November 25, 200421 yr So the Yanks get Johnson over us, big deal. If we can somehow be the team that gets Javier Vazquez, with a little money thrown our way, and deal PK to AZ and possibly someone else, I would be happy. This guy has some talent, and would fit nicely in our rotation. Probably even better than Johnson when considering youth, potential, and years signed. per rotoworld: Javier Vazquez - S - NYY While speculation is that the Yankees would like to pull a Thanksgiving Day deal of their own this season, a Randy Johnson trade isn't likely to be completed this week. The rumors started heating up yesterday, with sources telling the Boston Herald a deal could be done as soon as today. However, there are still major roadblocks to be overcome. The biggest involves the frightening possibility for Arizona that Javier Vazquez would demand a trade next winter, as would be his right after being dealt while in the middle of a multiyear deal. The Yankees may have to get a third team involved if they want to use Vazquez to acquire Johnson. Since Yankees GM Brian Cashman is scheduled to spend the next five days at Disney World, it's unlikely that anything will get done soon. Nov. 25 - 3:08 am et
November 25, 200421 yr Texas has been mentioned as a strong possibility as the 3rd team, but I wouldn't count out the White Sox.
November 25, 200421 yr Texas has been mentioned as a strong possibility as the 3rd team, but I wouldn't count out the White Sox. Well, this is the time where Ozzie might be a factor. If Vasquez is traded he has the option of demanding a trade at the end of the 05' season, I can't see Texas wanting to make a deal and risk losing him, for sure the D-Backs won't take tht risk, the Sox have proven in the past they will take that risk.
November 25, 200421 yr I'd be all over this. I've long said dealing PK for Vazquez and cash would make sense. The Sox rotation would be taken care of and the Sox can then focus on a reliever and maybe even picking up Nomar or Delgado or whoever else to round out the offense.
November 25, 200421 yr I would love this deal as long as it doesn't involve giving up Garland unless we sign another FA SP first. If we open up another hole in the rotation they are going to smell the desperation. I'm not sure we can get someone to put up Garland's numbers for 3.4 Mil.
November 25, 200421 yr Vazquez scared me last year. I'm not quite as big on this deal as I would have been two years ago. Hopefully he'll rebound and find a way to succeed in the AL.
November 25, 200421 yr I think rather than Vazquez, I'd go after Brown. When healthy, he's a pretty dominant pitcher, probably even moreso than Vazquez. Also, if this team is out of it by the trading deadline, we'd definitely be able to get a nice package of players (you know how teams LOVE to trade for quality SP's at the ASB). Konerko for Brown straight up, with the Yankees eating all of Konerko's contract, and a little more than half of Brown's contract. It'd give you a pretty solid starting pitcher, as well as a little more payroll flexibility for which you can use to sign (at least one of) a MIF (Polanco), a RFer (Dye), and a reliever. Even last year, in such an injury riddled season, he was still able to put up a 4.09 ERA. Maybe it's just me, but I like this scenario a lot. He's off the payroll in '06, if we start off poorly, we can get a lot for him at the deadline. And, if he pitches well, then you have a solid 1-2-3 with Brown-Buehrle-Garcia. Thoughts?

Good thoughts... I have posted on this board before that I just have some kind of hunch that Brown will be on the roster in 2005. I dunno why, don't ask. Just a hunch.
November 25, 200421 yr I think he ends up in Atlanta or he remains in NY. He has a blanket no-trade clause, and has said he wants to pitch closer to his family if he is traded.

Showtime, I think the Ozzie factor may be getting stretched thin. Ozzie was supposed to be the factor in getting Vizquel also, but he went to the Giants instead. It all boils down to agents trying to get the most money for their clients. The Sox ain't got any money and probably won't give what they have to try and get people like Vizquel, etc. Ozzie isn't going to be the main factor in these FA signings or trades.

Brown = D Wells NO THANKS Take Vazquez, your getting a great young pitcher who can't handle the pressure of NYC..Bring him to the South side, with less pressure and decent run support for a number 3 he could win 18-20 games. Here a little thing to think of Trade Pauly for Vazuez Sign Sexson for 2 year deal to replace pauly. He is 3 years younger than Delgado.
November 27, 200421 yr Vazquez is an interesting case to look at. He's going to be making $34 million over the next 3 years I believe, there's no way we'll be paying him that much if we acquire so most likely the Yanks will probably have to eat some of his contract. There are arguments for and against acquiring Vazquez. FOR - Couldn't handle the pressure of New York - Look at Jeff Weaver in his 1st year in LA after he left the Yanks. - Has a great arsenal of 4 pitches AGAINST - Is an extreme flyball pitcher, had the 3rd most flyball outs of major league pitches. - His home ERA at the Cell would most likely inflate. - Had arm problems at the end of the 2004 season. All in all, it's a tough decision to decide whether or not to acquire Vazquez. Personally, I'd rather see if we could sign a FA like Odalis Perez or Jon Lieber first, so we could trade PK for some other needs that then we wouldn't have to fill.

I agree on Leiber, but it appears the Yankees are serious about re-signing him. Sox need a guy who pounds the strike zone, Leiber is one of those. Hopefully there is some flying under the radar going on but I doubt it.
November 27, 200421 yr I'm all for acquiring Jon Leiber, also. I really believe he's the guy that would produce more retun on the dollar.
November 27, 200421 yr I'm all for Vazquez, even though the Yanks will most likely want to give up Brown first. I think I read somewhere that the Yankees desperately want to get rid of Brown because of his contract. CWSOX45
