Rules

1. A poster picks for the team he/she has selected or has been selected for him/her.

2. Pick the player you think the team will pick. If you have no idea who the team will pick, just go on who you think is the best player available. Remember: teams pick mostly on best player available and not on need in the 1st round. However, some teams have a history of picking more towards high school or college players.

3. Signups are still available. Post in the signups thread to take a team if you haven't done so or if you want to take another team. Posters are allowed as many teams as they want as we still have numerous openings.

4. I will PM everyone as their pick is next if they forget.

5. Any other questions, simply ask in the signups thread.

 

If you want to look up some info on past drafts to get a team's draft history or look up some info on some draft prospects try Baseball America or MLB.com's Draft Coverage. For info on what certain teams will be looking at go to John Sickels' blog site. They are having a 5 round mock draft as posted in the 'Community Mock Draft' thread. If you scroll down or go to the next page you will find a topic called MOD: team and that will have info on who those teams will be looking to draft.

Punch and Judy Garland is on the clock with the Diamondbacks. (There isn't actually a clock, but it's cool to say that. )

The Arizona Dimondbacks pick is in. It may not be sexy but we have selected Justin Upton, HS Shortstop.

With the second pick, the Royals pick Cameron Maybin. They debated over whether to pick him or Alex Gordon, but with Billy Butler, their top prospect waiting and Mark Teahan there at 3b as well, they go with the 5-tool package in Maybin.

Surprise Surprise.

I'm on the Board for the Rox and I'll have a pick for ya'll soon.

This is a tough call. The Rox used to pick pitchers every single year but the last two years have drafted quality athletes in Ian Stewart and Chris Nelson. Thus, I'm tempted and I think they'll be tempted to take Andrew McCutchen.

 

But, its probably more likely they go back to taking pitchers this year especially when there are a couple quality college pitchers available. Luke Hochevar has pitched in Colorado with success and the Rox aren't afraid of Boras clients. So, I'm going with Hochevar the 6-5 righty from Tennessee here.

With the 8th Pick of the Draft, The Tampa Bay Devil Rays select....

 

Craig Hansen, RHP, St John's University

With Hanson and Pelfrey off the board, the Mets are scrambling a bit. They have a recent interest in 5-tool players at the High School level which means Bruce will be in the mix. They also could use pitching but there is not a lot of Townsend buzz with them. They could look at Zimmerman but I think with David Wright they will be slightly discouraged from doing so. Instead, I am going out on a limb saying with the departure of Jason Phillips and the rapid decline of Mike Piazza that the Mets will select SC Catcher Jeff Clement at nine overall.

Anyways, Pittsburg is going to go with another high school kid, taking the five-tool player in Andrew McCutchen. No, not Timo "Mr." McClutch, but Andrew McCutchen.

With the 12th pick in the draft the Reds selec Chris Volstad. We were going to take Mark Pawelek, but hes a Boras client.

With the 13th Pick in the draft the Orioles are gonna go with OF Jay Bruce. We can't pass him up...plus he sounds signable now that Boras is no longer involved. Its kinda a priority to sign their first round pick after the Wade Townsend debacle

Let's say Zimmerman somehow falls to the Sox in the real draft. Do we take him? I think we'd have to seriously consider it. He'd probably rate as the best player still on the board.

I'd have to guess the answer is yes. Just from reading about him, it looks like he handles himself very well at the plate, is hard to strike out, has good gap power. Plus, it seems like he's a stud at third base defensively.

 

EDIT: And a quick note -- his high school team? David Wright at third base, BJ Upton at shortstop, with Zimmerman at secondbase (I assume). :droolsmiley.

The Marlins select RHP Matt Torra out of UMass. They feel they may have been able to grab him at 19, but they didn't want to take a chance and miss out on the talented starter who they feel will be an easy sign.

With the 17th pick in the draft, the New York Yankees select high school SS, CJ Henry, out of Oklahoma City, OK. The Yankees had been targeting Matt Torra out of UMass, but the Marlins pulled the carpet out from under them on that one. Henry reminds the Yankees of current Yank Gary Sheffield, adding more fuel to the fire of them moving him from SS to the OF.
