Personally, that he goes peacfully, without pain. I pray for God to guide the next Pope as well as he did this one. Not offensive. Good question, actually.

If there is one guy who doesn't need me to pray for him, I got a feeling it's probably the pope. They also give off the impression that people are praying for his health, as in that he recovers. If you are a true believer, you know that when your time comes, God is calling you.

He's going through everything my grandfather did before his death. At least the Pope doesn't have to suffer through gangreene (sp?).

If anyone cares officially the "last rites" are made up of two parts, and I'm certain our resident expert FlaSoxJim will correct me if I'm wrong here. The Catholic Church tries to avoid the term last rites, because it can be confusing.

 

The first part is the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick followed by the Sacrament of Penance. Both Sacraments can be given at any time, but special significance has been given to that these as the person is dying.

Well, as the resident Recovering Catholic (took a wrong turn one day on my way to Seminary) I can chime in, but first things first. JPII is a first-rate human being that most of the world should respect regardless of affiliation with the Church of Rome. Of course I don't agree with everything he has said during his papacy, but if I did I would be a Practicing rather than Recovering Catholic. Still, I have an enormous amount of respect for him and agree his shoes (robes, tonture, etc...) will be hard to fill.

 

As to Last Rights, I think Tex has part of it right and part of it a little off (real Catechism Catholics please step in if I get it wrong).

 

Yes, because "Last Rights" sounds so final, I think the preferred term is the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. It is a sacrament that can be received multiple times - during relapsed illnesses, if the person takes a turn for the worse, prior to surgery, etc. Another out of date, downer term for the rite is "Extreme Unction" which is what my grandparents always called it.

 

As far as the order of operations in teh sacrament, Tex, usually at the end of life there are three distinct sacraments bestoewed. In orderm they are Confession, then teh Annointing of the Sick (the actual ceremony consiste of laying of hands on the sick individual, and annointing with oil), and finally Eucharist. My HS theology teacher - a Lating geek after my own heart - referred to this last Eucharist as "viaticum" wihich refers specifically refers to a journey that is the 'passing over' to eternal life through Christ (via = road or way, as in "I am the Way, the Truth and the Light...").

 

My same theology teacher suggested that this sacrament might be the most non-Biblical and Catholo-centric, as nearlly all of the rules governing it come from the Cathoic Church Catechism, Summa Theologica, etc., rather than from direct Biblical sources. Mark alludes to the sacrament (according to Catholic interpretation) in relating Jesus instructions to go and teach all nations, anointing them with oil... etc. But, the more substantive Biblical source for the sacrament is from James, IIRC.

 

There. Now, THAT is way more than anybody wanted to know.

I'm not sure. It could well have been Cardinal Bernadine if he had lived. That was probably the best shot at an American Pope.

There's talk of a South American or African pope. Most likely the newest pope will be chosen from one of the regions where Catholicism is still burgeoning and growing. And, most likely, one who is a bit more moderate than JPII was as well in some respects.

 

As the pendulum swung wildly one way with Vatican II, it swung back with JPII. Most likely the college of Cardinals will try to select someone back in the middle.

He was pretty cool, wasn't he? I know back when he was alive that was the common belief that he should be the next in line. Then in death he further proved what an amazing person he was.

Well, yeah, of course. Nobody can hold a candle to St. Peter. Thought that was implied. I didn't even think that he was technically considered a "pope," since he was the original.

 

That said, I have no doubt hat John Paul II will be canonized at some point.
