GAME THREAD 7-19-05 SOX vs Tigers

Featured Replies

It would be interesting if we meet up with the Red Sox in the playoffs (if we make it). I don't like our chances against the sliders of Clement and Arroyo. When we face these types of pitchers, we need to have at least 4 lefties in our lineup. If that requires KW to acquire a lefty hitter, then that's something he needs to do.

Great work tonight Bobby!

Contreras. Blows. Ass. Schmidt. Doesn't.

At least Schmidt has some confidence. At least Schmidt knows how to locate his pitches. At least Schmidt uses more than 2 pitches. At least Schmidt knows how to pitch in the post-season. At least Schmidt can calm himself down when getting in a jam. At least Schmidt can pitch out of a jam. At least Schmidt isn't a pussy headcase who loses ALL confidence when pitching out of the stretch. At least Schmidt is a smart pitcher.

Yah, Schmidt knows how to locate his pitches to the tune of a 4.80 ERA in a PITCHERS league in a PITCHERS park.

I can't believe what I'm reading tonight. its amazing.

Twins tied the score at 2 in the 6th.

Well then you are thinking about what you've heard in the media and in past years rather than what is going on in real likfe this year.

Jose has crushed Schmidt this year performance wise.

Lemme see, uuuum no. Contreras pitches on a good team that bails out their pitchers. Schmidt plays on a s***ty team littered with injuries and that doesn't back up their pitcher.

He's also been recovering from an injury, and has been improving over the last month or so. All I know is I watch more baseball than probably anyone, and I'd take Schmidt over Contreras in a heartbeat. Don't forget that if you get Schmidt, you get a pitcher who hasn't been seen by the AL teams at all.

Give it up and stop looking at stats for this year that are completely different from career stats (for both pitchers, might I add).

Schmidt >>> Contreras

End of story.

What has lead you to believe that Contreras is a good pitcher?

Crede with consecutive 2 hit nights? :o

So if Schmidt didn't pitch for the Giants he'd have more wins? Look at his away splits and his .BAA.

Burnett's Road ERA in a pitcher's league = 3.80

Contreras' Road ERA in a hitter's league = 3.50

Burnett pitches in a pitcher's park.

Jose pitches in a hitter's park.

You have to look at more than that. Contreras has the benefit of facing weak-ass AL Central hitting. And while Washington is pretty weak offensively, the Braves and Phillies have scored more runs than any team in the AL Central.

1, 1, 1, 2, 0.

He has pretty much had to dominate to get W's this year.

Thats what I thought it seems like when he gives up three runs it means an automatic loss. I hate when he gives up an early three or four runs because it usually means game over.

Like they say...good pitching beats good hitting. So with that said I'd rather see KW get a bonefied lefty specialist in the bullpen so they could shut down the lefties on the SOX like Damon and Ortiz who can really impact the game.

Schmidt's struggles earlier in the year don't mean much if he has got his act together now. Over the last few years he has been a star. Contreras has always had trouble putting 2 decent games together. If Sabean realized that his team isn't going anywhere, the Sox would be smart to take a chance on adding such a dominant force.

THE MAN GETS 3.1 RUNS A GAME.

Are you kidding me? Bails him out. He's had to win 2-1, 2-1, 1-0, 5-3, and 7-2 this year to get a freaking win.

Unbelievable.

Compare him to his performances last season. He has more favorable splits than Jason Schmidt, not saying he's a great pitcher but to say he's not a good starter when we've had to put up with the likes of Dan Wright and Jason Grilli starting for us over the past few seasons should prove something.

Why scoreboard watch the Twins any more? I'm watching the A's more hoping they do not make the wildcard.

Funny if we trade for Schmidt and he gets no run support, hate to say I told you so, but hey whatever works.

It's like you don't know how to read. It's amazing.

Coming into tonight Contreras ranked 20th in the league in ERA. Ahead of Randy Johnson, Jeremy Bonderman, and many others. If you figure there are 75 pitchers in the league, he would be in the 2nd starter percentile. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Jason Schmidt or Jose Contreras, who do you pick?

No explanations, no money issues, just who would you rather have pitching on the Sox?

If Schmidt had the same run support Contreras gets this year he'd be lucky to have a couple wins the way he's pitched.

Right this second? With everything we know about them?

Jose Contreras in a heartbeat. His numbers are better in every way.

The simple fact of the matter is that Schmidt >>>>> Contreras. Period. There is no argument. Schmidt has postseason experience. Successful at that. Schmidt knows how to pitch. He has confidence. Contreras is highly overrated. Arguing that Contreras is better than Schmidt is like arguing that Glendon Rusch is better than Freddy Garcia.
