Imagine if the White Sox had a legitimate No. 3 hitter. They ranked next-to-last--ahead of only the A's--in the A.L. in OPS from that spot in the lineup. DH Carl Everett, their most frequent No. 3 hitter this season, had a .296 on-base percentage in September. "He's a mess, an easy out," one scout says. "He's swinging at everything. He has no plan." . . .

The White Sox's middle-of-the-order issues make it even more imperative they re-sign their cleanup man, 1B Paul Konerko, a potential free agent who has produced back-to-back 40-homer seasons and a career-high .909 OPS. The Dodgers, Angels, Red Sox, Mets and Orioles are among the teams that could make runs at Konerko. . . .

can't agree with him more on the resigning konerko thing. He's our oly consistent offensive threat and unless you're magically going to replace that production, you have to pay him.

Also, everett should have been out of the 3 hole a long time ago.

If dye isn't in there on tuesday, i'm going to be pissed.

you know he won't be. Our only hope is that Carl finds a "plan" and stops "swinging at everything."

You know he'd love to stick it to the carmines.

I think we have to re-sign him this offseason no matter what we do in the playoffs. He had exactly 1/5 of our home run, he's a leader in the clubhouse, and he has great chemestry with this team.

Everett has owned Boston in the past.

This series would be the only one that I would use him 3rd/5th.

Dye would need to bat 6th because he struggles vs. the Sawks.

Jermaine will hit 3rd.

I dunno, I think Dye will be in the 3-hole come Tuesday. It seems relatively apparent that that's Ozzie's line of thought. He was in there for the two dress rehearsals, and he performed admirably against a good pitching staff.

Carl's been hitting a lot better in the very recent past (I was sitting just above his first triple at Comerica Park) so I wouldn't mind him in the 5 spot. Make them think twice about putting Pecan on!

As for Paulie, you can't let him leave the south side if you're Kenny Williams. He's more than a bargain at almost any price, considering what he gives your club in numbers AND in PR. He's never been a problem on any level, which is more than you can say for a number of other superstars. Plus, without him, we don't have a lot of All-Stars. Just pay the man!

Yeah Dye's definitely going to be in the #3 spot come today;

"The way Dye's swinging the bat lately, he's swinging it pretty good," Guillen said. "He's had real good at-bats and that's the reason we did it. Right now, Carl is swinging better, but it's not better than Dye. I don't want to keep switching people to third from one day to another. That's why I'm going to stay with him as long as I can."

Where would he play?

If you asked me a couple months ago if I wanted Konerko back in '06, I would have told you that our money would be better spent elsewhere.

But as it becomes increasingly clear that he is one of the few productive bats in our lineup, and being that 40 HR, 100 RBI guys aren't exactly falling out of the sky, I think the Sox should do whatever they can to bring him back.

Unless KW plans on bringing at least a couple productive bats next year, its hard to see our lineup scoring many runs without Pauly.

We need Paul Konerko back with the Sox in 2006 and beyond. I also hope we keep the Big Hurt as our DH and hitting number three. We had a problem with the #3 spot this year because we didn't have Frank back and healthy. When he was there he was dynamite and so was the team.

However, Everett is on the roster and hitting 5th and I think that a player of Carl's caliber and talent will be delivering against the Red Sox. I am counting on it.

Kong can win a game with his bat or with his glove. That can't be said of all 1B in the league. You definitely have to resign him. We have enough speed on this team to overcome his slow feet.

We need AJ, Widger, & Kong back for sure. I'd likewise like to hope Harris, Ozuna, Anderson, & Gload can produce enough in ST to fill out the bench. A consistent bench would make us that much stronger.

I like Gload+Thomas better than Everett for the DH spot & 3-Hole.

i love paulie but if he's looking at 10 mil a year i'd have to decline
