Good points, Jason and Jim.

Jim, I'd rather they go the college route if they go with a pitcher, and if they go with a position player -- it doesn't matter to me.

Like you said, drafting up the middle (or like you said, SS) is a really smart idea, because many times those guys can be moved around. Plus, we could use a real impact prospect at one of the MIF positions. We have Hernandez behind the plate, Fields at a corner, and we all know the plethora of outfielders we have. Our pitching is actually taking steps too, I know Cerb (for one) really likes Liotta, along with the other guys like Gio, Brandon, Baj, etc etc.

But I won't mind if they take another OF'er. I just don't think money should be a reason for not taking a player, as this year, we won't need to spread out money to our second round/supps. Our farm system has slowly improved over the past couple of years, and I just want them to be able to grab (who they see) as the best overall player, regardless of money demands.

but as far as SS goes, I'd look at Long Beach State's shortstop.  My buddies have said he's pretty damn good (I've never watched him that much) but he's supposed to be a lot like bobby Crosby and would be easier to sign.

His name is Troy Tulowitzki and he'd be a great pick following the Josh Fields selection last year.

Jason, Jim, Dan, Keith:

Hi, my name is Mike and I feel outside the loop with all these first names being bandied about. Good discussion though...

How did you guess my first name Mike? :D :bang

I believe Gio and Tyler were supplemental's...

Yep.

That's correct, and Whistler was a second rounder.

Also, I'd like a shortstop this year with the first pick, unless by some miracle Jeff Clement fell all the way to 15.

You guys are using Borchard as a reason JR wont take a risk, I use it as a reason that he will take a risk on a guy like Drew or Weaver. Now Borchard hasnt worked out like we all planned, but he has worked his ass off and has spent time taking part of sox events like that fundamentals thing......If a guy works his ass off as much as Borchard does thats all you can ask for, and maybe he is thinking that giving these guys the money will give them the incentive to work as hard as Borchard has, but hopefully turn out ok.

Also isnt the reason Ryan Sweeney fell to us in the 2nd round was because of signing problems?

Going off of memory, I believe teams were worried about Ryan's commitment to Tony Gwynn and the SDSU program. So yes I believe you are correct.

What Ryan are you all talking about?

Sweeney, why he was drafted in the 2nd round when everyone thought he was a first round talent.

To me I'd prefer the college player over the high schooler just because it's a more sure thing, but if the best player on the board is a high schooler you take him, just look at Gio.

Also when you look at Josh Fields and how he's progressed that's definitely a plus. Tyler Lumsden was picked at #30 IIRC, and the Sox thought he was the best college lefty on the board at the time. We haven't really been able to see much of that because of his arm problems, but it's definitely something I'm really going to keep an eye on when he comes back, how he does and how fast he makes it up thru the system.

Yeah I was speaking about Ryan Sweeney.

He had electric stuff when I saw him last year.
