July 17, 200520 yr Rumors and Rumblings The destination of Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Mark Redman before the July 31 non-waiver deadline could depend on if the Florida Marlins trade right-hander A.J. Burnett to the Baltimore Orioles. If the Marlins deal Burnett, then they will likely try to acquire either Redman or Pirates right-hander Josh Fogg to fill the hole in their rotation. If the Orioles fail to land Burnett, they are likely to make a play for Redman. The Pirates hope the Chicago White Sox are interested enough in Redman to trade one of their three outfielders at Class AA Birmingham _ Jerry Owens, Ryan Sweeney and Chris Young.
July 17, 200520 yr QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 01:55 PM) Haha Young/Sweeney for Redman...HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Not for Redman I would give up any of our 3 Barons outfielder . Fool KW once, you wont fool him again.
July 17, 200520 yr I dont know that much about Redman so I cant give my personal scouting report on the guy. 121.1 IP, 4 W, 64 K's, 4.01 ERA, 1.24 WHIP. Last month he got shelled with an 8.04 ERA and no wins. I'd rather wait for Hernandez and use him and I certainly would not give our top prospect(s) for him. July 17, 200520 yr Redman is mediocre. Nto the type of guy we want. He couldn't even start for us in the postseason so his value would be if you thought he could pitch out of the pen for you, but not for his dollars.
July 17, 200520 yr I'd rather have Lilly than Redman...unless they get Redman and swing him in a bigger deal for Schimdt or AJB.. Edited July 17, 200520 yr by EvilJester99
July 17, 200520 yr Just an average pitcher who will make ~$5 mil next season isn't the most attractive of options. I'd rather be paying that amount to him than El Duque though.
July 17, 200520 yr QUOTE(3E8 @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 08:55 PM) Just an average pitcher who will make ~$5 mil next season isn't the most attractive of options. I'd rather be paying that amount to him than El Duque though. Ick -- I didn't know he was signed through next season. Maybe I'll keep Jerry Owens, then... EDIT: I should say, though, that he'd be the type of guy I'd want as a long reliever. He's been an average pitcher throughout his career, which is something we could use in place of Vizcaino/Shingo. I'd take him, though, for Viz and a decent prospect (but nothing too good). Oh, and Pitt would have to eat about half of next year's salary. It's hard to find league average pitcher's for $2.5 million bucks, so it'd be a decent pickup -- IMO, of course. Edited July 17, 200520 yr by CWSGuy406
July 17, 200520 yr QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 03:58 PM) Ick -- I didn't know he was signed through next season. Well it's actually a 4.95 team or 4.5 player '06 option. Probably he will exersice that, I don't see anyone giving him more in FA but who knows. Edited July 17, 200520 yr by 3E8
July 17, 200520 yr QUOTE(3E8 @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 09:14 PM) Well it's actually a 4.95 team or 4.5 player '06 option. Probably he will exersice that, I don't see anyone giving him more in FA but who knows. He's already said he'll turn down those options. The team option requires his consent too. He has a player option of $4.5 million for 2006 that he can exercise to guarantee that salary. The Pirates have a club option of $4.95 million, but Redman must agree to it or he can declare himself a free agent. From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, here. Imo he'll get more than that, and he'll certainly get that plus more years.

July 17, 200520 yr QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 09:30 PM) Perhaps it's about wanting/getting more on the open market. or... perhaps... He'll be getting the heck out of Pittsburgh. He's made a big deal about wanting to stay in Pittsburgh, and he's said to everyone who'll listen that he'd like to sign a long-term deal w/ the Pirates. (Look at the article -- he's kissing everyone's ass.) It could be a huge ploy, I don't know. But I'd be shocked if he doesn't get a $5 mil (avg) offer for more than 1 year. He's nothing spectacular, but after last offseason, the value of a dependable, perfectly average 200 innings looks to be at least that. Consider that El Duque got $4 mil per, and he's a HUGE durability risk.
July 17, 200520 yr I wouldn't be against trading Jerry Owens for Redman, then sending Redman to the Marlins as part of a package for Burnett. The original rumor says the Marlins would try to acquire Redman if they traded Burnett, so why not help them? We got Owens for basically nothing. Turning that into a major chip in the Burnett deal would be huge. Or KW could emply Redman as a cheaper 5th starter than Contreras and send the Count to Florida per the current swell of rumors.
July 18, 200520 yr QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 07:23 PM) I would trade Honel for him, no more than that though. They could have had Honel for nothing a couple of months ago. They're not going to give up something for him after an additional month of suckitude in AA.
