulls have been trying to get the Rockets to kick in some cash for the trade.

Im looking forward to going to some Rockets games this year.... They are gonna be good with T Mac and Yao.. Plus Mutombo will add good depth..

I like the move, for the Rockets that is :P

Bulls now have 19 players on the roster :huh
