New Randy to Chicago talk

Then again, if you want a real shocker, try to imagine Randy Johnson pitching in a Chicago White Sox uniform next season.

The White Sox, who dealt power-hitting outfielder Carlos Lee to the Brewers for center fielder Scott Podsednik, reliever Luis Vizcaino and a player to be named, now are focusing their attention on Johnson.

Johnson's agents privately told the White Sox last week that he would accept a trade to the White Sox, sources close to the negotiations told Sports Weekly.

Now, all that's left is for the White Sox to actually pull off a deal with the Diamondbacks, and their stiffest competition is the mighty Yankees, who have already signed free-agent pitchers Carl Pavano and Jaret Wright.

The Diamondbacks, according to a high-ranking executive, are asking the White Sox for starter Jon Garland, a starting outfielder, minor league outfielder Ryan Sweeney, reliever Damaso Marte and perhaps another prospect.

The White Sox, after saving nearly $6 million in their deal with the Brewers, are cautiously optimistic they can pull off the impossible and bring in Johnson.

Johnson's preference is to be traded to the Yankees, but New York won't meet the Diamondbacks' asking price of starter Javier Vazquez, setup man Tom Gordon, at least three prospects, and $19.5 million. Yet, the Yankees still haven't given up their pursuit, according to sources, with owner George Steinbrenner personally involved in the negotiations.

The White Sox haven't won a World Series since 1917, but they could be considered a strong contender now that they have a genuine basestealing threat at the top of the lineup.

They also play in a much weaker division than the Yankees, where Johnson could dominate.

On a personal note, Johnson is next-door neighbors with White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf in Paradise Valley, Ariz.

The White Sox, abandoning the softball approach of trying to outslug everyone, are emphasizing pitching and defense.

Time will tell, but if the big guy makes his way to Chicago, the White Sox just might find themselves giving the Minnesota Twins all they can handle in the AL Central.

Dear lord, please don't give up that much for Randy Johnson! If KW did this, he would be basically giving up on the future of this organization for what would likely be an ill-fated run at the pennant. RJ doesn't make this current squad the instant favorite to win the AL. That's the only way you could justify a trade like this.

Let's say that the starting outfielder could be Everett. Garland, Everett, Marte, Sweeney, and a PTBNL. You could sign Wilson Alvarez to be the fifth starter and you would have a pitching staff like this:

Johnson

Garcia

Buerhle

Contreras

Alvarez

Takatsu

Vizcaino

Hermanson

Politte

Cotts

Adkins

The addition of Vizcaino allows you to trade Marte because he's dominant against lefties. Timo Perez would allow Everett to go. Alvarez replaces Garland. Sweeney might never even play in the majors. This deal brings one of the most dominant pitchers in the MLB and makes arguably the best 1-2-3 punch in the league. If KW gets this deal, he needs to pull the trigger!!!

A few things:

First, it confirms that RJ and Reinsdorf have a personal relationship that may be part of the reason the Sox have thought hed waive his no trade clause. I had heard that RJ's kids trick or treat at Reinsdorf's house in Az, so who knows.

Second, can Carl Everett count as a starting of? Because if he can, that solves so many of our problems. Gload can play 1b, Konerko DH, and the deal is not so bad, cause otherwise wed have to include Pods or Rowand, which just makes no sense.

And if they want Marte, the offer is:

Garland, Everett, Marte.

If they really pressed, add Diaz or Munoz.

I don't think Arizona is assuming that they would receive Dye or Podzilla since they have just recently been acquired. Rowand is untouchable, Everett would have to be the starting outfielder, and I do believe he qualifies as one. This deal would put us over the top.

Regardless of what the deal would be, if we have Johnson and still lose out to Minnesota, fold the team.

Won't happen. This team, with RJ will dominate the central, I don't care what kind of offenses the Tigers and the Indians and the Twins have, good pitching always beats good hitting, (see 2004 world series). Try and find a 1-2-3 that's better than RJ, Garcia, Buerhle.
