October 4, 200421 yr Even though it is not technically the off-season i thought we could start one big thread on all the off-season trades, pick-ups, trade ideas, declined options, etc. I feel that this is the right place for it to go since alot more people will see it here than anywhere else. If there is anyway this can be pinned it would be appreciated. Anyways i will start it off with this. From rotoworld. Joe Randa - 3B - Royals Royals declined third baseman Joe Randa's $3.25 million option for 2005. Randa receives a $500,000 buyout. His performance this year was about in line with his career averages, so he should be able to get close to $3 million from some team in 2005. The Royals could try to re-sign him for $2 million or so. Oct. 3 - 8:09 pm et Juan Gonzalez - OF - Royals Royals declined outfielder Juan Gonzalez's $7 million option for 2005. Come on, Allard. Couldn't you have until Tuesday or Wednesday for this stuff? It's been a long day for us. Declining Gonzalez's option was the no-brainer of the Royals offseason. Some team will sign him to play regularly in 2005, but he's not going to make much money. He'd be a better investment as a DH than as a right fielder, and the team that gambles on him better make certain it has a solid backup ready to step in. Oct. 3 - 8:13 pm et
October 4, 200421 yr Juan Gonzalez is the equivilent of flushing your money down the toliet. However I would be willing to sign him to a minor league contract like Marvin Benard. He shouldn't get any more then the league mininum though. Joe Randa is definately a no.

I thought we could have a thread that had all trades, pick-ups, and declined options into one thread so that it would be easier for every one to see. I was not saying for us to pick either of these guys at all Maybe this thread can be used later in the year when the hot stove officially begins.

Vizquel and his agent met with GM Mark Shapiro for an hour on Monday to discuss whether the 37-year-old will be with Cleveland next year. October 5, 200421 yr I am not big on Vizquel. The guy is going to be 38 next year, so the question is, how many solid years does he have left? His defense has already began to slide, he hasn't hit above .275 in 3 of the last 4 years, and he hasn't stolen 20+ bases in 4 seasons. If you want to go after a middle infielder like Vizquel, than I would much rather go after Hairston from Baltimore. He is a similar player only a decade younger and probably cheaper.
October 5, 200421 yr Though i do think (or is it hope and pray....) that Borchard will figure it out and be a decent replacement for Maggs next year, if that doesn't work out i would like to see the Sox go for Jeff DaVannon from the Angels. In their outfield he's the odd man out but in stretches when he's played he's done quite well. got pretty good power and can steal some bases or two. i think he would be a well-known player by now if he was a starter. juddling :fthecubs

Personally, I would start Harris, Vizquel and Crede and have Uribe play 4-5 times per week amongst all three positions. I am not convinced that is the correct thing to do, just my gut feeling. I am not yet convinced Uribe would hold up well over a full season, especially playing SS. I am willing to be proven wrong on that one, however. I don't think the Sox are sold on Willie though, so my best guess is he is either gone or is kept as a 5th infielder/extra outfielder. That is just a gut feeling as well. You want him to be the replacement for maggs? Why?

Devanon actually appears to be a pretty good idea considering that he would come relatively cheap. 2003: .282 AVG, .360 OBP 2004: .277 AVG, .372 OBP Plus, he's an, uhh...grinder.

Yes, as long as OPS means OBP Actually, Davanon is exactly the type of guy we need. Solid, but not flashy production. He's Gload-like. He's a huge upgrade over Timo Perez should you ever have to rely on him for production, he'd likely step up and be a solid player.

If Paul Konerko is dealt to the Angels, Davanon and Scott Shields should be part of a package no doubt. They're pretty loaded with prospects as well.

Uribe's season leads me to agree with you Rex. He's seemed to get tired during the middle of the year. They need enough infield depth to keep him rested and fresh throughout the season if he's going to be a starter.
October 5, 200421 yr Author Won't davanon be filling in for guillen next year since it is likely he will be dealt? Also thought this pretty weird. This year against he has hit .136 against lefties. Last year he hit .342 against lefties last year.
October 5, 200421 yr Author If Paul Konerko is dealt to the Angels, Davanon and Scott Shields should be part of a package no doubt. They're pretty loaded with prospects as well. I find it hard to beleive they would deal shields for a player that only has one year on his contract. They are also not exactly loaded with good starters which he will be again next year.

While he is 29 and very earlier on in his major league career he seems to be damn good. Here are his career stats.. Innings pitched-309.2 Hits against-273 Home runs allowed-22 k/9- 7.38 17-11 in his career. .236 baa. Whip-1.22 Era-2.85.
