Why Would a FA sign with the Sox

Featured Replies

I was just being on the low side. Imo no chance in hell we even get close to signing him. And if we were to go after him why not try to  go after two pitchers such as perez and radke or some sort of combination like that.

Because Pedro is a true bonafide ace who has the respect of every player in the MLB and has pitched in some very big games and will win you a lot of games.

I think though, what I'd almost rather see happen is to see the Sox get some very, very good relievers. You can have all the stud starters you want, but those starters will not always go 7 innings, and you will have to rely on your pen some, and if it isn't very good, you will get beaten late a lot.

However, if they can get Pedro for 3-years, $45-50 mill or so, I say do it in a heartbeat. Pedro-Garcia-Buehrle-Contreras-Garland/Diaz is real damn tough.

You saying you would take pedro over say clement and perez? Or perez and radke, radke clement. I am not saying it will ever happen just hypothetically.

$12 mill would be stolen.

I would almost count on the Yankees offering him ATLEAST $15 mill a year, and possibly more.  They need pitching worse then us, and that says something.

The Yanks will definitely make an offer, especially if they void Kevin Brown's contract, but that probably won't happen now. The Giants will make a big push for him too because Pedro is real good friends with Felipe Alou back from their Montreal days I believe.

Personally I wouldn't shelve out $12 million for Pedro. I'd rather sign Odalis Perez for around $7 to $8 million, and spend the rest of the money we'd save on Pedro towards a closer like Benitez, an outfielder like Frank Catalanotto or an infielder like Omar Vizquel or Corey Koskie.

Basically how i feel. Can fill a hole or two with 4-6 million dollars not spent on pedro if we got perez or radke.

the latin connection aside, the bottom line for any fa coming here is b/c of the money.

if there isn't any other improvement made, will the lineup we will put other there be as enticing as lets say this yr, before the injuries.

Pedro will get more money than he's worth, at least $12+ mill a yr [He's lost some of his heat, and health has always been an issue] If the sox could get an Odalis Perez or Matt Clement at $8 mill a yr, guys with a proven record of staying healthy and pitching well, they could use the rest to shore up the bullpen or other holes.

Teams like Ana and NYY will go for Pedro, who can throw all the money in the world around. The sox can't and shouldn't.

I would much rather go for a starter with a little lesser talent that is 2-4 million dollars less per year.  But is capable of putting up excellent numbers. Because we could then you that additional money else where.

Isn't that what we've been doing? That really hasn't worked so well, has it?

Why does anyone change companies?

More money

Better opportunity

Better working conditions

Benefits

Boss

Location

Spouse

Kids

There is no difference between a baseball player and a welder or a teacher.

Who determines what a person is "worth"? I believe it is the company paying the money.

taking all what you said into consideration, on that list you compiled, money is the only factor.

so it goes to if kw with jr permission will break the bank and get some of the fa's that is out there.

For most people, they will take money and hope it overcomes the rest. Again not much different then the middle manager for a manufacturing firm. One other factor I forgot was job security.

If we pay more than any other team, they will come.

We will not, so they won't.

That pretty much sums it up.

I want to say the Sox have raised their payroll the last three years, and are going to have a decent amount of free money, and the new TV contract should mean more $$$$, so simply a free agent will come here because the Sox will over more $$$ than another team (Who thought that the Tigers would have gotten free agents, but they gave them the money)
