September 21, 200421 yr With Baines probably leaving as bench coach, the Sox will have an opening on the coaching staff. Since they are going to move towards a speed and defense type of game ....... Tim Raines. There would be someone that could teach Willie Harris how to steal and also teach the National League style to the rest of the guys. Another ex Sox and former teammate of Ozzie's. I don't know if he'd be a good bench coach, but Ozzie could move some guys around within the staff.

I remember hearing Rock say that he was coaching a minor league team in the Expos system when we were in Montreal during that slugfest game.
September 21, 200421 yr I think I read this morning he was coaching with Montreal. I don't really care who the bench coach is, it doesn't matter.

Joey Cora was a pretty decent basestealer, I don't know why he couldn't rub something off on Willie. I definately don't want another Newbie as bench coach. Please give us someone who knows what's going on.

September 21, 200421 yr YAS, what makes you think Harold is leaving...??? Not saying he will, but he wasn't too thrilled with accepting the position in the first place. If we had a replacement, I presume he wouldn't care one way or another. That's an assumption though, maybe he had more fun than expected this season.

September 21, 200421 yr he did have to get the "ok" from his family, which you don't often see in professional sports.
September 21, 200421 yr This is the basis for the Baines stories http://www.dailyherald.com/search/main_sto...?intID=38246141
September 21, 200421 yr "There's really nothing hard about it,'' he said. "You do a little bit before the game and then you just watch the game, unless a situation comes up where you need to give advice or look up stats on a certain hitter or something like that.

September 21, 200421 yr Could we make him a hitting coach? Baines was obviously a smart player; I think he's got to be a pretty valuable asset as a coach.
September 21, 200421 yr You wanna know who I would like to be a hitting coach for the sox??? Big Frank, nobody can touch his OBP except maybe Bonds. He can work the count better than anyone. I would like to see him step up and have more responsibiliy on the team. As far as bunting etc, Santana can take care of that

I would like to see him step up and have more responsibiliy on the team. As far as bunting etc, Santana can take care of that His style is unique to him, and he couldn't teach these guys a lick. Thomas would not be a good coach. He will probably be the kind of guy that retires, disappears for a few years, is elected into the hall of fame, gives his speech, and then disappears again.
September 21, 200421 yr What makes you think he wasn't thrilled with the job..?? There was an article in one of the papers last week quoting Harold. I forget which one, but he said he really didn't like the travel or the job all that much. He alluded to wanting to stay in some sort of coaching/instructional role, but sounded very down on the bench coach job. He didn't come out and say he wouldn't be in that role in 2005, but it was definitely an article where he said he wasn't thrilled with all the down time being a bench coach. Edit: sorry Mike I didn't see your post. It was the Daily Herald article.
September 22, 200421 yr I think I read this morning he was coaching with Montreal. I don't really care who the bench coach is, it doesn't matter. Bench coaches don't matter? Tell that to everyone who respects joe nossek so much.
September 22, 200421 yr Bench coaches don't matter? Tell that to everyone who respects joe nossek so much. Joe Nossek was the best in the league, a good bench coach can definitely help your team out a bunch, as for Harold, well............. :sleep
