this story broke this morning from what I hear. robbie alomar has been signed to a one year contract to play 2b for the cards. Where does that leave us in 2b hunts???

Better off. We passed on Alomar, now the Cards are out of the bidding on the remaining talent.

He's only getting $500,000. so there's a chance that they may sign someone else to compete with him for a job

At least until July. :P

lol true dat

Alomar justs wants to hang around long enough to get 3,000 hits because that will cement his spot in the Hall even though his numbers right now are hall worthy.

Yeah I believe that. There is no question that he was a great 2nd basemen back in his day. I remember him playing for the Indians and watching a couple of games. Loften would lead off, Visquel bat second, and Alomar third. Good averages and good speed for all of them. It's kind of funny how 2 of our arch rivals played with the Sox and the other was rumored to come here.

Are you serious? Alomar's numbers aren't HOF worthy? I suggest you look at those numbers again. He is HOF worthy. He is still batting 300 even after 2-4 off years. 371 obp, 443 slg for a secondman. Very good numbers that are HOF. Add to that the Gold Gloves, two World Series and you got a HOF. It will take awhile since the spitting incident will hurt him. Even though the umpire has to take some of the blame for putting gas on that fire.

He never said he isn't hall worthy. He actually said even right now without 3,000 hits he is hall worthy.

Oh man, my bad. I did misread his post. Sorry.

Hell this brings up another point. If Robbie is trying for 3,000 at the expense of his 300 average, could that hurt his HOF chances? He hasn't hit 260 the past 3-4 years. His career is fading so quickly.

I think that's what hurt Jim Rice's chances for the HOF. He was a great player, maybe the best, from the mid 70's to early 80's but he faded fast and I think people remember that more than his great years.

I think the remarkable thing about Alomar is that even in the very modern era of middle infielders with huge numbers, his will still hold up. Contrast him with Trammel and Whitaker. Roberto is a first-ballot guy in my opinion, and a HOF'er in the least. I can't see him playing his way out of the hof

I have always been a big Robbie fan. A little less when he was in Cleveland. At 500k I think we could have given this guy another shot.

Roberto has been prone to injuries and also doesn't have the same bat speed as before. It is better that we passed on him and besides I don't think he wanted to be second fiddle at second base. He would have been as I think Willie will start. But, who knows we might get someone else now for the infield.

According to The Cardinals official site, Alomar has not been signed.

Don't know if this has been posted elsewhere or not.

I believe they have onyy come to terms on a deal. He still has to take the physical before it is official.

I expected the Cards to do alot better then this...

I can only think that he is just a backup. Then again they did bring Tony Womacks career out of the toliet...
