Umpires

Featured Replies

Is it just me or are the Umps calling strikes based on where or how the catchers catch the ball. That's not how it is supposed to be done. I'm an Ump and the first thing we were taught was to call the pitch on where it crossed the plate. Case in point was Wednesday's game: When Shingo was pitching in the Ninth the 2 pitches before the HR to Closser were clearly strikes yet since Widger caught it outside of the plate they were called balls. Also this happened in the Red Sawx-Flubs game yesterday. You call the pitches on where it crosses the plate.

Thank you Magellan. Why start a thread about this and furthermore, why start it in PHF?

I, too, am an IHSA umpire and this is common knowledge. I believe the term you are looking for is "framing." You are taught not to fall victim to "framing," and I guarntee you the umpires at the professional level wouldn't be were they are today if they consistantly fell victim to this "art."

There is nothing wrong with it and it does work from time to time, but c'mon. No thread.

LoL white sox josh, this one's good.

U guys should throw this one in "important topics".

I, as well, am an IHSA Umpire. I call a wide strike zone to get the game moving. However, this is different in the major leagues.

This is their job. Their profession of choice. And they are the best of the best of what they do. Umpiring School has rigorous training.

Nevertheless, as I teach my Umpires (I'm an Umpire Supervisor) that only the umpire has the final say in his calls. The fans mean nothing. Thus is the case here.

I think, overall that the umpires have been good this year. You get some calls, and you don't get some calls. Its how it has always been.

if anyone just saw the mets game... which i doubt... the ump wuz disgustingly lopsided to the Angels.

he threw out mike piazza in the first inning for practically no reason and then called a strike 3 that bounced in the dirt, along with calling a foul ball fair, thus doubling up cairo and ending the inning. he was just horrible and should be fined or something. horrible. ok just venting - i kinda like the mets for some stupid reason...

(and yes i agree this thread should be in ATH)

Did anyone else think the ball 4 on the bases loaded walk was probably a strike?

I thought he was gonna call it a strike but in all reality it was at his ankles. Crede would have swung at it no problem.

Honestly I was shocked the Uribe didn't. I definately thought it was close enough to swing at, at very least.

That was only close to a strike because the current strike zone in the mlb is ridiulously low. Raise the damn strike zone.

What do you want to hear? The strike zone is currently bulls***. Why are pitches called strikes at the ankles and then pitches at the belt go either way? Baseball was better off when the strike zone went from the letters to the knees, not the belt to the ankles. You are an ump and will probally back up how the umps call the game. But it is ridiculous in my opinion and many others.
