Luis Castillo for 2B?

Featured Replies

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 16, 2005 -> 02:01 PM)
What are you talking about?

Castillo is signed through 2006 and has an option at 5.25 million for 2007.

Why in the world do some want to see or wouldn't mind seeing Damaso being traded?

I'm not unappreciative of what Marte can mean to this team, but .... I believe a guy like Castillo can mean so much more in the long run. Our bullpen is now a strength, and we can fill the 2nd base and 2nd slot in the order with a very quality player in Castillo. That's why, in the right deal, I wouldn't mind if we traded Marte.

Our BP is a questionable strength. They are NL transplants after all. Those are always hit or miss. I didn't know Castillo was signed through 2006.

I saw the 4.5M for 2005 & his yrs & figured he wasn't. How much is he due to earn in 2006?

some players who may be at the highest level of worth, should or could be traded. this is by all mean not a slam against anyone personnally, but this is baseball esp now-a-days.

marte if handle properly should bring in good prospects esp if he is not part of the long term picture.

as an example when hsc was here, she and i and a hand full of others said that we should trade mags some 2 yrs ago. esp when we heard that he was not thinking of coming back here. we got into a lot of heated arguments on that. hind sight now.

but the point is the sox wait till the last minute to resign or trade a player. be aggressive is what i am saying. that is why if a trade is being talked about, let explore the idea of loosing players like crede, marte or others, if the trade is a good one.

Sure our bullpen is of questionable strength. All bullpens are. Our's happen to look to be an area of strength, and for a guy like Castillo, I think it's worth the gamble.

No. I don't want to trade Marte for "prospects". If it takes Marte to get a Castillo, cool. But to weaken our bullpen for the chance of strengthening our 2008 team ... no thank you.

if marte can bring in player or prospects is fine with me.

Marte for Catiloo straight up? No thanks. I honestly think a LH specialist who is good vs rigties and is one of the bets set-up men in the AL for an average on-and-off speedster with decent-tp-good defense is not a good deal. Marte for Castillo/Prospects is better but I'd still be hesistant. I'd rather sign Iguchi.

I'd rather sign Iguchi too. But Marte for Castillo, I'd do yesterday.

Again it all depends on the $. Is it safe to say Castillo will cost 10M/2yr?

Marte's contract is very good: $1.25M in ‘05, $2.25M in ‘06.

Team options for ‘07 and ‘08 ($3.0M vs. $250K buyout each).

That's a very good price to lock up one of the better LH setup men in the AL. I still say no. Good LH setup men are hard to find & even harder to sign long term. If you can make this trade w/out Marte I'm more open to it.

$5.33 in 2006.

I don't "want" to see Marte traded if at all possible. I was just thinking what player could the fish want that would fit in while saving them some money in salary. But in order to get a player of Castillo's talent, it'll take a lot of talent to get him. IMO, a guy like CAstillo who's a lock to hit .300 and can hit leadoff or #2, and play gold glove defense up the middle, is worth the cost of talent like Marte +.

I wouldn't say he's a lock to hit .300. He didnt last year.

I don't think nobody here is underappreciate what Marte has done and meant for the Sox; however, in order to get a player the caliber of Luis Castillo, I am in agreement with Beck72. Nevertheless, I don't think the Fish is willing to trade Castillo straight up for Marte. It has to be Harris & Marte for Castillo, and if this is the case, I will do it in a heartbeat.

Acquiring Castillo will solidify our infield. Cotts or Vizcaino can certainly take over Marte's role. Look at the lineup and tell me how terrific it is:

1) Podsednik CF

2) Castillo 2B

3) Thomas/Everett DH

4) Konerko 1B

5) Rowand LF

6) Dye RF

7) Uribe SS

8) Pierzynski C

9) Crede

I could die to have this hitting lineup!

I'd like to have the Yankees' starting rotation too, but you have to work with what you're given.

that's a lineup vs RHP

VS LHP:

Castillo

Uribe

Thomas

PK

Dye

Rowand

Crede

AJ

Pods

If the sox had the opportunity, they'd be fools not to take the Fish up on Castillo. That kind of everyday lineup, both offensively and defensively, would make the Sox one of the best in the AL.

the deal won't happen, but yes it would make us good in offense and defense

Why wouldn't this deal happen. The marlins are in desperate need of a setup man with Mota moving to the closers role. They're also looking to clear salary in order to catch a big bopper. Lastly, Willie Harris still has loads of potential and could learn a thing or two from Pierre. I think this is a good trade for both teams, and if KW gets the chance to pull in Castillo, he needs to do so.

At least intially, Pods will most likely leadoff regardless who's pitching.

I don't think we should underestimate what a dominant bullpen can do for us. Willie can still be a special player IMHO.

PITCHING PITCHING PITCHING. Our bullpen is a strength right now. Vizcaino had a 3.75 ERA last year, he could have well over 4 in the AL. How can he or Cotts easily replace Marte and his 2.5 ERA (except for last year). Marte IS our bullpen, and our bullpen sucks without Marte. I'd take Castillo to, but I'm not weakening my bullpen for someone with equal defensive talents to Willie Harris.

we forget that the fish LOVE young talent, and like to develop that talent, im sure that they would be interested in some of our young talent on this issue, that is well under priced. Would you be willing to get rid of maybe two prospects or a prospect and a long reliever for castillo?????

A few things:

*Shingo is the Sox bullpen. Every other guy there should be interchangeable, and even if their arms fall off, used to hand Shingo a lead in the 9th. [look at how the Yanks used Gordon, he threw 90 innings last yr]

*the bullpen would still be strong w/o Marte.[vizcaino + hermanson >> than Mike Jackson and Marte, not to mention improvement from Cotts and Adkins in 2005] *even if a LHP is needed for the pen, one can be traded for during the season at a much lesser price than a gold glove, switch hitting, .300 hitting 2Bman.

*Castillo won his 2nd gold glove last yr. Not too bad in my book

Yes. With Castillo locked up for a few yrs at a reasonable price, he'd be worth losing some good prospects/ young players for
